A’s News Clips, Wednesday, November 16, 2011 Whodathunkit? Baseball a paragon of labor stability John Shea, Chronicle Columnist The NFL lockout lasted 136 days. The NBA lockout is in its 139th day. By contrast, baseball's collective bargaining agreement expires Dec. 11, but a new settlement through 2017 is expected soon. That means MLB, which had eight strikes/lockouts from 1972 to 1995, now is envisioning 22 years of labor peace. I asked Bill Gould, emeritus professor at Stanford Law School who was instrumental in ending baseball's 1994-95 strike, why basketball can't figure out, like baseball, how to peacefully divide the wealth. Few know sports labor like Gould, whose new book, "Bargaining With Baseball: Labor Relations in an Age of Prosperous Turmoil" illustrates law's impact on baseball history. He pointed to three differences between the sports. 1. The baseball union has maintained more aggressive stances than the basketball union. "The lack of which in basketball led (Commissioner David) Stern, who's a lawyer, to believe he could push the union around, and he's been right, until now at least," Gould said. "Baseball owners learned they can't push these (players) around." 2. The NBA has more "marginal franchises with economically perilous circumstances" than MLB - including Sacramento, Toronto and Memphis. "I don't think baseball has any teams like that," Gould said. I mentioned the A's, and he called them "an aberration. They seem to be calculating that they can go elsewhere." 3. Race. "Look at who comes to NBA games and who has the money," said Gould, who's African American.

  • Make DC Your National Playground
Make DC Your National Playground With enormous museums, elaborate embassies and government buildings everywhere, Washington DC is generally not thought of as a place for those in pursuit of outdoor fun to come visit. However, the weather is usually warm in DC, there are many walking tours for visitors to take, and the national parks in D.C. are among the oldest in the nation. Below is a suggested guide as to how an outdoor lover can have a good time in the Capital. A Weekend of Play in DC *Sip coffee, have lunch, dinner, or cocktails in our patio. Play a game of solitaire or chess while engaging in people-watching. *Visit the National Mall and in between museum hopping at the Smithsonian, take some time to engage in game of Frisbee or watch a baseball game . *Take a paddleboat tour of the Potomac River. A four-person boat can be rented for under $20. *Visit the National Zoo and see wildlife including tigers, butterflies and baby pandas. *At night, take a walking tour of the monuments, when you can enjoy a stroll without crowds and see the memorials lit up. Outdoor Activities Nationals Baseball There’s nothing more patriotic than baseball in Washington, D.C. an during the summer months, visitors can sit back with something cool and watch a game under the stars or sun at RFK Stadium. This season, pitcher Jason Bergmann has stepped up to the plate and fans are keeping their eyes on him to see if he can pull off a no-hitter.

Describing Distributions with Numbers To Describe the Center (the C in SOCS) we use mean and median. The Mean: x (lower case letter used!) • The average of a set of observations. • If the n observations are x1, x 2 ,....., x n , their mean is x+ x +..... + x ∑ xi x = 1 2 n x = n or in more compact notation n • Sensitive to the influence of a few extreme observations . • A skewed distribution will pull the mean toward its long tail. • Not a resistant measure of center . • For example: Which way is this data skewed? Where is the mean likely to be? The Median : the midpoint of the data such that half of the observations are smaller and half are larger Do you think that the median is more or less resistant than the mean? To find the median: 1. Arrange all observation in order of size, from smallest to largest. 2. if n is odd: median = center observation 3. if n is even: median = the average of the two center observations Example: Find the mean and the median of the following data sets. 1. 3 5 6 6 8 10 11 2. 18 22 22 23 24 26 27 27 Mean vs. Median • What is an example of a data sample that the median gives you more information than the mean? • Symmetrical distribution: mean = median. • Skewed distribution: the mean is farther out in the long tail than is the median. (Extreme data points pull the mean toward them and the median is more resistant). • If you are looking at the age of the students in this classroom would you use mean or median? What if you also included the teacher? To Describe the Spread (the S in SOCS) we use the quartiles and the variance.
