6. University of Advancing Technology - 2625 W Baseline Rd Tempe, AZ 85283 (602) 383-8228 http://www.uat.edu/

This job referral list has fewer contacts than in previous years because some of the organizations are no longer in service or have outdated contact information. The HR Department of the Maricopa County Community College District and the KJZZ/KBZQ SEU have decided to make a determined outreach effort over the course of the next year to recruit additional community organizations that are likely to be more productive and also to provide assistance to these organizations to help them become more productive job referral sources.

In addition to using the Recruitment Sources in Part 2 and the aforementioned Job Referral Organizations to inform the public about specific job opportunities, MCCCD uses other marketing tools to promote general employment with the colleges. In 2012, the Maricopa Community Colleges District Office of Marketing purchased television commercial time on Cox Cable to increase awareness about general employment. It also purchased ad space in 15 Valley bus shelters during 1/28/13-03/24/13 with an emphasis on general recruitment. Additionally, MCCCD purchased ad space on seven electronic billboards for six months; two months each in the fall, spring and summer. The District’s vehicle fleet also uses wraps with recruitment ads. It also has a standing, running ad about employment on the Valley Metro’s light rail.

5. Special Initiatives

a. KJZZ SPOT 127 (#5, #7, #10) In our 2011-2012 report, we provided an update about this new, youth media center, which is designed to empower high school students to stay in school and develop an interest in higher education using digital media, radio, and journalism. The center also offers diverse and supportive programs that are primarily focused on at-risk, low-income students-- including hot meals from St. Mary’s Food Bank on a nightly basis.

SPOT 127 launched its first, two-week-long summer camp session in June 2012 and accepted 11 high school students into the program. It launched its first 9-month long program in September 2012 and 27 of the participants accepted certificates of completion during an awards ceremony on May 14, 2013.

KJZZ and Rio Salado College hosted a community block party on November 28, 2012 to celebrate the official grand opening of the center with participants, their family members, local community leaders and program partners. Visit this KJZZ facebook page for photos: facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151262355244481.481128.171816374480&type=3 and this web page for more back-story: kjzz.org/content/1211/kjzz-spot-127-grand-opening-block-party-nov-28.

SPOT 127 has also created on campus instruction programs for Sunnyslope and South Mountain high school students. Combined, SPOT 127 has already served 153 students in the last year.

b. StoryCorps Phoenix Feb. – May 2013 (16) KJZZ collaborated with one of its most popular program partners StoryCorps to record Arizona stories in February and March of 2013.

StoryCorps recording sessions are interviews between two people who know and care about each other, with a trained facilitator who guides participants through the process. At the end of each 40-minute interview, participants received a CD copy of their recording. With the participants’ permission, the StoryCorps team archives a second copy at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.

Participants were able to see first-hand how the StoryCorps team records interviews and learned valuable interviewing techniques.

StoryCorps currently has one of the largest collections of American audio archives ever gathered, with interviews collected from more than 60,000 people in all 50 states. Thousands of Valley radio listeners tune in to hear excerpts of these interviews every Friday morning on 91.5 KJZZ during Morning Edition.

When KJZZ announced that StoryCorps was accepting reservations from the public on Jan. 31, they were booked within minutes. To accommodate those who were not able to schedule interviews, StoryCorps provided an online Do-It-Yourself Instruction Guide to help participants capture and preserve memories from the comfort of their homes.

Former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor was among the first to participate, but most of the interviewees do not have her fame. For more details and to listen to archived stories, visit kjzz.org/storycorps.

c. KYAY 91.1 Mentorship (16) KJZZ's General Manager Emeritus Carl Matthusen has been working with the San Carlos Apache Tribe to develop its new NCE FM station KYAY 91.1 FM, which finally took to the airwaves this year.

Carl and other key KJZZ staff have met with members of the tribe to answer questions and share strategies about engineering, operations, production and traffic-- and to provide tours of our studios so they can see first hand how we employ these strategies.

KJZZ has also been available to assist the new General Manager Lynn Key as needed and will continue to be available to him as the tribe celebrates its first year on the air. d. KJZZ Fronteras: the Changing America Desk and PIN (#8, #9) The KJZZ news team is reaching beyond the boundaries of our state to report on regional, national and international news that affect Arizonans.

The Fronteras: Changing America Desk expands KJZZ’s ability to provide public radio listeners all across the country with the latest news and information about issues on both sides of the border between the U.S. and Mexico—issues that are overlooked or not covered by other media outlets because of limited resources or staff.

The Changing America Desk is one of seven Local Journalism Centers that the Corporation for Public Broadcasting helped to launch in March 2010 in an effort to develop groundbreaking approaches to newsgathering and distribution. KJZZ has played a significant role in the development of this news bureau since its inception. For more details and back-story, visit fronterasdesk.org/.

During 2012-13 KJZZ and the Fronteras team led the way in reporting on a variety of issues, especially the Supreme Court’s June 25, 2012 ruling of Arizona’s Senate Bill 1070, Mexico’s 2012 elections, the Fast and Furious investigation and the use of drones in U.S. border security. Here’s a list of the more prominent series and specials the team produced in the last year:

Removed: the Realities of Deportation April 2013: fronterasdesk.org/deportation/ Broken Border – Jan. 21-28, 2013: fronterasdesk.org/broken-border/ NAFTA: 20 Years Later – Sept.-Oct. 2012: fronterasdesk.org/nafta/ Heat Wave! - Aug. 13-17 2013: fronterasdesk.org/heatwave/ The Search for Tolerance – July 2012: fronterasdesk.org/news/hatecrimes/ Border Drones – July 2012: fronterasdesk.org/news/borderdrones/ SB1070 – June 2012: fronterasdesk.org/sb1070/ The Border and the Mexican Ballot – June 2012: fronterasdesk.org/mexicanelections/

KJZZ program partners such as NPR and PRI have come to rely on KJZZ and the Fronteras team for news about Arizona and the Southwest they can share with national and international audiences.

KJZZ and the Fronteras team also continue to collaborate with American Public Media | Minnesota Public Radio (APM|MPR) as a contributing member of its Public Insight Network (PIN). The goal of this Public Insight Journalism initiative is to create a comprehensive database exchange in which reporters all across the country can find and share resources. Here’s a list of inquiries the KJZZ and Fronteras teams posed to listeners and sources this last year:
