Artistic Directors’ Note Welcome to Antaeus and the second production of our 2015 season. During this uncertain time for the Los Angeles theatre community, we believe even more strongly in the power of intimate theatre and we’re so grateful to find kindred spirits in ou,y our audience. This is a year of growth for us here at Antaeus. With that in mind, we found ourselves drawn to projects that force us to face our own evolution, and our own sense of growing up. Henry IV, Part One led us into an exploration of honor, of the relationship between fathers and sons, and of the choices we make in determining our own destinies. With William Inge’s beautiful and stealthy Picnic, we hope to delve into the predicaments of small-town life in 1950s Kansas as the residents grapple with ambition, desire and loneliness. -

The genre, which began with the arrival of Beverly Hills, 90210 (1990) on Fox Broadcasting Network, focuses on portrayals of different subsets of teenagers in their school, family and interpersonal lives. Sometimes called the “teen soap opera,” the genre is subject to the scrutiny and dismissiveness often reserved for media located in the realm of women’s entertainment. Through comparative discourse and textual analysis bounded in socio-cultural consideration of each temporal cycle, this thesis asserts that close attention to this genre can valuably articulate approaches to racial representational strategies. -

Position Paper For "Teens, Tweens, and In-Betweens: The Legacy of the WB" by Eric Whedbee Glen Oak, Sunnydale, Capeside, and Stars Hollow are a selection of fictional towns from The WB’s most popular television shows. Programs such as 7th Heaven, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Dawson’s Creek and Gilmore Girls relied heavily on the construction of a well-defined community. These towns were similar in that they were typically represented as safe and friendly small towns. Presented as fictional towns, they borrow from the American imaginary and often recall an imagined former era of relative tranquility. They are towns that exist alongside real locations and implicitly provide an alternative. Their artificiality is essential for the type of community they construct--a simulacrum of small town America, even as this notion is at times undermined as it is in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Most notable in this cycle of the WB dramas that emphasized setting was Gilmore Girls. The town of Stars Hollow was filmed on the WB's back-lot and this location choice enabled it's hermetic world to develop fully. Not only does Gilmore Girls set its main characters against the backdrop of a very lively community, this community is made up of both secondary and tertiary characters. Stars Hollow itself is often a central concern for one of the program's subplots and this narrative is often driven by these peripheral characters. It is this feature, which Gilmore Girls finessed, that set the WB’s programming apart from other dramas during this time. With the end of the WB and its transformation into the CW, community-driven dramas became a rare occurrence. -

The CW Network
H-Announce Edited Collection: The CW Network Announcement published by Lisa Perdigao on Friday, June 23, 2017 Type: Call for Papers Date: August 1, 2017 Subject Fields: Communication, Cultural History / Studies, Journalism and Media Studies, Popular Culture Studies Call for Papers: The CW Network The CW network offers a compelling coming of age story reflective of its changing demographic. In 2006, the network was launched as a joint venture of CBS and Warner Bros. Entertainment and next generation to The WB and UPN (1995-2006), which followed Fox’s success and shift in television broadcasting away from the Big Three (ABC, CBS, and NBC) and toward young viewers. The CW’s early programming borrowed from The WB and UPN, airing the final seasons of 7th Heaven (The WB: 1996-2006; The CW: 2006-2007), Gilmore Girls (The WB: 2000-2006: The CW: 2006-2007), and Veronica Mars (UPN: 2004-2006; The CW: 2006-2007) and continuing longer runs withSmallville (The WB: 2001-2006; The CW: 2006-2011), One Tree Hill (The WB: 2003-2006; The CW: 2006-2012), America’s Next Top Model (UPN: 2003-2006; The CW: 2006-2015), andSupernatural (The WB: 2005-2006; The CW: 2006- ). However, in its early years, it also introduced new seriesGossip Girl (2007-2012) and The Vampire Diaries (2009-2017), which helped to define the emerging network and establish its brand identity. The premiere of Arrow in 2012 and expansion of the Arrowverse with The Flash (2014- ), Legends of Tomorrow (2016- ), and acquisition of Supergirl (CBS: 2015-2016; The CW: 2016- ) led to the network’s self-identification as the “destination of superhero television.” Initially marketed as “TV to Talk About,” The CW has redefined itself as “TV Now” (2012), and, most recently, encourages its viewers to “Dare to Defy” (2016), introducing popular and critically- acclaimed programming that reflects the network’s strategies of adaptation and innovation. -
