ABSTRACT This study set out to take a definitive look at African Caribbean entrepreneurship by delineating the broad spectrum of historical and contemporary theories of ethnic entrepreneurship. It also looked in particular on the phenomenon of African Caribbean entrepreneurship through the lens of Pentecostalism, which is the most popular religious expression of African Caribbean peoples in the UK. The extent to which the socio‐cultural and psycho‐ religious underpinnings of the African Caribbean person are amenable to entrepreneurial engagement was also subjected to analysis. This analysis focused on themes and perspectives, which are general to African Caribbean experience – individual, family and community. They were presented as age, gender or sex, education, family structure, motivation, and funding of entrepreneurial ventures. Also in connection with these were a number of factors, which operate at the nexus of African Caribbean Pentecostalism and entrepreneurship. These include historical antecedents, socioeconomic situations up to the 1950s, the ambiguity of Scriptures towards wealth as well as the impact of the psychology of time on the African Caribbean mind. All these provide a framework in which the existential and transcendental interact in the community of faith. Comparison of educational attainment by ethnic groups 90 CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION The circumstances and experiences of minority groups in a host society have always been of particular interest to researchers. Theologians are no different, as the situation of other human beings ought indeed to be of some import to our understanding of the purpose and meaning of existence. The African Caribbean person living in the context of contemporary Britain is an example of an ‘other’ in a mainstream society, which warrants a detailed understanding. Understanding is incomplete in the absence of a keen appreciation of the economic conditions, which are attendant on the African Caribbean person and the ways in which she responds to opportunities and challenges. For many persons, regardless of status and exposure, there is a reluctance to engage with economics from a theological perspective. For although the early centuries of Christianity and theology featured significant levels of commonality between church and society, this declined tremendously with the onset of what has been referred to as the Enlightenment. The ensuing centuries saw the development of political economy and then economics as academic disciplines. Despite the various British (Anglican) Christian political economists and others who might have been of similar open theological orientation; as well as clearly identified common threads rooted in moral values, there was an increasing divergence between the discipline of economics and theology. A difference in method was clear as economics is increasingly seen as rational; an arriving at facts based on a certain type of mathematical rationality and 1 deduction that was supposedly removed from the shackles of the historical. Theology on the other hand, remains obedient to the historical involvement of God in time. This position informs the method by which it has arrived at its findings, largely using as its point of departure the advent of Christ in history. The ends or objectives of theology include the pursuit of an understanding of God and how God works through history. Economics to a great extent sees utility, efficient allocation of scarce resources and economic growth as not just worthwhile but pre-eminent ends. This would render it at odds with the traditional views of theology – the “queen of the sciences”.1 A synthesis of ideas, attempts and approaches to bridging the gap between theology and economics was undertaken by D. Stephen Long in his work Divine Economy: theology and the market.

Introduction It is a great honor for me to give the Cuhel Memorial Lecture at the Prague Conference on Political Economy for 2011. Franz Cuhel rightly holds an honored place in the development of the pure theory of the Austrian school of economics.1 Ludwig von Mises credits Cuhel (1907) with providing the first presentation of a strict ordinal marginal utility analysis. The confusion in choice theory that eventually lead to the purging of the human element in the economic analysis of decision making would have been avoided had Cuhel’s ordinal presentation of marginal utility analysis been more widely accepted. Instead, it was for Mises (1949) and later Rothbard (1962b) to develop that presentation and offer it as an alternative to the neoclassical theory of microeconomics that developed after John Hicks’ (1939) Value and Capital. The implications, I would argue, are far greater than the technical issues of ordinal versus cardinal utility and the subsequent debate among ordinal utility theorists of marginal utility analysis and demonstrated preference versus marginal rates of substitution and indifference curve analysis, etc. The implications of the debate in choice theory go to core of how we view the individual that we study in economics.2 The University Professor of Economics at George Mason University, and BB&T Professor for the Study of Capitalism at the Mercatus Center.

