Following the commencement exercises, Chancellor and Mrs. Obear request the pleasure of your company at an informal reception honoring special guests and graduates at Gates 2 and 3 of the Arena. SENATOR

Jim Sasser is serving his third term in the United Sates Senate. Tennessee's senior senator was reelected to the seat in 1988 and is the Chair of the Senate Budget Committee. He is also a member of the Appropriations, Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, and Governmental Affairs Committees. Senator Sasser was born in Memphis and spent his boyhood in West Tennessee. His primary and secondary education was in Tennessee's public schools and he attended The University of Tennessee, Knoxville prior to his graduation from . From that institution he earned a B.A. and an advanced degree in law. From 1957 until 1963 he served in the U. S. Marine Corps Reserve. Before becoming a United States Senator, Jim Sasser practiced law as a member of the firm, Goodpasture, Carpenter, Woods and Sasser in Nashville. In addition to his law practice he was chair of the Tennessee Codes Commission until he resigned the post to take his seat in the Senate. Throughout the years, Senator Sasser has fought for economic policy measures designed to ease the nation's deficit woes and to help businesses to expand and create jobs. He has also been a staunch proponent of development programs which stimulate the economy and foster economic growth. During histenure in the Senate Jim Sasser has consistently worked on behalf of the nation's elderly and has been instrumental in formulating legislation to meet the long-term health care needs of older Americans. As Chair of the Senate Budget Committee, Senator Sasser is a major force in Congressional efforts to find fair and viable approaches toward lowering the budget deficit. Senator Sasser is married to the former Mary Gorman and they have a son, Gray, and a daughter, Elizabeth. ON ACADEMIC REGALIA

An edifying note contributed by a certain anonymous doctor of philosophy

On at least three solemn occasions during the year — spring, summer and winter commencement — the faculty of the university publicly displays its full academic regalia and participates in the liturgy of processional and recessional, that curious coming and going that symbolizes the ceremony of convocatbn or commencement. The purposes of commencement are well known, but the reasons for the peculiar garb of the celebrants and their odd order of march are often obscure to the audience asthey are, in fact, tothe faculty itself. This note may serve to explain academic dress and the professional pecking order it costumes. Contemporary academics are descendants of clerbal schoolmen in the universities of medieval Europe. Like the clergy, members of the bench and bar, and other learned professbns, the medieval scholar clothed himself in heavy robes to stay warm in unheated stone buildings. Like all members of an hierarchical society, the medieval faculties rejoiced in visible insignia of rank. These outward signs of accomplishment and authority were tailored into the robes. Although the need for such voluminous garments to keep the scholarfrom freezing is long past, the use of them as emblems of dignity remains. You will observe that all caps and gowns worn by our faculty are black, with certain disturbing exceptbns. Black was the color adopted by mutual agreement among American universities at the end of the nineteenth century. In Europe each university has its own distinctive gown, varying in color and cut from all others. A European academic assemblage is a far gaudier occasion than its counterpart in America. Recently, certain universities in this country rashly broke the agreement and authorized robes in their own colors: for example, the crimson of Harvard may be seen in our ranks. This unsuitable spontaneity has been frowned on by sister institutions, yet the mavericks not only persist in their madness, but gain adherents to their ranks with each passing year. There are three basic academic degrees: the baccalaureate or bachelor's degree, the master's degree, and the doctorate. A special style d robe is prescribed for each. The bachelor's gown is sparsely cut, neat, but a bit skimpy and unadorned, as befits apprentices. The master's gown is still simple, but fuller, sports a sleeve of extraordinary design impossible to describe, and has a hood draped from the shoulders down the back. Once used to keep the frost from the tonsured heads of medieval clerks, the hood now is solely a badge of a degree of scholarly achievement. The master's hood is small and narrow, but displays the colors of the institution that awarded the degree. If you knew the colors of American universities, you could easily identify whence came our masters. The doctoral robe is the most handsome of academic raiment. Generous of cut, of fine aristocratic stuff, it is faced with velvet and emblazoned with velvet chevrons on the ample sleeves. You will note that most of the velvet facings and chevrons are black, but that some are of other colors. According to personal taste, the doctor may display the color of his doctoral degree on his sleeves and facings: light blue for education, pinkfor music, apricot for nursing, orange for engineering, and many more (see note). The royal blue of the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) is the most commonly seen in an institution such as The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. The doctor's hood is the most elegant of all academic appurtenances. Large and graceful, it is lined in satin with the colors of the university that awarded the degree and is bordered with the color of the degree itself (seenote). Most academic costumes include the square cap called amortarboard. In the processional the baccalaureate candidates enter first, followed successively by the masters candidates with the whole separated from the faculty by a decent interval. After a respectful distance comes the platform party — deans, vice chancellors, provost, chancellor, president and the members of the board of trustees. All remain standing until the platform party is seated. After the ceremony, the order of recessional is the reverse of the processional, ft is hoped that these notes may make more intelligible the spedacle you are witnessing today. A discerning intelligence may detect in it many clues to an understanding of the academic profession as it confronts the ambiguities d the future with ancient wisdom and dignified confidence.

