7 • MERCER GAME NOTES 2020-21 MERCER MEN’S BASKETBALL REBOUNDING IS ABOUT DESIRE Ever heard a coach say that rebounding is about desire? Felipe Haase displayed such an attitude in Wednesday's win over North Georgia, which was also his Mercer debut. The Osorno. Chile native scored eight points and grabbed 15 rebounds, a career-high. Two of Haase's 15 boards came on the offensive end. His 15 boards were seven more than the next closest - fellow Bear Leon Ayers III. Ayers III, who also made his debut in the Orange & Black, grabbed eight boards. DEPTH IS PIVOTAL

In preseason interviews, Greg Gary harped on depth and mentioned multiple times how his second Mercer squad is much deeper than the first. That statement proved true in Wednes- day's victory as 11 players saw the court. Of the 11, nine student-athletes played more than 10 minutes and six of the 11 scored at least six points.

THE TRAVELING BEARS Despite struggling on the road in recent seasons, the Bears turned things around in 2019-20, putting together an 8-6 record at true road sites. One of the highlights' of Mercer's time on the road last season was a 71-55 victory in Johnson City, Tenn against ETSU. Mercer was the only squad to knock off ETSU on it's home floor. Beginning Friday with Georgia Tech, the Bears are scheduled to play five non-conference road games - at Georgia Tech (Nov. 27), at Elon (Dec. 6), at Georgia Southern (Dec. 13), at Georgia State (Dec. 16) and at Kennesaw State (Dec. 22). Due to a schedule adjustment, the Bears will now open SoCon play on the road at VMI (Dec. 10).

STAFF CHANGES Greg Gary made staff additions and changes in the off-season, promoting two coaches and adding two new faces to the staff. D.J Byrd was promoted to assistant coach after spending the 2019-20 season as Director of Basketball Operations. In August, Gary named former graduate assistant Luke Brenneman as the new Director of Basketball Operations. His former position was filled by Ben Gilliland, a former student manager for Minnesota men’s basketball. Christian Floirendo joins the team as the Assistant Director of Sports Medicine after spending the previous five years at Purdue. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN: FOLLOW THE BEARS!
