Vol. 9, May-June, 1983 national hcnol-societyol ~------October 12-14 Sigma Theta Tau Celebrates 27th Biennial Convention

"Image Makers: Richness and Diversity," the theme for the 27th Biennial Convention, will explore what image today's nurses want to project, and the best ways to present that image. Eleven nursing leaders will focus on the multi-faceted image of the nurse as a researcher, educator, practitioner, administrator, and scholar. Wednesday will begin with an opening luncheon featuring the Lexington Chamber of Commerce Minutemen, a fife and drum corps presentation, followed that evening with the Founders' Awards Banquet. Dynamic presentations by nursing leaders will take place on Program Day, Ference Thursday, with Friday's recognition luncheon and installation of the 1983- Fawcett 85 officers closing the Convention. Angela Barron McBride, Ph.D., F.AAN., Professor and Chair of the Graduate Department of Psychiatric/ Mental Health Nursing, University School of Nursing, will keynote the Program Day with "From Being Concerned About Our Image to Becoming Image Makers." An original Sigma Theta Tau film collage of nurses performing today's multiple and diverse roles will be presented. A panel of nursing leaders and image makers will discuss and react to the film at its completion. Concurrent program sessions will be divided into four Image Maker areas: Policy and Planning, Knowledge Builders, Toward a New Horizon, and Health Care Delivery. - SIGMA THETA TAU - POSITION PAPER - TEN-YEAR PLAN FOUNDED IN 1922 to enhance and support nursing scholarship, Sigma Theta Tau is the honor society of nursing. Today, in 1983, the society boasts more than 65,000 members located throughout the world and 161 chapters in universities and colleges in the United States and Puerto Rico.

THE INTELLECTUAL CAPABILITY of its members, their commitment to excellence and their leadership roles in educational and practice settings place the members of Sigma Theta Tau in key positions to influence and direct health care service and education in the next century.

IN 1981, THE SOCIETY announced the launching of a significant undertaking aimed at improving the health of the public: the implementation of a ten-year plan to increase the scientific base of nursing practice and sensitize the public to the need for the nursing research required to achieve it

SIGMA THETA TAU'S ten-year plan, entitled Focus on Scholarship, has three distinct components that must be developed sequentially as well as concurrently. These are resource development, knowledge expansion, and knowledge utilization.

RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT implies a substantial increase in public and private support for nursing research. It demands the dissemination of findings, translated in not meaningful words and actions that demonstrate to the profession itself and to the public the benefits of that research.

EXPANSION OF KNOWLEDGE recognizes that while a knowledge base does already exist, answers to many significant questions have yet to be found. Nursing's knowledge base will be expanded through a global network of well-prepared nurse researchers.

FINALLY, THE UTILIZATION OF KNOWLEDGE requires that research findings will be diffused through all facets of nursing so that nursing's ever growing knowledge base will underlie nursing practice in all settings. Professional nurses then will be seen as designers of the health care delivery system.

IN ANNOUNCING THIS ten-year plan - a blueprint for excellence - the members of Sigma Theta Tau commit themselves to strengthening the education of nurses, to creating a better world for nursing research and practice, to international dialogue among nurses, and to improving the care and health of all peoples throughout the world.