The future is shrouded in an impenetrable fog of uncertainty, leaving the current level of investment spending to be determined by unruly psychological factors—Keynes’s infamous “animal spirits.” The resultant circular flow will gush and ebb and even on average may not entail enough flow to fully employ the labor force. Catdwell Though at one time a very pure and narrow economic theorist, I was led from technical economics into all kinds of questions usually regarded as philosophical. When I look back, it seems to have all begun, nearly thirty years ago, with an essay on “Economics and Knowledge” in which I examined what seemed to me some of the central difficulties of pure economic theory. Its main conclusion was that the task of economic theory was to explain how an overall order of economic activity was achieved which utilized a large amount of knowl- edge which was not concentrated in any one mind but existed only as the separate knowledge of thousands or millions of different individuals. But it was still a long way from this to an adequate insight into the relations between the abstract overall order which is formed as a result of his responding, within the limits imposed upon him by those abstract rules, to the concrete particular circumstances which he encounters. Introduction It is no exaggeration to say that Capital Theory is fundamental to everything else in Austrian Economics. It lies at its core, implicit in discussions of monetary policy, the business cycle, the entrepreneur, and the subjectivity of value and expectations. Prior to the Keynesian revolution it was Capital Theory for which the Austrian School was most known among mainstream economists. With the advent of Keynesian macroeconomics, interest in Capital Theory all but disappeared. But it has recently been the subject of increasing attention. After a brief overview of the main ideas in Austrian Capital Theory (ACT) from its origins and extensions through the middle of the last century, this chapter will note this rekindled interest and survey recent applications. The Austrian Theory of Capital Production refers to the process of transforming physical resources into more useful forms. This is how value is created. A series of activities must occur in a specific context and sequence, in order for the production project to be successful. Carl Menger (1871) spoke of higher-order (intermediate) goods used in the service of producing first-order (consumer) goods. Böhm-Bawerk (1959) has a similar image of concentric circles – the outermost being most remote from the final product. Hayek (1931) used the image of a production triangle, with the base indicating time and the height indicating value-added.

Introduction The fall of real socialism a few years ago and the crisis of the Welfare State' has meant a heavy blow for the mainly neoclassical research program that has supported social engineering to date, at the same time as the conclusions of the Austrian theoretical analysis on the impossibility of socialism seems to be largely confirmed. In addition, 1996 has been the 125th anniversary of the Austrian School which, as we know, came into official existence in 1871 with the publication of Carl Menger's Grundsat~e.~It seems, therefore, that this is the appropriate moment to return to an analysis of the differences between the two approaches, Austrian and neoclassical, together with their comparative advantages, in the light of both the latest events and the most recent evolution of economic thought. This paper is divided into the following sections. Firstly, the characteristics that distinguish the two approaches (Austrian and neoclassical) will be explained and discussed in detail. Secondly, a summarized account of the Methodenstreit which the Austrian School has been maintaining since 1871 to date will be presented discussing its different "rounds" and implications. A reply to the most common criticisms made of the Austrian approach, together with an evaluation of the comparative advantages of the two points of view, will conclude the paper.

    Discovery, Capitalism, and Distributive Justice. By Israel M. Kirzner. New York: Basil Blackwell, 1989. srael Kirzner is a name familiar to all readers of the Review of Austrian Economics. Kirzner's association with Austrian eco- Inomics began with the inception of his long and distinguished career. He attended Ludwig von Mises's seminar at New York Uni- versity for many years and received his doctorate under the aegis of the great Austrian. His thesis concerns the history of doctrine, and another of his works is a textbook on price theory, But the bulk of Kirzner's career has centered around entrepreneurship. His books and articles on the entrepreneur have secured his standing as the leading Austrian authority in this area. A dominant theme runs through Kirzner's many contributions on his chosen topic. The entrepreneur, as Kirzner sees matters, is en- gaged in a process of discovery. He does not combine resources that already exist to produce goods whose patterns everyone knows. If he did, the existence of profit would be mysterious. Instead, he brings new resources into existence. Further, the class of entrepreneurs must not be confined to a relatively narrow group of businessmen. Kirzner regards the need for entrepreneurship as universal. Every- one must constantly adjust to unpredictable circumstances in an ever-changing world. With the details of Kirzner's view of the entrepreneur, and his account of the market as a selective agent, we are not primarily concerned here. Though much of Discovery, Capitalism, and Distrib- utive Justice is devoted to an account of precisely the topics just mentioned, the book's key theme (discovery?) lies elsewhere.
