The following synopsis is for the general guidance of visitors, who are requested to assist the administration by observing the rules. Full regula tions may be seen at the office of the superintendent and ranger station. Fires.—Light carefully, and in designated places. Extinguish com pletely before leaving camp, even for temporary absence. Do not guess your fire is out—know it. Camps.—Use designated camp grounds. Keep the camp grounds clean. Combustible rubbish shall be burned on camp fires, and all other garbage and refuse of all kinds shall be placed in garbage cans or pits provided for the purpose. Dead or fallen wood may be used for firewood. Trash.—Do not throw paper, lunch refuse, kodak cartons, chewing- gum paper, or other trash over the rim, on walks, trails, roads, or elsewhere. Carry until you can burn in camp or place in receptacle. Trees, Flowers, and Animals.—The destruction, injury, or disturb ance in any way of the trees, flowers, birds, or animals is prohibited. Noises.—Be quiet in camp after others have gone to bed. Many people come here for rest. -

KATE HARRIS THE CONTOURS OF COLD 1. Storms I am an equation balancing heat loss w ith gain, and tw o legs on skis. In both cases the outcome is barely net positive. T he darker shade of blizzard next to me is my expedition mate Riley, leaning blunt-faced and shivering into the wind. Snow riots and seethes over a land incoherent with ice. The sun, beaten and fugitive, beams with all the wattage of a firefly. Riley and I ski side by side and on different planets, each alone in a privacy of storm. Warmth is a hypothesis, a taunt, a rumor, a god we no longer believe in but still yearn for, banished as we are to this cold weld of ice to rock to sky. Despite appearances, this is a chosen exile, a pilgrimage rather than a penance. I have long been partial to high latitudes and altitudes, regions of difficult beauty and prodigal light. -

The following articles document the initial damage assessment from coastal Alabama to Texas; the change of 217 mi2 of coastal Louisiana to water after Katrina and Rita; estuarine damage to barrier islands of the central Gulf Coast, especially Dauphin Island, Ala., and the Chandeleur Islands, La.; erosion of beaches of western Louisiana after Rita; and the damages and loss of floodplain forest of the Pearl River Basin. Chadwick Hurricane Katrina made landfall in southeast Louisiana on August 29, 2005, and Hurricane Rita made landfall in southwest Louisiana on September 24, 2005. Scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) flew aerial surveys to assess damages to natural resources and to lands owned and managed by the U.S. Department of the Interior and other agencies. Water Quality in Chandeleur Sound in 2008 and 2010 John Lopez, Ph.D., Andy Baker, M.Sc. Ezra Boyd, M.A. Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation October 10, 2010 Introduction Chandeleur Sound is the shallow-water area between Chandeleur Islands, the Biloxi Marsh and the barrier islands along the Mississippi coast. The sound extends southward behind remnants of the barrier islands, and there the sound is referred to as Breton Sound. At the north end of Chandeleur Sound, the sound’s water bottom forms a broad trough which slopes eastward toward the open Gulf of Mexico. This trough narrows westward to the Cat Island Channel just south of Cat Island in Mississippi. Most of the Chandeleur Sound is within Louisiana and is part of the Pontchartrain Basin which LPBF is obliged to monitor for environmental conditions and to restore the natural habitats. This report summarizes water quality for the Chandeleur Sound in 2008 and recently during the summer of 2010. In June 2008, the University of Southern Mississippi was conducting shark research and collected environmental data in Chandeleur Sound. Later that month, the University of New Orleans was en route to do research around the Chandeleur Islands and collected water quality data while crossing Chandeleur Sound. These two data sets were provided to the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation and are shown on Figure 1. -

Donlin Gold Project Chapter 3: Environmental Analysis Final Environmental Impact Statement 3.13 Fish and Aquatic Resources 3.13 FISH AND AQUATIC RESOURCES SYNOPSIS This section describes conditions and evaluates potential impacts to fish and aquatic resources from the proposed action and alternatives. Each alternative is examined by major project component (Mine Site; Transportation Corridor; and Pipeline) by project phase (Construction, Operations, and Closure). An Essential Fish Habitat (EFH) Assessment is provided in Appendix Q. EXISTING CONDITION SUMMARY Fish and aquatic resources are of central importance to the livelihood of residents of the proposed project area. While other chapter sections (Section 3.5, Surface Water Hydrology, Section 3.7, Water Quality, and Section 3.21, Subsistence) discuss topics associated with fish and aquatic resources, this section characterizes aquatic habitat and the diversity, abundance, and distribution of fish in the Kuskokwim River and the drainages affected by the proposed project. The section also describes the regulatory framework associated with the management and protection of area fisheries and aquatic habitats and presents an analysis of expected consequences of the proposed project and alternatives. Both federal and state laws protect fish and aquatic resources that would be affected by components of the proposed project. Key laws and regulations include: the Clean Water Act (CWA), including Sections 402 and 404, which govern discharges to waters of the U.S.; the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (Magnuson- Stevens Act), which governs protection of EFH; and state regulation of mining and water use and discharge permits as well as fish habitat protection requirements. The Kuskokwim River and many of its tributaries, including tributaries in the Crooked Creek drainage, are designated as EFH for Pacific salmon. -

Both categories of species are represented in the benthic and pelagic communities of the Caspian and Aral Seas and are involved in human economic activities. -

THE SCIENCE OF FRINGE EXPLORING: CHAIN REACTIONS A SCIENCE OLYMPIAD THEMED LESSON PLAN SEASON 3 - EPISODE 3: THE PLATEAU Overview: Students will learn about chain reactions, where small changes result in additional changes, leading to a self-propagating chain of events. Grade Level: 9–12 Episode Summary: The Fringe team investigates a series of deadly accidents that they determine are being caused by complex chains of seemingly innocuous events. As they find evidence regarding who could have calculated all of the variables involved in starting the chain reactions, they themselves are setup to be the victims of one of the scenarios. Related Science Olympiad Event: Mission Possible - Prior to the competition, participants will design, build, test and document a "Rube Goldberg-like device" that completes a required Final Task using a sequence of consecutive tasks. Learning Objectives: Students will understand the following: • A chain reaction is a sequence of reactions or events where an individual reaction product or event result triggers additional reactions or events to take place. • Chain reactions are dependent upon variables such as initial conditions, timing, and energy transfer in order to propagate. • The complexity of a chain reaction can range from very little (as in the case of falling dominos) to very extreme (as in the case of cascading failures in a power grid).
