MPS-0746712/1 THE GUARDIAN 18.3.68 Police repel anti—war mob at US embassy BY OUR OWN REPORTERS Britain's biggest anti-Vietnam war demonstration ended in London yesterday with an estimated 300 arrests: 86 people were treated by the St John Ambulance Brigade for injuries and 50, including 25 policemen, one with serious spine injury, were taken to hospital. Demonstrators and police—mounted and on foot—engaged in a protracted battle, throwing stones, earth, firecrackers and smoke bombs. Plastic blood, an innovation, added a touch of vicarious brutality. It was only after considerable provocation that police tempers began to fray and truncheons were used, and then only for a short time. The demonstrators seemed determined to stay until they had provoked a violent response of some sort from the police. This intention became paramount once they entered Grosvenor Square. Mr Peter Jackson, Labour MP for High Peak, said last night that he would put down a question in the Commons today about "unnecessary violence by police." Earlier in the afternoon, members of the Monday Club, including two MPs, Mr Patrick Wall and Mr John Biggs- Davison, handed in letters expressing support to the United States and South Vietnamese embassies More than 1,000 police were waiting for the demonstrators in Grosvenor Square. They gathered in front of the embassy while diagonal lines stood shoulder to shoulder to cordon off the corners of the square closest to the building. About 10 coaches filled with constables waited in the space to rush wherever they were needed and a dozen mounted police rode into the square about a quarter of an hour before the demonstrators arrived. -

THE NEWSREEL ASSOCIATION OF GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND Jeff Hulbert This article is about the British newsreels’ trade body the Newsreel Association of Great Britain and Ireland (NRA). It is not a definitive study, but rather seeks to provide a taste of the treasures that are contained within the Association’s bound minute books, now held in the British Film Institute’s Special Collections department. The minutes are the best record that is left to posterity by an organisation now long gone. It was active as an industry watchdog, protector, promoter and occasional referee for over twenty years and there is much to be learned about the newsreels and the people who played an active role in the business of bringing newsfilm to the cinema screen. At some time between its creation and dissolution all of the correspondence files — that would probably have included many gems as well as the routine stuff of business — disappeared, probably consigned to the dustbin. There were plenty of opportunities for this to happen as the Minutes record several changes of address for the NRA secretariat. The minute books thus provide a record of the way the industry operated — rather than how the companies themselves functioned. An important point to bear in mind is that the minutes themselves only show the business items that reached the NRA council for decision. Other issues would have been decided without reference to it. In this respect the NRA was no different to any other business. This study is not a review of historical events, but rather is about issues as the NRA minutes recorded them. -

The opposition to the Vietnam War in Britain had begun as early as 1953 when a communist sympathizer, Commander Edgar Young, formed the British–Vietnam Committee (BVC) and began publishing the Vietnam Bulletin. The CND – Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament – also raised Vietnam as part of their protests. CND’s position sought to strengthen the United Nations’ role in the conflict for the ‘implementation of the 1954 Geneva agreements’ and ‘the holding of national elections in north and south Vietnam’. In 1962 the BVC held a rally with 70 protesters outside the US embassy in London. The movement grew in intensity after the US began bombing North Vietnam and introduced ground troops in February 1965, sparking protest demonstrations at universities around the country and the formation of the Communist Party dominated British Council for Peace in Vietnam (BCPV) in April 1965. The British Council for Peace in Vietnam (BCPV) that was set up by a group of people close to CND had been the main campaign groups that addressed the Vietnam War until the mid-1960s. -

EA Waited a Week to Watch Inauguration of FDR in 1933 by Robert Lowell Goller Town and Village Historian Copyright 2020 Robert Lowell Goller hanks to modern technology, people across the globe last week watched live on their T television, computer and phone screens the transfer of the presidency from Donald Trump to Joe Biden. The pageantry, musical performances and inaugural speech were all beamed instantaneously to our living rooms and offices. However, until the first live telecast of an inauguration, that of Harry Truman in 1949, citizens had to wait to watch the ceremony. That was the case in 1933, when the presidency transferred from Herbert Hoover to Franklin D. Roosevelt. There was no live television, so citizens eagerly waited for copies of the film to arrive at cinemas across the nation, including the Auro- ra Theatre in East Aurora. Motion-picture technology had been used to record presidential inaugurations since William McKinley’s in 1897, and radio transmitted live audio of the event beginning with Calvin Coolidge’s in 1925, but this was the first time citizens could experience the sights and sounds of a presidential swearing-in so quickly after the event. In fact, the physical journey of the original film became news in and of itself. In addition to capturing the inaugural festivities, cameramen for the Univer- sal Newspaper Newsreel Service were rolling as film canisters were loaded on to a waiting airplane in Washington, D.C. -

Journal of Nationalism, Memory & Language Politics Volume 13 Issue 1 DOI 10.2478/jnmlp-2019-0002 Shadow Memorial Diplomacy: The Ronald Reagan Centennial Year in Central and Eastern Europe György Tóth University of Stirling Abstract This article examines the use of the memorialization of Reagan in transatlantic relations – specifically in the commemorations of the Ronald Reagan Centennial Year in 2011 in Central and Eastern Europe. Extrapolating from the case of Hungary, the article argues that because of the contemporary political status of its drivers and its oblique message, the Reagan Centennial’s campaign in Central Europe can be called “shadow” memorial diplomacy, which in 2011 used the former president’s memory to articulate and strengthen a model of U.S. leadership and foreign policy parallel to and ready to replace those of the then Obama administration. This study can serve as an international extension of previous scholarship on the politics of the memory of Ronald Reagan within the United States, as well as a case study of the use of memory in international relations. Keywords diplomacy; Ronald Reagan; memorialization; transatlantic relations Introduction Despite the great volume of scholarship written about the 40th president of the United States, few scholars have concentrated exclusively on the memorialization of Ronald Reagan. Policy-focused studies have tended to evaluate Ronald Reagan’s legacy as president (Schaller 2011; Heclo 2008). Other scholars have measured the rhetoric about Reagan as a symbol of U.S. conservative ideology and policy by comparing it with the president’s actual record in politics and policy (Longley et al. 2007). -

LEVIN 4.014 The gramophone record, the musical idea, the written notes, the sound waves, all stand in the same internal representational relationship to one another that obtains between language and the world. —Ludwig Wittgenstein, Tractatus logico-philosophicus (1921) “All-of-a-tremble”: The Birth of Robotic Speech On February 16, 1931, the New York Times ran a story on a curious development that had just taken place in England: “Synthetic Speech Demonstrated in London: Engineer Creates Voice which Never Existed” read the headline.1 The day before, so the article began, “a robot voice spoke for the first time in a darkened room in London . uttering words which had never passed human lips.” According to the accounts of this event in numerous European papers, a young British physi- cist named E.A. Humphries was working as a sound engineer for the British International Film Co. when the studio ran into a serious problem. A synchro- nized sound film (then still quite a novelty) starring Constance Bennett had just been completed in which the name of a rather unsavory criminal character hap- pened to be the same as that of a certain aristocratic British family. This noble clan was either unable or unwilling to countenance the irreducible—even if seemingly paradoxical—polysemy of the proper name (so powerful, perhaps, was the new experience of hearing it actually uttered in the cinema) and threat- ened a libel suit if “their” name was not excised.
