In 2009, CosmoCaixa, the Science Museum of the ”la Caixa” Foundation, underscored its engagement with environmental protection by certifying its Environmental Management System (EMS), adopted in line with the ISO14001 standard and the European EMAS regulation. Aware how important it is to protect the environment, CosmoCaixa management decided to go one step further and made a commitment to continuous improvement towards sustainable development. In this context, the EMS provides us with an effective environmental self-assessment tool which will ensure this continuous improvement through the undertaking and motivation of everyone involved in the institution, from visitors and users to staff and suppliers. The EMS enables us to assess the environmental impacts associated with our activity, and awareness of these impacts helps us conduct a process of continued improvement in our day-to-day work. Our goal is to minimise these impacts and establish self-control mechanisms that guarantee the smooth operation of the system’s entire structure.

Our environment and energy policy

At CosmoCaixa , the Science Museum of the ”la Caixa” Foundation, we base our actions on a strategic Valentí Farràs plan consistent with our Corporate Social Responsibility policy. Protecting the environment, preventing climate March 2020 change and meeting the need for policies aimed at environmental conservation are essential aspects of this strategy.

The Museum is therefore pleased to announce that we have introduced an Environmental and Energy Management System. With this initiative we have made a commitment to work with the utmost respect for our surroundings, devoting particular care and sensitivity towards protecting the environment. Aware of the importance of this issue, we will meet the challenge of the future and undertake to:

- Adapt the Museum’s Environmental and Energy Management to our current reality and organisational culture by implementing the procedures required to ensure the continued improvement of our environmental and energy performance. - Adopt the measures necessary to guarantee compliance with all environmental protection regulations and those related to energy use, consumption and efficiency, as applicable to the Museum's work and facilities (at local but also regional, state and European levels). This includes all conventions and/or agreements entered into by the Foundation through CosmoCaixa Barcelona. - Define and regularly review the goals and milestones established to comply with our environment and energy policy. - Train, engage and raise the awareness of each worker, actively involving them in environmental and energy management while also transmitting our guidelines for the environment and the rational use of energy, energy saving and energy efficiency to our suppliers and subcontractors. - Protect the environment and prevent contamination by promoting the sustainable management of natural resources and efficient use of water and energy, and by encouraging practices that reduce, re- use and recycle waste. - Strengthen energy-saving and optimise energy efficiency in our facilities and activities while proceeding with the acquisition of energy-efficient products, services and equipment. - Encourage communication based on criteria of transparency and informing all stakeholders (employees, visitors, suppliers, subcontractors, institutions, etc.) in order to familiarise them with our environment and energy policy and to develop cooperative relations with them.

Through CosmoCaixa Barcelona, our aim at ”la Caixa” Foundation is to help improve the environment and prevent climate change, for the benefit and enjoyment of the whole of society.

Activity at the

Museum

In June 2014, ”la Caixa” Foundation became ”la Caixa” Banking Foundation. Since then, CosmoCaixa has formed part of that foundation, whose vision is to be a reference institution for society in the development of enduring solutions which:

- Meet the basic needs of the most vulnerable. - Foster social progress by providing a response to the new challenges in research, excellence in training and education. - Bring science and culture closer to all segments of society.

The ”la Caixa” Banking Foundation aligns its strategic programmes with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) to eradicate poverty and fight against inequality and injustice, while promoting the health and wellbeing of all people.

CosmoCaixa, the Science Museum of the ”la Caixa” Foundation, opened its doors on 25 September 2004.

The Museum was created by reconditioning and expanding the building that had been home to ’s first Interactive Science Museum, inaugurated in 1981. This expansion enabled the space devoted to science to be increased from 8,100 m2 to its current total of 33,700 m2.

Throughout the first half of 2019 CosmoCaixa undertook the refurbishment of the Permanent Exhibition Hall, which was inaugurated in July of that year and is now known as the "Sala de l'Univers".

The permanent museum exhibition in CosmoCaixa features a selection of fragments of reality: experiments, objects, animals and plants, and so on.

The temporary exhibitions address the burning topics of the day as well as subjects of a more general, social nature. A programme which includes guided tours, lecture series, debates and other activities is specifically designed for each exhibition.

