  • Would You Understand What I Meant If I Said I Was Only Human?”
”Would you understand what I meant if I said I was only human?” The Image of the Vampire in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight and Charlaine Harris’s Dead Until Dark Jessica Dimming Fakulteten för humaniora och samhällsvetenskap English IV 15hp Supervisor Magnus Ullén Examiner Adrian Velicu HT 2012 Abstract In this essay I have decided to look at two very popular vampire novels today, Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris and Twilight by Stephenie Meyer. The focus of this essay is to look at the similarities and differences between these two novels and compare them to each other but also to the original legend of the vampire; this by using Dracula and other famous vampire stories to get an image of the vampire of pop-culture. I look at the features of the vampires, their abilities and different skills, and also sex and sexuality and how it is represented in these different stories. Even though the novels attract a wide audience they are written for a younger one and have a love story as its center. In this essay I give my opinion and view of the vampires and what I believe to be interesting with the morals and looks of the vampires as one of the different aspects. 2 Content Introduction 3 The Gothic novel 6 The legend of the vampire 7 Setting 10 Narrator 38 Features of the vampires in Twilight 43 Features of the vampires in Dead Until Dark 53 Vampires as sexual objects 67 Love and sexuality in Twilight 75 Love and sexuality in Dead Until Dark 86 Conclusion 95 Works cited 30 3 Introduction Dead Until Dark and Twilight by top selling authors Charlaine Harris and Stephenie Meyer are both novels written for young adults, somewhere between the ages of 14-24, with one major theme in common, vampires.

FREE BLADE OF THE IMMORTAL: LEGEND OF THE SWORD DEMON PDF Junichi Ohsako,Hiroaki Samura | 224 pages | 09 Feb 2010 | Dark Horse Comics,U.S. | 9781595823380 | English | Milwaukie, United States Blade of the Immortal) | Blade of the immortal, Manga artist, Cool drawings Yoko Yamamoto is the mysterious Yaobikuni, an year-old nun who infuses the power of immortality Blade of the Immortal: Legend of the Sword Demon Manji. After a brutal and bloody battle, slain samurai warrior Manji is brought back to life by a mysterious witch Yaobikuni and cursed with immortality. Haunted by the brutal murder of his sister, Manji knows that only by fighting evil will he regain his soul. The mission sees Manji caught up in a plot by Anotsu to grab power as he battles bizarre henchmen in his quest for redemption. Takashi does make sure however to hold onto his quirky distinctive Blade of the Immortal: Legend of the Sword Demon whilst keeping the film firmly rooted in its Manga source right down to the look of the characters, with their trendy uniforms and punk hairstyles. The sword action comes blood-drenched, very thick and super fast with everyone from Manji himself to Sabato and the main villain Anotsu sporting a variety of unusual and colourful weaponry — from the Japanese take on the three-section staff to two Blade of the Immortal: Legend of the Sword Demon connected forming a deadly staff — slicing and dicing in every fight scene. The fights are certainly chaotic and at times obscure in some of the action but not enough to deter any sense of entertainment from the ensuing carnage.

  • English-Language Graphic Narratives in Canada
Drawing on the Margins of History: English-Language Graphic Narratives in Canada by Kevin Ziegler A thesis presented to the University of Waterloo in fulfilment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2013 © Kevin Ziegler 2013 Author’s Declaration I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This study analyzes the techniques that Canadian comics life writers develop to construct personal histories. I examine a broad selection of texts including graphic autobiography, biography, memoir, and diary in order to argue that writers and readers can, through these graphic narratives, engage with an eclectic and eccentric understanding of Canadian historical subjects. Contemporary Canadian comics are important for Canadian literature and life writing because they acknowledge the importance of contemporary urban and marginal subcultures and function as representations of people who occasionally experience economic scarcity. I focus on stories of “ordinary” people because their stories have often been excluded from accounts of Canadian public life and cultural history. Following the example of Barbara Godard, Heather Murray, and Roxanne Rimstead, I re- evaluate Canadian literatures by considering the importance of marginal literary products. Canadian comics authors rarely construct narratives about representative figures standing in place of and speaking for a broad community; instead, they create what Murray calls “history with a human face . the face of the daily, the ordinary” (“Literary History as Microhistory” 411).

Signature Date: 17/12/2020 ii iii ABSTRACT Since the development of the superhero genre in the late 1930s it has been a contentious area of cultural discourse, particularly concerning its depictions of gender politics. A major critique of the genre is that it simply represents an adolescent male power fantasy; and presents a world view that valorises masculinist individualism.

HOW SUPERMAN DEVELOPED INTO A JESUS FIGURE CRISIS ON INFINITE TEXTS: HOW SUPERMAN DEVELOPED INTO A JESUS FIGURE By ROBERT REVINGTON, B.A., M.A. A Thesis Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts McMaster University © Copyright by Robert Revington, September 2018 MA Thesis—Robert Revington; McMaster University, Religious Studies McMaster University MASTER OF ARTS (2018) Hamilton, Ontario, Religious Studies TITLE: Crisis on Infinite Texts: How Superman Developed into a Jesus Figure AUTHOR: Robert Revington, B.A., M.A (McMaster University) SUPERVISOR: Professor Travis Kroeker NUMBER OF PAGES: vi, 143 ii MA Thesis—Robert Revington; McMaster University, Religious Studies LAY ABSTRACT This thesis examines the historical trajectory of how the comic book character of Superman came to be identified as a Christ figure in popular consciousness. It argues that this connection was not integral to the character as he was originally created, but was imposed by later writers over time and mainly for cinematic adaptations. This thesis also tracks the history of how Christians and churches viewed Superman, as the film studios began to exploit marketing opportunities by comparing Superman and Jesus. This thesis uses the methodological framework of intertextuality to ground its treatment of the sources, but does not follow all of the assumptions of intertextual theorists. iii MA Thesis—Robert Revington; McMaster University, Religious Studies ABSTRACT This thesis examines the historical trajectory of how the comic book character of Superman came to be identified as a Christ figure in popular consciousness. Superman was created in 1938, but the character developed significantly from his earliest incarnations.
