Language and Identity in the Literature of the Seventeenth- Century New England Puritans Alison Kate Stanley Thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy King’s College, London August 2011 Abstract Seventeenth-century migrants to New England found themselves in a new and unsettling situation, surrounded by alien European and indigenous groups, whose different languages, cultures and religious beliefs questioned and sometimes threatened the beliefs of the settlers. This thesis examines the points at which the colonists came into contact with other cultures, and analyses what these interactions can tell us about how identity was constructed and displayed in the period. I do this largely through analysis of the ways language was used and discussed in contemporary texts printed in London and Massachusetts which aimed to influence readers’ views of colonial identities. By looking at a series of specific challenges when language or issues relating to it became contentious or important, as detailed below, I argue that language was intrinsically connected to English Puritan identity in the period. My first chapter discusses contemporary language textbooks by Williams and Eliot, analysing the ways in which different presentations of similar Native American languages offer insights into the ways contemporary thought linked language to culture and identity. The next two chapters examine the ways language was linked to Puritan religious identity by discussing colonial responses to two new challenges to their beliefs in the 1650s: firstly, the request of the Praying Indians to be accepted into the colonial churches; and secondly, the denunciations of the colonial churches made by visiting Quakers. The final two chapters discuss questions of language and translation during the traumatic events of King Philip’s War. Chapter four analyses war writing which used Old Testament narratives to re-interpret early defeats, and to excuse acts of violence and destruction perpetrated by colonial forces. I have never understood exactly why the makers of American films felt it necessary to hide their methods and aims under blankets of coyness and anecdotes, the one as impenetrable as the other.

    JUST BEFORE HIS EXECUTION Jesus Christ invited his disciples to join him at a borrowed house in Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. As he faced betrayal, arrest and crucifixion, he taught them about the very heart of the Christian faith, namely, holiness. When the time came to leave the house, he continued his teaching. As they made their way through darkened streets that were filled with hostility to him, he spoke of how he would empower them to be his witnesses in a world that would often hate them too. Mankind has been dealing with temptation since the early days in the Garden of Eden when Satan tempted Eve. Temptation is the devil’s invitation to live a life patterned after him, rather than after God. We are constantly tempted. You were tempted this past weekend. Tell me, for just a moment, you didn’t think “I should just stay home from church today. I’ll go next week.” Maybe you added a little rationalization, “I haven’t skipped in a couple months.” You don’t have to raise your hands. I know… But many of you went anyways. You resisted that temptation. You made a choice to follow God, rather than Satan. It was a little thing, but it was a victory over sin. Those of you that did not go, work on it this weekend, eh? Jesus shared the Last Supper with his disciples on Thursday evening, with his arrest, trial and crucifixion following on Friday. After the supper, Jesus took the disciples to a grove at the foot of the Mount of Olives, to the Garden of Gethsemane. He brought Peter and the brothers James and John with him as he moved off, preparing to pray alone. Luke took his account up a notch and tells us in 22:43‐44, Then an angel from Heaven appeared and strengthened him. He prayed more fervently, and he was in such agony of spirit that his sweat fell to the ground like great drops of blood.

    Missive to Columbus – Glorious Day I really enjoy Contemporary Christian Music. It is one reason I chose the church that I did. I like listening to books on CD when I drive, but I am playing worship music at work and in the car almost every day. Now, I grew up Catholic and I had heard of Amy Grant, but that was pretty much the extent of my Christian music knowledge. It was a big deal when once in a great while we had had an electric guitar accompanying the music. That was the contemporary service. Then, a few years ago I saw Matt Redman live at my current church and I was absolutely floored. I can still remember tearing up as he played You Never Let Go. The music absolutely washed over me and he remains one of my favorite recording artists. There is an unbelievable amount of great worship music out there. I can be seen doing the car dance on the freeways all over town when the Newsboys I am Free comes on. I could just keep rattling off favorite bands and songs, but there is one particular tune we are going to talk about today. I have mentioned Casting Crowns before. I very much enjoy listening to their songs, but something that really stands out for me is the quality of the lyrics. The band is mostly, if not entirely, made up of worship pastors or spouses of pastors and the song writing really speaks to me. Glorious Day is a song that says a great deal.
