The nation’s oldest All-America squad was announced this evening on The Home Depot ESPN College Football Awards Show. Third-ranked Florida State had three players selected to the First Team, while top-ranked Alabama, Oregon and Utah all had two honorees. In all, 20 different schools from six conferences were represented on the All-America First Team. The Atlantic Coast Conference, Pac 12, and Southeastern Conference each had six selections. The Walter Camp All-America teams are selected by the head coaches and sports information directors of the 125 Football Bowl Subdivision schools and certified by Marcum LLP, a New Haven- based accounting firm. Walter Camp Football Foundation President James Monico was pleased with the voting participation. “Once again, we had more than 80 percent of the FBS schools participate in this year’s voting,” Monico said. “We are very appreciative of the continuing cooperation of the coaches and sports information directors in our annual effort to honor the nation’s most outstanding college players.” Leading the offensive unit is Mariota, the 2014 Walter Camp Player of the Year. • David Cutcliffe Named Walter Camp 2013 Coach of the Year
For Immediate Release: December 5, 2013 Contact: Al Carbone (203) 671-4421 - Follow us on Twitter @WalterCampFF Duke’s David Cutcliffe Named Walter Camp 2013 Coach of the Year NEW HAVEN, CT – David Cutcliffe, head coach of the Atlantic Coast Conference Coastal Division champion Duke University Blue Devils, has been named the Walter Camp 2013 Coach of the Year. The Walter Camp Coach of the Year is selected by the nation’s 125 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches and sports information directors. Cutcliffe is the first Duke coach to receive the award, and the first honoree from the ACC since 2001 (Ralph Friedgen, Maryland). Under Cutcliffe’s direction, the 20th-ranked Blue Devils have set a school record with 10 victories and earned their first-ever berth in the Dr. Pepper ACC Championship Game. Duke clinched the Coastal Division title and championship game berth with a 27-25 victory over in-state rival North Carolina on November 30. Duke (10-2, 6-2 in the Coastal Division) will face top-ranked Florida State (12-0) on Saturday, December 7 in Charlotte, N.C. The Blue Devils enter the game with an eight-game winning streak – the program’s longest since 1941. In addition, the Blue Devils cracked the BCS standings for the first time this season, and were a perfect 4-0 in the month of November (after going 1-19 in the month from 2008 to 2012). Cutcliffe was hired as Duke’s 21st coach on December 15, 2007. Last season, he led the high- scoring Blue Devils to a school record 410 points (31.5 points per game) and a berth in the Belk Bowl – the program’s first bowl appearance since 1994.

blogs.lse.ac.uk http://blogs.lse.ac.uk/usappblog/2014/04/04/michael-sams-coming-out-is-a-challenge-to-the-vicarious-masculinity-that-american- men-derive-from-the-nfl/ Michael Sam’s coming out is a challenge to the vicarious masculinity that American men derive from the NFL In February, Michael Sam, a college football player eligible for the National Football League’s draft, came out as gay. If signed, he would be the first openly gay player in the NFL. Sara L. Crawley reflects on Sam’s announcement, and the reactions of those both in and out of the NFL. She argues that while his homosexuality is a challenge to the vicarious masculinity that American men derive from the NFL, Sam’s desire to not become an activist means that the heteronormative nature of elite sport in the US is unlikely to change. Gay rights seem to be gaining political ground across the US, and homophobia seems to be fading. Seventeen states have now ratified same-sex marriage, pop icons no longer hide their sexuality, and military sexual assaults gain prominence in the news. Traditional heteronormativity (belief in heterosexuality’s normative superior morality) seems to be taking a cultural beating. So, why is football player Michael Sam’s announcement that he is a gay man national news? Recent pre-draft comings out among women athletes drew no fanfare. The Women’s National Basketball Association’s Brittney Griner is an example. The answer is that the National Football League (NFL) is the holy grail of masculinity in the US– the lynchpin of vicarious masculinity for all American men.
