Born Christian Gabriel Monzon in Burbank, California, he spent his early years in Guadalajara, Mexico before his mother Maria Guadalupe Alcaraz moved the family back to Los Angeles after his father, Pedro Monzon, died. Christian was educated at Canoga Park High school where he cultivated the attributes to excel as a student athlete. Coming from an underprivileged family his desire to attend college was fueled by his aspirations of receiving a scholarship for his athletic abilities. His pursuit of "the dream" was cut short after suffering a knee injury that resulted in reconstructive knee surgery. The injury, first viewed as a setback translated into a blessing when he was noticed by a talent scout from an agency that introduced him to the fashion industry. Christian appeared at IMTA in New York in the summer of 1997. There he managed to attract several modeling agencies worldwide including NEXT Model Management in Los Angeles, New York, Miami, and Paris. He left NEXT after two years and signed with Bleu Models where he has been for the last eleven years. He has appeared in advertising campaigns for Skechers, Abercrombie & Fitch, Perry Ellis, Sean John, Phat Farm, Versace, H&M, GAP, and Dolce & Gabbana. Monzon has worked with many of the worlds’ best models including Kate Moss, Gisele Bundchen, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington and Fernanda Tavares, with whom he graced the coveted fragrance campaign for Dolce& Gabbana. Christian credits his relationship with Dolce & Gabbana as the turning point in his career. He was introduced to the designers Domenico Dolce and Steffano Gabbana during fashion week in Milan, Italy. In 2001 he was offered a contract to represent the company as their underwear model which led to one of three fragrance campaigns and two short movies advertising the Classic perfume for men and a new fragrance for women, "Sicily." The short movies were directed by Giuseppe Tornatore, who won an Oscar for Cinema Paradiso in 1988, and starred Monica Bellucci and Fernanda Tavares. After enjoying enormous success on the runways of the fashion circuit (Milan, Paris, and New York) and spending time on set of commercials and music videos, Christian turned his focus to the theatrical world. Through his studies of the craft at the Carter Thor Studio in Los Angeles he has established himself and paved the path for a long and successful acting career. Monzon's reverence for the art of storytelling has presented several opportunities for producing and writing. Christian established Wyndotte St. Productions in 2002 and has several projects in the developmental stage two of which were written and conceived by Christian. Monzon describes acting and storytelling, not just as a communication device, but also as a tool that leads to self-knowledge and understanding. Anne Leighton as Sarah Montoya Raised in a small town on a farm in eastern Washington, Anne discovered her love of performing on stage as a ballerina and at the young age of ten (the youngest ever) was chosen by Parisian choreographer Jean Paul to appear in his production of The Nutcracker for the U.S. tour. Shortly afterwards her family moved to the Middle East where she lived from her young teens to high school years. Due to the absence of any type of dance institution, she became herself consumed with performing on stage in musicals. While attending the British Academy she performed in numerous stage productions, including Grease, Smike and Nicholas Nickelby. After acquiring her BA she moved to New York to study and perform with The Barrow Group Theatre Company. Recent film credits include the role of Lynn in Eyad Zahra’s film, THE TAQWACORES, starring Noureen Dewulf, the role of Vicky with co-star Brian Krause from Charmed in Mark Vadik’s psycho thriller CYRUS, and most recently won BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS award at the Los Angeles International Film Festival in Ricardo Korda’s film BEAUTIFULLY ESTHER. • Before the Devil Knows You're Dead
Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead by Richard Combs ‘Last acts’ in the cinema can be a precarious business. Not just because film‐makers approaching the end of their careers may be beset by problems of failing health, failing inspiration or failing insurance, but because all the pitfalls of the movie business can make last acts as fragile an undertaking as first acts. Are we justified, then, in thinking that the last film a director makes – or a near‐to‐last film – will necessarily constitute a final statement, a summing up, a gathering together of the artistic experience of a lifetime in one culminating vision? In many cases, obviously not – last films can be as ad hoc, compromised, and a fortuitous grasping of commercial opportunity as a film made at any other stage of a career. But we persist in hoping that the culminating vision comes through. It’s the superstitious feeling that might gather round what anyone (even a film critic) suspects could be their final act, or a getting‐close‐to‐the‐end act: the hope that it will contain something special and retroactively confer significance and coherence on a lifetime of similar but helplessly scattered acts. First, an accounting of this terminal accounting. Only nine of the 19 films in our season were actually the last films made by their directors. The other 10 were followed by one, two, or – in the case of D.W. Griffith – something like a dozen films before their makers were done with the movies, or – again in Griffith’s case – the movies were done with them.

