Saturday from 9 to 5 meet artist Mark Alan Anderson. He has lived in the Kansas City area for most of his life, drawing and writing about how and where we choose to live. He relies on simple tools – a fountain pen, a brush, a paint kit that fits into the palm of his hand – to create quick, energetic sketches that tell a story. He’s one of the administrators of Urban Sketchers and his work may be found at justsketches.workpress.com.

The water garden at the Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary is an excellent educational resource. Children, ranging from preschool to middle school, can investigate the many plants and animals that thrive in the water garden. Aquatic plants include American lotus, pickerel weed, waterlilies, and yellow flag. The pond is also home to several animal species such as bullfrogs, cricket frogs, leopard frogs, crayfish, dragonflies, and even a painted turtle! Surrounding the garden is a variety of native plants to attract butterflies and other pollinators. The garden is located just behind the nature center at the Martha Lafite Thompson Nature Sanctuary. The Paseo West Community Garden is a community outreach project of Hope Faith Ministries and was designed and built to bring beauty and nutritious food to an area that is blighted. It is on a large city lot with a lovely stone wall and is surrounded by a beautiful black ornamental fence. Walk up the front stairs and onto the paved walkway which lead you to a bubbling natural stone water feature where you can sit for a moment and enjoy the garden. Birds often play in the trickling water. Wander through the 24 raised beds to see a variety of fruits and vegetables grown by community neighbors. Enjoy sitting under the pergola where honeysuckle and ornamental gourds will soon cover the lattice. The Paseo West Community Garden is the first "pay-as-you-can" garden in the nation. When harvest begins, anyone can come for a bag of fresh produce for a suggested $5 donation. Those who cannot afford to pay will have the opportunity to help in the garden to earn their produce. The garden also hosts community cook outs and gardening activities for children. A teaching kitchen and classroom will soon be added next to the garden to teach healthy eating and lifestyle concepts.

2017 included a new pond in the front yard. We had a brand-new pond for 2016. After 10 years the retaining wall supporting our pond was crumbling away and the pond was going with it. So in February 2016, we tore the original pond down and constructed a new one. The result is a very unique above ground pond containing approximately 5000 gallons of water; this is 2000 gallons bigger than before. This pond is home to 75 to 100 goldfish and Koi and 2 grumpy catfish. This pond is completely built and maintained by the owners. We can answer any question you may have about it.
