USA Hockey Playing Rules 2007-08. Except where noted.

The game will begin with a “center ice” face off, dropped by the game on ice .

When a is scored, the scoring team must clear to “center ice”. The puck will be placed behind the goal in which it was scored, by the referee, and the team that was just scored upon will bring the puck out on the whistle.

The goalie may stop by freezing the puck at any time. If the goalie freezes the puck, the referee will place the puck in the near corner, and the opposing team will bring it out on the referees signal.

Even though there is no Goal Crease a reasonable distance between the skater’s and the must be maintained. Goaltenders may not be interfered with. Referee’s may issue a warning to an interfering player or call a “ Interference” which will result in a penalty against the offending team.

Three skaters and one goalie must be on the ice, for each team, at all times.

Team subs will occupy the area in the neutral zone designated for each team. Extra players can be substituted from the neutral ice area into play through the designated team area.

While in the designated area, the subs may receive passes, return passes or take shots on goal, the subs must remain inside the confines of the designated space. They are not allowed to leave the designated space until it is occupied by another player from their team i.e. for a line change. Players in the designated team area must play the puck immediately (within 2 seconds). Failure to do so will result in a minor penalty.

No player may leave the playing area at any time, unless to occupy the designated team area for a line change. Players may not go into the neutral zone to challenge a player in the designated team area who has the puck.

Line changes may occur on the fly or at any stoppage in play. To change on the “fly”, the player coming out of the zone must be inside the designated team area before the sub can proceed to the playing area. Leaving the box early will result in a minor penalty for to many men on the ice.

Whichever team touches the puck last, when it leaves the playing area, will lose possession of the puck. If the puck goes outside the line, and not directly to a player in the designated player boxes, it will be considered , and the opposing team will take over possession of the puck at the in which it left the playing area. The referee will place the puck at the point of exit and blow the whistle to indicate play to continue.

No checking will be allowed. Contact may be made, but checking will result in a minor penalty.

No slap shots will be allowed. The shooter’s hands cannot come above his/her waist on the back swing. A minor penalty will be assessed.

Players who accumulate more than three (3) minor penalties in a game will be ejected from that game.

In the event of a tie at the end of regulation play, a shoot-out will commence. Each player (excluding ejected players) will shoot in the shoot out round. Each team will take individual turns shooting at the opposing goalie. The visiting team shoots first. The team scoring the most goals after five shots determines the winner. If the remains tied, the same five shooters will repeat the shoot out in the same order as before, in a SHOOT OUT. The first unanswered goal wins the game.

Coaches are not allowed into the playing area at any time. The exception being to attend to an injured player. A minor penalty will be assessed to a coach entering the playing area without express permission of the referee.