  • Learning in Action: an Investigation Into Karen Resettlement
LEARNING IN ACTION: AN INVESTIGATION INTO KAREN RESETTLEMENT VIA PARTICIPANT OBSERVATION AND PARTICIPATORY ACTION RESEARCH by DANIEL JOSEPH GILHOOLY (Under the Direction of Ruth Harman) ABSTRACT This qualitative research study is informed by my three and a half years participant observation within one Karen community living in rural eastern Georgia and the result of a participatory action research (PAR) project performed alongside three adolescent Karen brothers from 2010 to 2012. Such a fusion of methodologies is what Nelson and Wright (1995) describe as ‘creative synthesis’ where research is done both with and on participants. The first findings chapter (Chapter Six) analyzes how three adolescent Sgaw Karen brothers use online digital literacies to cope with resettlement. This component of the study explores the digital literacy practices of three adolescent Karen brothers as they attempt to navigate multiple institutions like school. Findings from this study suggest that newly arrived immigrant youth benefit in many social, psychological, and academic ways as a result of their online presence. The study looks specifically at how they use online spaces to (a) maintain and build co-ethnic friendships, (b) connect to the wider Karen Diaspora community, (c) sustain and promote ethnic solidarity and, (d) create and disseminate digital productions. This component of the study offers insights that can help teachers better understand their students’ out-of-school literacy practices and ways they can incorporate such digital literacies in more formal educational contexts. This study also provides findings about Karen resettlement via the collaborative enactment of a participatory action research (PAR) project between these three Karen brothers and myself.

As writer- director of such acclaimed films as Magnolia (1999) and There Will Be Blood (2007), Anderson was praised for appearing to have “arrived at his mastery virtually overnight” with his first major release, the 1997 ensemble film Boogie Nights (Gleiberman). Anderson has long been compared to veteran filmmaker Robert Altman, whose take on the typical Hollywood narrative format has clearly influenced Anderson’s films.

  • Crime Scenes: Donald Westlake on Film, Seven-Film Series Features
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ‘CRIME SCENES: DONALD WESTLAKE ON FILM,’ SEVEN- FILM SERIES FEATURES SCREEN ADAPTATIONS OF THE HARD-BOILED CRIME WRITER’S WORK Special event on Friday, May 12: Abby Westlake and Luc Sante in conversation with program curator Levi Stahl May 12–14, 2017 Astoria, Queens, NY, (April 10, 2017)—Donald E. Westlake published nearly a hundred novels under various pseudonyms during his half-century career, the most influential being the hard-boiled Parker novels. Over the years, the hallmarks of a Westlake book never changed: He was a dedicated craftsman, writing clean, unfussy, powerfully effective prose, weaving complicated and surprising plots, and always letting a deep interest in (and often amusement at) human behavior drive the action. His prose has been the font for many and varied works of cinema—more than 30 films have been made of his books. From May 12 through 14, 2017, Museum of the Moving Image presents Crime Scenes: Donald Westlake on Film, an all-35mm screening series, featuring the most successful and interesting films based on Westlake's books. The seven titles include Point Blank (1967) (starring peak Lee Marvin), The Hot Rock (1972) (with Robert Redford), The Outfit (1973) (with Robert Duvall), Cops and Robbers (1973), and Jean-Luc Godard’s Made in U.S.A. (1967). It also includes two for which he wrote screenplays: the 1987 original The Stepfather and his 1990 Oscar- nominated adaptation of Jim Thompson's The Grifters. Organized by guest curator Lev Stahl, Associate Film Curator Eric Hynes, and Chief Curator David Schwartz. Among the highlights of the series is a conversation with Abby Westlake, Donald Westlake’s wife, and historian Luc Sante (Low Life), moderated by guest curator Levi Stahl, with the opening night screening of Point Blank, on May 12.
