Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation Bureau of Planning and Resource Protection Resource Management Planning Program RESOURCE MANAGEMENT PLAN Walden Planning Unit Including Walden Pond State Reservation May 2013 In coordination with: Crosby | Schlessinger | Smallridge, LLC Walden Planning Unit Including Walden Pond State Reservation RESOURCE MANAGEMENT PLAN 2013 Deval L. Patrick, Governor Timothy P. Murray, Lt. Governor Richard K. Sullivan, Jr., Secretary Edward M. Lambert, Jr., Commissioner John P. Murray, Deputy Commissioner for Park Operations Resource Management Plans (RMPs) provide guidelines for management of properties under the stewardship of the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). They are intended to be working documents for setting priorities, enabling the Department to adapt to changing fiscal, social, and environmental conditions. The planning process provides a forum for communication and cooperation with park visitors and the surrounding communities to ensure transparency in the DCR’s stewardship efforts. One of the most recognizable properties in the DCR park system, Walden Pond State Reservation is an iconic national and international destination. The pond that inspired Henry David Thoreau’s seminal work Walden, or Life in the Woods holds divergent meanings. To many, the reservation is a sacred landscape and international cultural heritage site. To some, it is a profound symbol of both Thoreau’s writings and the genesis of the land conservation movement. Simultaneously, the reservation is valued for its recreation opportunities, whether swimming in Walden Pond’s waters on hot summer days, canoeing on the pond’s calm waters, or cross-country skiing in its surrounding forests. This plan outlines recommendations that will improve the visitor experience for all, while preserving Walden Pond and its surrounding natural and cultural resources for the benefit of future generations. -

Self-Reliance: The Role of Anti-Industrial Individualism in Abolitionism Mid-nineteenth century America witnessed an explosion of civil unrest; changes in political rhetoric, religious revivals, economic revolutions, and unparalleled reforms combined to make the period one of the most volatile in U.S. history. Unmitigated industrialization left Americans confused and restless, and countless reform movements emerged as they attempted to control their surroundings. Many historians contribute these reforms to mass movements such as the Second Great Awakening and the homogenization of the middle class, arguing that large movements gave confused Americans a sense of community. However, in the wake of post-industrial confusion, Americans looked to themselves for security from their constantly changing world, and they saw the impact that they alone could make on society. Americans decried the state of society’s forgotten- including slaves- and the individualism of the post-industrial U.S. inspired a militant abolitionism that led the nation into the bloodiest war in its history. The true source of nineteenth-century reforms thus lies not in mass movements but in a new birth of anti- industrial American individualism. At the turn of the eighteenth century, America was relatively tranquil; picturesque yeoman farmers dominated the countryside, and self-employed artisans filled the cities. However, over the next fifty years, the northern economy underwent an incredible industrial transformation. The following is a sampling of service statistics for FY 2016: 1947 seniors were active at the COA this past year. 63% were female and 37% were male. 177 new se- niors began participating for the first time at the COA. 198 seniors used the van service and received 8005 rides. 499 seniors used Outreach/Social Services, 188 seniors participated in a fitness class and 3311 meals were served at the COA to 244 seniors. Preservation techniques are provided to help improve the longevity of the original media and guides are provided to update this media to a digital format. In doing this, media pertinent to Thoreau and his admirers will not be lost to time and technology. i Executive Summary The Henley Library of the Thoreau Institute at Walden Woods Library has a collection of audio/visual media that are becoming technologically obsolete and in some cases physically deteriorating. These media include many different discussions, analyses, and narratives relating to Henry David Thoreau and those involved with preserving and using his works, such as the Thoreau Society and Walden Woods Project. Given the vast majority of audio and video cassettes to other media, they will be digitally converted, and the other older media, including vinyl and beta max tapes, will be analyzed for the best available preservation solutions other than the climate controlled vault they are currently in. The vault is helping to postpone the deterioration process, and provides vital time to find a solution, but other measures must be taken. The digital files will help the Henley Library to adapt to newer technologies, and our recommendations will help future projects in the digitization and restoration of the rest of the aging media. -

Within and Without: Living in and out of Society with Henry David Thoreau Overview How do some of the ideas presented to readers by Henry David Thoreau in a variety of his works enable readers to think more deeply and clearly about their own place and role in their community and society? Can the words of Thoreau help students to think about their own actions and the degree to which what they do personally might impact what happens collectively? Guiding Questions How does an individual live and thrive in a society? What is the “exchange” in a community? i.e. What do you for it—what does it do for you? How can improving yourself improve the group/community/society? Learning Objectives Examine multiple texts written by Henry David Thoreau including “Slavery in Massachusetts,” “Civil Disobedience,” “Life Without Principle,” and “A Plea for Captain John Brown.” Create a system for exploring Thoreau’s ideas and the ideas of self and peers. Use Thoreau’s works to examine personal relations to community and society. Subjects & Topic Grade levels 8-12 Class Periods 3-5 College and Career Readiness Standards N/A Preparation Required texts: “Civil Disobedience,” “Slavery in Massachusetts,” “Life Without Principle,” “A Plea for Captain John Brown,” selections from Walden. Students should read these pieces (teacher discretion for Walden), and any necessary discussions should ensue. Lesson Activities Activity One: Dialogic notebook Students should use a physical notebook to create a “dialogic notebook.” This is formed by opening the notebok to facing pages, and folding each side in half vertically, in essence creating four columns.
