LIVORNO,

Arrive: 0800 Sunday, 21 July Onboard: 1800 Tuesday, 23 July Brief Overview: Designed to be an “ideal town” during the Renaissance by the Grand Duke of the Medici family, Livorno looks quite different now than it did during its rise in the 16th Century. It was bombed during World War II, leaving many of its chief sites in ruin. Many of its historic buildings, including its cathedral and synagogue, were rebuilt in the 20th century in a more modern architectural style. The district in Livorno, not to be confused with the city of the same name, is filled with canals and waterways connecting the cities factories with the port and still holds much of its original architecture and charm. It’s also a great location to explore the rest of Tuscany, including the many beautiful cities listed below.

Nearby Places to Visit:

Florence: The capital city of the Tuscan region of Italy and known as the birthplace of the Renaissance, the historic city center is considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Forbes rated the city as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Visit this beautiful area in many of our trips, including LIV 501-101 Gems of Italy and LIV 108-101 & the Accademia.

Pisa: While the origin of the city’s name is still a mystery, this city is one that shouldn’t be missed. Its famed leaning tower, which serves as the bell tower of the city’s cathedral, is an important site to see, but there are also plenty of museums and other cultural sites to visit as well. See the Leaning Tower (outside view) with LIV 109-101 Splendours of Pisa. Lucca: Known for being one of Italy’s last “walled” cities, the walls around this town originally served as a military defense. They now act a pedestrian promenade that encircles the historic part of town. Take a stroll through the city in LIV 102-101 Lucca and its Country Villas or explore by bike with LIV110-201 Exploring Lucca by Bike. You can also get a taste of the Montecarlo di Pisa with LIV 113-202 Hills of Lucca & Wine Tasting.

Siena: Another city denoted as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, is often compared to Florence by locals and tourists alike. Siena’s gothic atmosphere and majestic buildings provides a counterpoint to many of the other cities in the Tuscan region. Compare the rival cities of Florence and Siena yourself with LIV 201-201 Siena & Chianti Region or take a stroll through the city’s winding lanes with LIV 103-201 Siena & .
