The News Reporter, Monday, November 9, 2015 - Page 2B South Columbus, Whiteville, Fairmont tie for Three Rivers Conference title Fourth quarter surge spurs Stallions past Wolfpack 16-11 By DAN BISER Sports Editor

VINEGAR HILL – South Columbus senior fullback Carlos McClure and junior running back Dennis Leggett again proved to be the workhorses in the offensive attack Friday night in the Three Rivers Conference cham- pionship football match-up against arch-rival Whiteville. The Stallions rallied from an 11-0 deficit with two clutch fourth-quarter touchdowns that gave them a 16-11 Senior Night victory over arch-rival Whiteville in front of a near- capacity crowd at Civitan Stadium. The win left South Columbus in a three-way tie for the Three Rivers Conference champion- ship with Whiteville and Fairmont. All finished conference play with 6-1 records. For South Columbus, Friday’s win was its 18th in 24 games with the Wolfpack since the 1992 season. The loss for Whiteville broke an eight-game winning streak and prevented the Wolfpack from claiming the outright TRC title. The game-deciding points came on a 14- yard pass from quarterback Robby Spencer to a wide-open Cedrix Thomas with 48.8 seconds left in the game. McClure added the two-point conversion run. Another Spencer pass earlier in the fourth- quarter - a 24-yard spiral to Bobby Gore - set up a 10-yard extra-effort blast by McClure with 10 minutes 46 seconds remaining. McClure also carried the ball for a successful two-point con- version. Whiteville got the only points of the first half when a 45-yard run by quarterback Nydir Carr set up a 30-yard field goal by Taylor Smith midway through the second quarter. Whiteville extended its lead to 11-0 on its second possession of the third quarter with a 76-yard drive that featured a 25-yard pass from Photo by Grant Merritt Carr to Nate Powell.
