This protection comes from large trees in the riverbed, large stones, deep pools, over- hanging trees, and undercut banks. Poor river dynamics can mean an overwide and shallow river with little cover, which can cause bank erosion in high water because of central deposits of stone that the ordinary current is too weak to move. BKWA and its partners have installed structures of wood and stone designed to provide cover and shelter and to improve river dynamics. These structures can take a variety of forms. Two types that have proven effective in providing protection for the fish are convoys and bunkers. A convoy (Figures –) has one or more whole trees sunk into a pool, weighted down with stone. These projects have been proven to increase the trout population in restored sections (Figure ). Scientific monitoring of the first project site in Vermont across five years showed a percent increase in numbers of trout compared with that river section before the project and with sections of the river that had no structures installed. All of the project work improves habitat for the brown trout population (Figure ), but it also makes the river bet- ter for native eastern brook trout (Figure ). The improvements in cover and shel- ter and in dynamics make the aquatic and riparian habitat better for many other forms of wildlife, from insects to turtles to crayfish. Federal and state agencies in both New York and Vermont obtained fund- ing for these projects, and those public funds were crucial to implementation. BKWA has also raised private funds, but without the public funds it could not have made so much progress in trout habi tat restoration of the Batten Kill. The BKWA board has directors from both New York and Vermont. The over- head is very low: the only staff is the executive director, and there is no office. The organization’s resources are invested in the river. The alliance has proven the capacity to mobilize resources and to engage landowner participation in help- ing this river system to heal itself.
