(ALLIED POWERS) BRITAIN Work Force  Women were forced to do the jobs of men  Some women were drafted into the civilian workforce  Some women worked in “hard jobs”  Some women even joined the armed forces mainly in support roles such as nurses and auxiliaries Work Force  Higher demand for women to work in heavy industry  while women in the countryside took up farming and filled local political posts  Numbers of women flocked to wartime nursing  some took up the novel role of marraines de guerre Nurses in the War  Many women served at the front as nurses and medical orderlies  Three-month Red Cross nursing courses were opened everywhere FRANCE Women in the Army  Female volunteer movement fueled by some women's desire to serve in the army and defend the Fatherland  received limited public support  Some women went to the front line and fought in the army secretly CONTINUED
