It helps eliminate distance barriers and can improve access to medical services that would often not be consistently available in distant rural communities. Ellen Kandoro-Dingani PRIMROSE MATAMBANADZO Primrose Matambanadzo is the Executive Director of the Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights which has trained over 1000 health professionals in health and human rights. Her Fellowship will focus on human rights, public health and health advocacy. She is also interested in acquiring relevant knowledge of social media and of ways in which civil society engages the media. During her Fellowship she will spend two weeks at Amnesty International attached to their health and human rights desk and two weeks at Human Rights Watch, during both of which she will develop new materials for training in awareness of human rights. She will also meet officials in FCO and DFID and a range of other organisations including the White Ribbon Alliance on Safe Motherhood and the British Institute of Human Rights, and spend one week at Zimbabwe Human Rights Forum. She will attend the following courses during her Fellowship: Development of a Disease Control Programme at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine Needs Assessment and Planning Tools: Disease Control at District Level at Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine Core Skills in Clinical Governance at Medicology in Manchester MCDONALD LEWANIKA McDonald Lewanika is Director of Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition, an association of more than 350 civic society organisations that share a common mission to promote democracy in Zimbabwe, working on advocacy, information, peace building, youth and human rights. He previously founded Students Solidarity Trust, a non-partisan student based organisation supporting the students movement and student activists. He is particularly keen to increase his knowledge of best practice in advocacy and current thinking around democratistation, governance and leadership and the role of civil society in the UK. His Fellowship will be hosted by Citizens UK, the biggest community alliance in Britain. Bringing together more than 160 schools, universities, trade unions, community and faith groups, Citizens UK aims to empower communities and strengthen civil society. He will gain experience with the Living Wage Campaign, which calls for every worker in the country to earn enough to provide their family with the essentials of life. McDonald will see how the Living Wage Foundation has signed up more than 100 employers including the Olympic Delivery Authority, the Greater London Authority, Barclays and KPMG. He will review the campaign to involve local people in key decisions about the Olympics and how the People's Promise has helped to promote affordable homes through a Community Land Trust. Courses he will attend (tbc) during his Fellowship include: International Human Rights Short Course at the Human Rights Law Centre Global Corridors of Power course at INTRAC, a membership body for UK-based NGOs working for international development in London. KUMBIRAI MAFUNDA Kumbirai Mafunda is the Senior Projects Officer at Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), an independent organisation that aims to strengthen human rights in Zimbabwe through the rule of law. Kumbirai is responsible for ZLHR’s communication strategy targeting members, partners and media outlets. He was formerly a senior reporter on the Financial Gazette. He is keen to augment his knowledge of transitional justice mechanisms and work with transitional justice experts and organisations working in countries undergoing political transition. His Fellowship will be hosted by Common Purpose, a not-for-profit organisation that brings together people from a wide range of backgrounds to help them become more effective leaders in society. Common Purpose runs a range of leadership development courses that offer participants the inspiration, knowledge and connections to help them become more active and engaged in society. They have run four leadership programmes for Zimbabweans in the diaspora in UK and South Africa and hosted a Professional Fellow from Zimbabwe in March 2011. Kumbirai will also spend time at Amnesty International. Courses that Kumbirai will attend include: International Human Rights Short Course at the Human Rights Law Centre Advanced Journalism Social Media Masterclass at The Social Media Academy A bespoke course delivered by Media Trust in new media and presentation skills. ELLEN KANDORO-DINGANI Ellen Kandoro-Dingani is the Media and Information Officer at the Zimbabwe Election Support Network (ZESN), a coalition of non-governmental organisations formed to promote free and fair elections. She is keen to deepen her understanding of the workings of the international media on issues of democracy and elections. In particular, she would like to develop her social media skills and further her understanding of the burgeoning role of social media in the democratic process. Ellen will be based at the Royal Commonwealth Society as a member of the Commonwealth Organisations’ Committee on Zimbabwe. She will meet a range of organisations including the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, All Party Parliamentary Group on Zimbabwe, Commonwealth Secretariat and YouGov. Thomson Reuters will design a bespoke course to cover the following areas of interest: good governance reporting, spokesperson media training, social and multimedia training, press office management, presentation skills training, press release writing, how to raise the profile of your company . She will carry out a full review of the findings of Democratic Audit following the UK Democracy Audit of 2011. She will also attend an introductory course on Adobe Dreamweaver at Xchange Training in London. SPEAKERS OLIVER COLVILE MP Conservative Mr Colvile was born in 1959 into a Royal Naval family, son and grandson of sailors. He went to Stowe public school and joined the Conservative Party’s professional staff at the age of twenty-one. He was agent for Dame Angela Rumbold for ten years and for a number of other prominent MPs and ministers. In his maiden speech he paid tribute to Dame Angela who died in June 2010, and highlighted the problems of mental health and combat stress in the armed forces, an issue he said he would continue to raise. He also pointed to drugs and alcohol problems in his constituency. He was elected to the Select Committee on Northern Ireland and is vice-chair of the All-Party Group on the Royal Marines and Vice Chair of the Zimbabwe APPG, visiting Zimbabwe in March 2011 as funded by the CPA UK Fellowship scheme. Mr Colvile has called for an exit strategy from Afghanistan that would leave the country economically and politically viable. A keen cricket fan, he is a member of the MCC and Surrey County Cricket Club. He is single, and apart from cricket is also interested in rugby and horse racing. RT HON. LORD FOULKES OF CUMNOCK Labour Rt Hon. Lord Foulkes of Cumnock has been a member of the House of Commons, the House of Lords and the Scottish Parliament. Until May 2011 he was a member of both the Lords and the Scottish Parliament but he did not seek re-election to the Scottish Parliament in the 2011 Scottish Parliament election. When Labour won the election in 1997 he was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the Department for International Development. From February 2001 he was Minister of State for Scotland until the May 2002. Lord Foulkes was made a member of the Privy Council in 2002, and stepped down from office at the 2005 general election. Lord Foulkes serves as a member of the Executive Committee of CPA UK and Member of the Board of Governors of the Westminster Foundation for Democracy. He was a member of the Intelligence and Security Committee in the Cabinet Office from 2007 to May 2010 and has been a Member of the Joint Committee on National Security Strategy since October 2010. He has also been a member of the Lords EU Select Committee and member of the Lords EU Sub Committee on Social Policy and Consumer Protection since March 2011. KATE HOEY MP Labour Miss Hoey has been the Labour Member of Parliament for Vauxhall, South London since a by- election in 1989. Miss Hoey was born in County Antrim, Northern Ireland and attended the Belfast Royal Academy and the Ulster College of Physical Education before going on to take an economics degree in London. Miss Hoey was appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to Frank Field, the Minister for Welfare Reform, after the election of the Labour Government in 1997.