Note: For all academb purposes, including trimmings of doctors' gowns, edging of hoods, and even tassels of caps (if preferred), the colors associated with different disciplines represented at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga are as follows: Arts White Commerce, Accountancy, Business Sapphire Blue Econombs Copper Education Light Blue Engineering Orange Fine Arts Brown Journalism Crimson Law Purple Library Science Lemon Musb Pink Nursing Apricot Oratory (Speech) Silver Gray Phitasophy Dark Blue Physical Educatbn Sage Green Public Administratbn, including Foreign Service Peacock Blue Science Golden Yellow Social Work ; Citron Theology Scarlet FACULTY BANNERS

The banners representthe faculties of The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. On the upper right of each banner is the seal of the campus with the school colors. The basic field color for each banner corresponds to the official color designated for the discipline subject according to the Academic Costume Code and Academic Ceremony Guide.

The UTC banners were designed by Rosemary Varner, an alumna. I. College of Arts and Sciences The open book represents the source of knowledge, the record of the human mind; lines represent relationships and sequential study. The window in perspective represents an opening to the universe, our view to the past and our glimpse to the future. Quills illustrate the means of recording symbols; the negative space between the quills forms the brush of the artist as a sign of creativity. The atom represents the source of energy and the sciences. II. School of Business The circles symbolize a group of persons sharing a common interest and moving around a common center; the triangles represent an organization chart; triangles in circles are formed into a large triangle showing that different groups or departments with different tasks and ideas can work together toward common goals. III. School of Educatbn The open book represents the source of knowledge with the rectangles illustrating learning stages. The three part flame represents forces that combine to influence learning — human, institutional, place, as well as the three principal levels of education — elementary, secondary, college; the flame is also symbolic of enlightenment. Knowledge once gained casts a light beyond its own immediate boundaries. IV. School of Engineering The gear is the traditional symbol of Engineering. The placement in a hierarchy represents stages of learning with the flame representing enlightenment as well as the transformation of knowledge into material form. V. College of Health and Human Services Stylized hands at the base symbolize the entire span and interlinked components of helping services. The trees grow from seedling to sapling, to complex and mature, illustrating human growth to maturation and development from family to society with increasing complexity. The hierarchical arrangement represents levels of relationships. The use of the tree, an element of the natural world, symbolizes health. VI. Library The hands holding the book represent the human element and the written word. There is a constant influencing and changing from one to another and, at times, creating another whole. The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga does not discriminate against prospective or current students or employees on the basis of sex, handicap, race, color, religion or national origin, pursuant to the requirements of Title IX of the Education Amendment of 1972, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and other applicable statutes.