These are intended to be enjoyed by young and old alike. There are family activities in Touch Touch!, the Maths Laboratories and the Antarctic Base, and activities for children in the Bubble Planetarium, Clik, and Creactivity. The Digital Planetarium offers a presentation that appeals to people of all ages, and in 2012 was equipped with Fulldome stereo technology, the most modern and state-of-the-art, not just in Europe but worldwide.

The Museum produces its own extensive programme of educational activities and scientific dissemination that reaches out to all audiences and includes courses, lectures, symposiums, workshops and so on, while also hosting events organised in collaboration with other institutions. The Environmental Management System

CosmoCaixa’s Environmental Management System (EMS) is based on ISO 14001 and the European regulation EMAS III, which allows companies to voluntarily adhere to an EU Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS). The scope of the EMS includes “management of the museum activity and management and maintenance of the facilities”. This involves a system of continuous improvement implemented in the overall operation of CosmoCaixa. Consequently, routine analysis is carried out based on our environment policy and examining environmental aspects related to the Museum’s activity (consumptions of energy, water, paper, chemical products, etc.) and to its visitors, users and suppliers, and goals are set with a view to reducing the impact of our activity. Regular monitoring is conducted to safeguard the proper functioning of the system. The person responsible for environmental issues is Valentí Farràs, CosmoCaixa’s Director. Additionally, an Environment Committee has been created made up of Heads of Department and coordinated by Gaston Mercader, which meets regularly to address matters related to the Museum’s environmental performance. CosmoCaixa can call upon its own staff to carry out all of the Museum’s management and administrative functions, and on external service providers to maintain and clean the facilities, conduct certain activities and manage ticket sales, among other tasks. Compliance with environmental regulations

The Museum constantly monitors applicable environmental legislation to guarantee its compliance. Additionally, it regularly assesses all legal requirements to which it is subjected and updates procedures accordingly.

The most relevant regulations published in 2019 were the following:

✓ Revised text of the Metropolitan Regulation on Wastewater Discharge, of 3 December 2018, of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB). ✓ Resolution EMC/970/2019, of 5 April, publishing Instruction 1/2019, of 1 February, of the General Directorate of Energy, Industrial Safety and Mining Safety, regarding the procedure to follow in the application of the fourth transitory provision of the Regulation of Fire Protection Facilities (RIPCI), approved by Royal Decree 513/2017, of 22 May, on the first periodic inspection of existing facilities. ✓ Decree 210/2019, of 25 September, determining the competent body to exercise functions in relating to control of the marketing of refrigeration equipment containing fluorinated gases, in accordance with Article 9.8 of Royal Decree 115/2017, of 17 February, and establishing the instrumental aspects for compliance with the obligations established in the aforementioned precept. ✓ Royal Decree 732/2019, of 20 December, which modifies the Technical Building Code, approved by Royal Decree 314/2006, of 17 March.

To meet the maintenance and inspection requirements of its facilities, the Museum has a contract with an external company specialised in carrying out all maintenance activities necessary to ensure their proper condition.

As regards legislation concerning the use of animals, the Museum has contracted an external company to take care of their welfare and documentation. Stakeholder training and awareness-raising

Staff training and awareness-raising

Museum staff environmental training and awareness is key to the success of the Environmental Management System, and CosmoCaixa carries out various actions with its employees to ensure the effectiveness of its EMS. All training activities that had been planned for 2019 were carried out, as well as onboarding activities programmed for new recruits. The CosmoCaixa Environmental Statement is available to all stakeholders through its website. The practice of regularly sending emails (bimonthly or half-yearly, as required) was maintained in 2019, aimed at informing employees and raising their awareness and engagement with regard to the CosmoCaixa Environmental Management System. These messages contain clear, comprehensible information about the Museum’s environmental performance.

