Narrator Resurrección Espinosa-Frink is a Spanish playwright, theater director, and writer. Resurrección was born in Tijola, Almeria, Spain where she studied Philosophy and Letters at the University of Granada. She has taught at Connecticut College, University of Rhode Island, and the New London Public school system. She is the Director and Founder of Teatro Latino de New London and the former director of Teatro Latino Estudi- antil at the URI. She lives in New London, participates in the Local Authors Conference, and is a frequent contributor to the Perspective/Opinion page of The Day newspaper. PROGRAM NOTES Los esclavos felices Juan Arriaga (1806-1826) Juan Crisóstomo Jacobo Antonio de Arriaga y Balzola composed his only opera, Los esclavos felices, before he reached the age of 15. It was performed in his birthplace of Bilbao, Spain, and served as his admission credential to the Paris Conservatoire in 1821. His teacher there stated that Arriaga “learnt the first principles of his art almost without a teacher, guided by his genius.” Only a few works were produced in the remaining five years of Arriaga’s life, and only his three fine string quartets still regularly hold the stage. Today’s work opens with a gently swaying six/eight melody which introduces the bouncy long-short-short rhythm of the rest of the work. Classical elegance fittingly pervades this piece from a composer born on the 50th anniversary of Mozart’s birth - Robert Radmer South of the Border Mexican Medley John Philips (b. 1930) John Philips spent his military time in the Air Force Band at Bolling AFB in Washington, D.C. arranging many early swing and big band charts for the group. During his subsequent years as a touring musician, playing bass, piano, guitar, and tuba, he became focused on the continuation of the Count Basie big band tradition. His ASCAP catalogue includes many origi- nal swing and boogie-woogie works, along with numerous traditional and classical medleys. South of the Border Mexican Medley pays tribute to the folk and dance songs of Mexico: Celito Lindo, Las Chiapanecas, La Cucara- cha, and Jarabe Tapatío. Peter and the Wolf Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) Sergei Prokofiev’sPeter and the Wolf, the most popular of all symphonic compositions-with-narrator (Copland’s A Lincoln Portrait comes in a close second), began its life with an ill-attended and indifferently received premiere performance on May 2, 1936, in Moscow. Conducted by the composer, the freshly minted work was performed for the audience of the Moscow Children’s Musical Theater. “Attendance was rather poor and [it] failed to attract much attention,” Prokofiev noted in his diary. How Little Peter Fooled the Wolf—the work’s original title—might have disappeared then and there, but the piece flourished internationally because of the sheer charm of Prokofiev’s breezy score and its clever method of introducing orchestral instruments to children by associating them with characters in the story. While Prokofiev had a distinctive style, he was eclectic in his choice of thematic materials and subjects, reaching people of varied tastes and interests. He wrote music about gamblers, lovers, and political struggle. His late piano sonatas were closely associated with the human drama of World War II. In Peter and the Wolf, with its nursery-rhyme tunes and charming story, Prokofiev bequeathed an indispensable legacy to his youngest listeners. - Kenneth LaFave TOSHIYUKI SHIMADA - BIOGRAPHY ECSO Music Director & Conductor oshiyuki Shimada is Music Director Tand Conductor of the Eastern Con- necticut Symphony Orchestra in New London; Music Director and Conductor of the Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes; and has been Music Director of the Yale Symphony Orchestra of Yale Univer- sity since 2005.
