Note: All students grade 1-6 are participating in this Earth Day assignment. Students need to produce grade level appropriate projects under the supervision of an adult (please assist with tools and where applicable). Please guide your student as they research and browse online to help them formulate their idea. They will need to spend quality time with you brainstorming, sketching, collecting and listing out their project need. They are to only use materials and tools that are available at home to upcycle and repurpose.

Some suggested searches: Upcycle art, recycled art, upcycled crafts, recycled crafts, DIY crafts, trash to treasure.

Revised due date: Upcycled ART project due 4/10/20 (along with vocabulary, and preliminary sketches and notes)

Revised due date: Artist statement due 4/20 after the spring recess.

Lesson: to make art. Saving our planet and making the world more beautiful one art project at a time.

Essential question: After an item has been used for its original intended purpose what do we do with it? Can we do something else useful with it? Can we it or better yet can we UPCYLE it?

Upcycling is…all about breathing new life into old items you have available right at home.

Why is Upcycling Important?

Teacher: “You may be thinking, “Why should I take the time to upcycle? Isn’t good enough?” Well, there are a lot of reasons why upcycling is so important. First, let’s establish the difference between recycling and upcycling.

While recycling involves breaking down material to be reused (which decreases the material’s value), upcycling is all about finding new, creative ways to reuse the material (thus increasing its value)! So, like recycling, upcycling reduces the amount of waste you generate; however, upcycling also creates a new product that has a functional and/or decorative use.”

Let’s look at some student examples in the gallery.

Questions: Do you recognize the objects use to make each piece? What kids of materials did they use? Where did they go to get these materials? Do you think they put in a lot of effort and craftsmanship into their work and why?

Below are VISUALS to admire not to copy! Be inspired by other artist but always be but be original!

3/16/2020 WEEK 1-2

What is Upcycling? Upcycling is the practice of creating a useable product from waste or unwanted items or adapting an existing product in some way to add value. The purpose of upcycling is reducing waste and improving the efficiency of the resource used.

Next, let’s talk about waste. Remember that helpful catchphrase that everyone uses when talking about how to be eco-friendly? Reduce, reuse, recycle!

Well, I recently learned that these three actions are actually in order of importance. First and foremost, we should make the effort to reduce the number of things we buy and resources we use (i.e., taking shorter showers and avoiding impulse purchases that we don’t really need).

Next is reusing, which includes upcycling!

Last is recycling -- so, while it's obviously important to recycle, it is more important to prioritize those first two steps over recycling.

3/23/2020 WEEK 2-3

Students can learn how to take personal responsibility as they begin to understand recycling is good, but upcycling is better! We create too much waste, and upcycling is a fun way to reduce the amount of garbage we make.

Essential Questions: review and discuss. • What are others are doing that is making the earth “sick.”? • Can you make analogies between the Earth’s systems and the human body’s systems when it comes to the health of both systems? How is the Earth’s sickness similar to what our bodies do when we are sick? • What can we do to stop the Earth from feeling sick? • What can we as artist do to help the Earth feel better? • What the name of the art form that uses waste/trash as inspiration and creative materials?

I CAN collect materials I will be working with for example: empty K-Cups and used coffee filter T-shirts Empty , jugs, and with , Broken jewelry and old toys, Toilet paper rolls and tubes, Empty bottles, jugs, and containers with lids, broken jewelry and old toys, toilet paper rolls and paper towel tubes, , magazines, and old books, Paper and , (Kleenex, cereal, baby wipes),Egg carto, Plastic utensils, Candy wrappers, Juice pouches and juice boxes etc.