Raising public awareness

Raising public environmental awareness is essential for CosmoCaixa. Consequently, of particular relevance in this respect is the Museum’s permanent exhibition, which offers the possibility to take a captivating journey tracing the of matter and life on our planet through experiments, real exhibits and living beings. The culmination of this exhibition is the Flooded Forest, an area of Amazonian jungle covering some 1,000 m2 which enables visitors to observe the animals and plants that live in the rainforest, allowing them to better appreciate the complexity and fragility of natural ecosystems.

Among the awareness-raising activities carried out in 2019 we would highlight the following:

Identification and evaluation of significant environmental aspects

Every year CosmoCaixa identifies all environmental aspects directly related to its own activity and to that of third parties which affect the life of the centre. An annual evaluation is carried out to determine which of these are significant and thus enable action to be taken to reduce their impact.

The method of evaluating these aspects (in both normal and abnormal or emergency situations) is based upon three parameters: magnitude, severity and impact.

The environmental aspects evaluated as significant in 2019 and for which action plans have been set in motion are the following:

The Museum conducts regular controls over significant environmental aspects, monitoring the consumption of natural resources and of materials employed in maintaining and cleaning its facilities, as well as the general waste produced both by internal employees and external companies. CosmoCaixa strives unceasingly to ensure that everyone is aware of the environmental impact of these elements.

An Environmental Programme for CosmoCaixa Barcelona was drawn up in the first quarter of 2019. The monitoring of this Programme throughout the year is presented below.

This represents an increase of 7.37% over the consumption target of 24,059 m3/year, and 3.08% with respect to 2018. The main causes of this increase were the ornamental fountains in the CosmoCaixa facilities. A working group has been created to improve operational control of the water vector. This goal will be maintained in 2020.

Environmental impact indicators

CosmoCaixa regularly monitors the most significant environmental aspects of its activity. Since the Sectoral Reference Document is not currently available, indicators defined by the Museum and based on knowledge of its activity have been used to monitor the evolution of these aspects. These indicators take as their point of reference the numbers of visitors, employees, meals served in the restaurant and square metres occupied, to provide information which can be compared between different periods of time. Evolution of the reference value of the indicators is shown below:

The table shows that the number of visitors decreased by 8.70% with respect to the previous year, and by 4.11% in comparison to the historical average (the Permanent Hall was closed for works until July 2019), while the number of meals served in the restaurant fell by 12.07% with respect to 2018 and 3.54% when compared with the historical average.

The number of employees has remained constant in recent years.

Water management

A. Source of the water

CosmoCaixa’s main supplier of water is the Agbar water distribution company.

Some of the water from the Flooded Forest is also reused to irrigate the Mediterranean Garden.

One general meter and a total of 15 internal meters are used to monitor consumption and detect leaks and other incidents that affect the facilities’ water usage.

C. Water consumption

Total water consumption in CosmoCaixa in 2019 was 25,832 m3, the equivalent of some 10.33 Olympic swimming pools, considering about 2,500 m3 of water is needed to fill just one.

In 2019, total water consumption in CosmoCaixa increased by 3.08% with respect to 2018, and fell by 1.23% with respect to the 2017-2018 average. The main reason for the general increase was consumption by the ornamental fountains in CosmoCaixa facilities.

The analysis of water consumption by use is as follows:

A new consumption control methodology was introduced in 2018 based on readings from the newly installed meters and the uses CosmoCaixa makes of water. For this reason, not all data for these defined uses were available for 2016 and 2017.

The table shows that water consumption in the restaurant has remained stable during the last three years, while general consumption has increased slightly with respect to 2018.

Work to improve consumption monitoring was carried out in 2018 and 2019, in order to quickly detect leaks and avoid wastage.

Water consumption in the restaurant has remained constant in absolute terms over the last three years. The m3/meal-served indicator presents a slight increase with respect to 2018.

The gardens are irrigated using water from the general supply network together with rainwater from the collection cistern and wastewater from the Flooded Forest (reuse). Of the 4,385 m3 consumed in 2019, 3,449 m3 was reused water, some 78.65% of the total amount. In principle, consumption is directly related to the local weather and, more specifically, to rainfall. Monitoring will continue to track the evolution of consumption and detect any possible opportunities for improvement that should be implemented.

Monitoring water consumptions has enabled us to react swiftly to any incident that has been detected.

