    VII. The New Golden Age Then something wonderful happened. Just when everything was looking as grim as it could for the art of animation, technology came to the rescue. Here was an art form born only because technology made it possible, almost died when the human costs in time and effort became too high, and now was rescued by technology again. The computer age saved animation. Since computers first came on the scene in the 50s, there have been people who have tried to create machinery and programs to make animation faster, easier and cheaper to both make and distribute. From machines like copiers and scanners, to computers that can draw and render, to the distribution of animation by cable, Internet, phones, tablets and video games - as one character says, “To infinity and beyond” - animation has been totally reborn. As the old animators of the Golden Age were dying off, the new technologies created a huge demand for the old craft. Fortunately, many of the old men were able to pass on their skills to a younger generation, which has helped the quality of today's animation meet and exceed the animation of the Golden Age. In 1985, Girard and Maciejewski at OSU publish a paper describing the use of inverse kinematics and dynamics for animation.!     “If you love what you do, you never work a day in your life.” ~John Lasseter. Preface I’ve always been interested in many different artistic media and building skill sets within each. Having experimented with an array of methods, I’ve discovered hand drawn pieces with individual style personally lead me to the most satisfaction in my work. I’ve always been in awe of animation, especially hand drawn and Claymation. I hadn’t seriously considered this medium until I realized it contained all of my best skill sets; it’s fast paced (if you want to get anywhere with it) yet it requires precision; it’s meticulous work; it allows style and character design; it tells a story; it’s extremely time consuming but rewarding when you finally see your work come to life. I’ve desired a medium that truly makes me invest one hundred percent and keeps me working rigorously for hours and has such satisfaction at the end. As an artist, I enjoy the process of the work rather than the result. With animation, however, it’s a win-win when both the work and the result leave me in awe. I’m amazed when I watch animated films in theaters these days. The advancements in computer animation since 1995 are remarkable. I’m just as impressed with hand-drawn full- length features as well. The medium is just a vessel, but the ability to tell a great story is key. People can make technically great-animated films, but if the story isn’t good and you’re divested as a viewer, it’s pointless.

Technology inspires the art.” That is how John Lasseter, Chief Creative Officer at Pixar Animation Studios, sums up the spirit of the US company that marked a turning-point in the film world with its innovations in computer animation. This is a medium that is at once extraordinarily liberating and extraordinarily challenging, since everything, down to the smallest detail, must be created from nothing. Pixar: 25 Years of Animation casts its spotlight on the challenges posed by computer animation, based on some of the most memorable films created by the studio.     Academic Award for Best Animated Feature: Insight of Animation Industry Shimeng Tong About This Project The Oscars Academy Award for Best Animated Feature was first given for films made in 2001. Until today, this award had been given to 15 animated films. I looked into the records about this award, and tried to understand the animation industry by translating and visualizing the data. My purpose for this project is to figure out the relationships within this social network, between films, their directors, and production companies. Second, to analyze whether the success of an animated feature is depends on the production company or the director. In addition, I would like to emphasize some other findings about animation creation methods and films in foreign languages. Data Collection I got the data directly from the awards record on Oscars’ official website. The data range is 73rd - 88th Oscar, included films made from 2001 to 2015. There were in total 59 nominees, and 15 of them were winners of Best Animated Features. Since there were only text records of each nominees on the website, I had to create a database in Excel with all the information I needed from each film. Including production company, director, and year of releasing. So it will be clearer when I import the edges into NodeXl later. Spring 2016 Shimeng Tong CCTP 696 Data Visualization In order to reveal the existed relationships, I created 3 types of edges within NodeXL: nominees - Oscar, nominees - production companies, and nominess - directors. I marked all the animated features as dots, directors as bule squares, and production companies as green triangles.