In 2019, several leaks were detected in in the ornamental fountains which were quickly located and dealt with to avoid greater consumption of water.

Energy management

A. Source of the energy

The electrical energy consumed in CosmoCaixa is supplied by the Nexus Energía S.A. distribution company. A report from the Spanish National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC) states that this electricity comes from 100% renewable sources.

This means that no CO2 emissions were produced by the Museum’s consumption of electrical energy.

The indicator is established with respect to the floor area of the building, since electricity consumption depends not on the number of visitors but on the space to be lit and climatized, together with the number of hours the facilities are in operation. Behaviour of the indicator value is therefore similar to that of the absolute value; the area has not changed, but some improvement can be noted due to more efficient equipment being used.

In general terms, overall electricity consumption fell during 2019 by 7.88% with respect to the previous year. Thus, the behaviour of energy consumption maintains levels far below those of 2017 and 2018.

This is mainly fruit of the investment CosmoCaixa is making into the progressive substitution of old light fittings with more efficient devices (LEDs), the replacement of air-conditioning units and the installation of an energy efficiency management system based on ISO 50001.

This system enables the monitoring and control of consumption for the different uses, which has consequently been reduced in recent years.

Fuel consumption

Diesel is solely consumed in abnormal operating conditions to fuel the emergency generators, which are only employed during power cuts or for maintenance tasks of the generators themselves and other equipment. Diesel consumption is regularly monitored by maintenance staff. A gauge was installed in the tank in 2018 to indicate the amount of fuel available for use. The absolute value of gas consumption has increased by 10.26% with respect to 2018. The indicator also showed an increase of 13.89%, because the number of visitors and meals served also rose in 2019 with respect to the previous year.

Renewable energies

The process of installing renewable energy sources in the Museum was initiated in 2018. The aim of this project is to produce electricity for self-consumption.

The first step consisted in installing two SmartFlower POPs in the Science Plaza. These are smart solar-panel systems, shaped like sunflowers and with an innovative design and state-of-the-art technology. They use solar energy for the highly efficient production of electricity which is then injected into the Museum’s electrical system.

Continuing the renewable energy project, in the first half of 2019 CosmoCaixa installed 268 photovoltaic panels on the roofs of the gazebos in the Science Plaza, the entrance hall roof and the roof of the Modernista building. Installation was completed and the system launched in July 2019. The total installed power capacity is 86.6 kWp.

In general, the following points should be noted: • There has been a decline in ordinary waste with respect to 2017 and 2018, driven by the improvement in wate segregation. • In 2018 and 2019, organic waste was managed separately. • Paper, cardboard and packaging maintained values similar to those of 2018. • Glass waste is removed periodically, so it is possible that one year coincides with one sole collection (and thus a lower quantity managed), while two collections may coincide in the following year (greater quantity managed). • Bulky waste, which is the waste generated when clearing storerooms and in the assembling and disassembling of exhibitions, has increased with respect to 2018. These containers were used on specific occasions in works on the permanent exhibition. • Vegetable oil waste is produced in the restaurant; its volume therefore depends on restaurant activity. • Dead animals, for which a record is kept of the animals that have to be removed, are frozen in a

container and disposed of when their quantity so justifies. This is an event which occurs with no predetermined frequency. • Coffee capsules are a product of the restaurant and their volume depends on demand from customers. Waste capsules are managed prioritising the possibility of reusing the material from which they are made. • Hazardous waste such as toners, batteries, absorbent material and fluorescent lamps is removed twice a year, depending on the quantity produced. A part of the waste corresponding to the previous year was removed in 2018. Thus the quantity of batteries and absorbent material disposed of during 2017 was zero. • Rubble waste was produced in the construction of the green roof.

The hazardous waste figure has risen, as a collection was made which would correspond to 2018. Non-hazardous waste has decreased, as the Permanent Hall was closed until July 2019, which influenced the amount of waste linked to maintenance. Organic waste has been managed separately since 2018. The amount managed is related to restaurant activity. Waste material produced as a result of the improvement works on the permanent exhibition was managed by the external company in charge of the project.

B. Internal management

CosmoCaixa possesses the means necessary to properly segregate all the waste it produces, both in the offices as well as in the rest of the facilities.

Work continued in 2019 on monitoring selective collection, especially by the external companies working in the Museum facilities. These companies are also required to properly separate any hazardous waste they may generate, for which a specific storage area is set aside.

Furthermore, the segregation of bulky waste (wood and metal) was implemented towards the end of 2019.

The waste generated annually is monitored and controlled in the Waste Register, where all outgoing shipments of waste are recorded.

Atmospheric emissions

At CosmoCaixa, equivalent CO2 emissions are calculated for the sources indicated above. A new development in 2017 was the inclusion in these calculations of emissions from the generation of waste and consumption of water (not previously considered). The calculation factors are taken from the Practical guide for calculating greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the Catalan Office for Climate Change (March 2020 version).

This calculation enables evaluation of the real impact in tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions into the atmosphere.

In 2019, emissions in tonnes of CO2 equivalent increased due to a leak of R134A refrigerant gas from one of the air conditioning machines. The leak was located and repaired. The impact on the carbon footprint of CosmoCaixa’s landscaped areas must also be taken into account.

Thanks to the existence of these zones, this impact is calculated to be some 7,506 kg CO2 per year (data taken from the study conducted in 2016).

Wastewater disposal

The sources of the Museum’s wastewater discharge in normal conditions are:

CosmoCaixa holds an authorisation to discharge wastewater, renewed in 2016 and valid until 2024.

The wastewater discharged is similar to domestic wastewater. Nonetheless, our discharge authorisation requires us to perform an annual analysis at different points of the system and to report the results, to confirm that the discharged water characteristics comply with established regulatory limits.

Discharged wastewater was analysed several times during 2019, as isolated cases of parameters being exceeded were detected. These included ammoniacal nitrogen, ammonia and total sulphurs.

These parameters are typical of domestic sanitary wastewater. The source of the nitrogen is the ammonia found in faecal water coming from the Museum toilets. The sulphurs come from the biological reduction of sulphates and the decomposition of organic matter, usual in this type of wastewater.

As a preventive measure, the number of cleaning operations was increased of the entire wastewater collection network and, in particular, of the catchment sumps, to prevent stagnation of this type of water, which leads to chemical reactions and thus increases the nitrogen and sulphur content.

A committee including companies with experience in the field of wastewater disposal was appointed to manage the issues relating to discharges. As a result of its meetings, specific actions were set in motion to investigate the origin of the isolated cases of non-compliance and explore the corrective measures necessary to rectify the quality of discharged wastewater.

The material safety data sheets of cleaning products employed in CosmoCaixa were collected and analysed to ensure these products do not contain chemical components that may have caused the appearance of nitrogen, ammonia and sulphurs in the discharged water. A more thorough programme of cleaning the interior wastewater drainage system has also been established.

Though the action taken succeeded in reducing nitrogen, ammonium and sulphur contents, parameters of the latter remain above the applicable limits. This may still be due to the presence of stagnant water in the catchment sumps, which would skew the final analysis result.

These results were sent to the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona (AMB) in late July to be placed on record. Meanwhile, CosmoCaixa continues to apply the preventive measures aimed at normalising wastewater quality.

Finally, analyses of the Carrer del Cister discharge point were repeated, with the parameters resulting within the applicable legal limits.

Noise

The noise generated by CosmoCaixa in normal conditions is produced by day-to-day museum activity, installed machinery and maintenance operations undertaken in the facilities.

During the initial monitoring of the Museum, noise levels were found to be minimal and thus no analysis has been performed to assess noise emissions.

In 2019 a person living near the Museum made a complaint about noise, the origin of which was related to maintenance operations being carried out on the high-voltage installations. In response to the complaint, the Museum drew up a protocol based on municipal by-laws to ensure that working times and noise limits were observed and future incidents avoided. Page 29 of 33

The table above shows the evolution of consumptions over the last three years. The following conclusions may be drawn:

- White paper: consumption in 2019 was reduced by almost 50% with respect to the previous year, which may have been due to the existence of stock from 2018. - Recycled paper: a reduction of 14.49% was produced. CosmoCaixa actively encourages good practices among office staff. - Toner: consumption was higher in comparison to 2018. We would emphasise that priority is given to performing administrative tasks and communications by digital means. - Light bulbs, solvents, paint, varnishes and so on: these materials are typically employed in maintenance activities; their consumption therefore responds strictly to the needs of the building. Nonetheless, companies that use these products are informed that it would be interesting to apply green purchasing practices in their selection of materials. The continuous process of conversion of light bulbs to LEDs remains ongoing. - Cleaning products: their consumption increased slightly with respect to the previous period,

Biodiversity

CosmoCaixa is situated on urban land, occupying an area of some 25,300 m2, of which 5,000 m2 are gardens, and with a total built area of 33,700 m2. It is located on the side of Tibidabo Mountain and at the edge of Collserola Natural Park, from which it is separated by a very busy road, the Ronda de Dalt (Barcelona’s upper ring road). To develop its activity as a museum, CosmoCaixa boasts a broad diversity of plant and animal species. In 2019 there were 139 in all, most of which were to be found in the Flooded Forest installation and the permanent exhibition, while others formed part of the Touch-Touch! activity or were in reserve or Page 30 of 33

quarantine. In 2018, various actions were undertaken in CosmoCaixa to increase biodiversity, such as installation of the Green Wall and an insectarium. CosmoCaixa’s Green Wall is a vertical garden, created with the idea of making a plant wall that enhances the area’s environmental behaviour and, at the same time, gives visitors an insight into the scenery and vegetation typical of the Mediterranean climate. In contrast to other vertical gardens which are flat, continuous green walls, CosmoCaixa has decided on volumetric vegetation that generates garden space “in 3D”, to strengthen its ecological and aesthetic purpose. Another aspect that makes the Green Wall unique is that it has been created on the basis of five construction systems that use different ways of holding the plants upright. All the systems are monitored with sensors so that interesting data can be gathered (humidity, temperature, solar radiation, and so on) to enable study of their behaviour. Once again, CosmoCaixa presents a project focussed on biodiversity and resilience, and worthy of contemplation. The CosmoCaixa insectarium has been built in the Mediterranean Garden zone and represents a new area of landscaping of some 65.3 m2, with a vertical surface for insects which measures 15.7 m2. This space is made up of six panels formed by steel and pinewood frames each holding compartments with different types of materials (mud, wicker, straw and branches of wood) which the insects can use as habitats. As part of our commitment to improve the biodiversity that surrounds the Museum, in 2019 CosmoCaixa completed the installation of a green roof. This involved converting the roof of the Museum entrance hall into a green covering, resulting in a 180 m2 landscaped passage planted with 18 Mediterranean species, and a space well worth walking. This is an extremely sustainable and attractive idea which also improves the building’s thermal insulation and, thus, its energy efficiency. The initiative to breathe life into the roof falls within the scope of CosmoCaixa’s sustainability actions under the project entitled From the green building to the building that educates. CosmoCaixa is committed to moving forward with this undertaking in order to help create new green spaces in the city and foster sustainable urban development. Pursuant to Regulation 2018/2026, the following information is a summary of the biodiversity indicators: - Total use of land: 25,300 m2 - Total built area: 33,700 m2 - Total landscaped area: 5,000 m2 - Total sealed area: 20,300 m2 - Total nature-oriented area on-site: 360 m2 (green roof + Vertical Garden) CosmoCaixa has no nature-oriented area off-site.

Emergency situations

In terms of safety measures, CosmoCaixa is equipped with an installed fire protection system, which is duly inspected and maintained and meets all applicable regulatory requirements. To counter the potential spillage of any hazardous liquid substance, absorbent minerals (sepiolite) are on hand and easily accessible to all employees in places where the risk of such hazard is highest. The last emergency drill (a requirement of the self-protection plan, or SPP) was conducted on 10 September 2019 and took the form of a simulated escape of an anaconda from the Flooded Forest, requiring a partial evacuation of the building. A report of the drill was drawn up containing detailed conclusions of the event. Page 31 of 33
