Awards night for the Valley of Chicago put a cap on a record breaking year for the Valley of Chicago. The evening celebrates all the achievements by the Valley during the preceding year (2016). Many awards were given for membership recruitment, service to the Valley and of course the Meritorious Service Award. A special tribute was also made to the two Reunion classes that were inducted during 2016. They were each invited on stage to receive their Scottish Rite Northern Masonic Jurisdiction Certificates and to thank them for their hard work in performing the class degree. “We hope the members of these classes become life long friends and participate in degree work for the Valley for many years to come. “It’s a great way to meet new people and enjoy fellowship and comradery with people you might not have otherwise Awards Night met” stated J. Fraternal Relations Cracker Jack, fast balls and memorabilia filled the Scottish Rite for the Spring Fraternal Relations Night. The theme for the event was Valley Award Winners Meritorious Service Award Winners “Take me out to the ballgame,” in Anthony J. Wegner, Terry J. Hartl, Kurt F. Rubin John D. Riggs, John P. Marquardt conjunction with the baseball themed Spring Reunion. The event was filled with tours of the building, speeches and videos introducing Scottish Rite Masonry to prospective members. They even had the opportunity to test out their pitching arm with a baseball speed machine. The fastest throw of the night was 58 MPH. The highlight came when the drawings occurred for a trip for two to in Arizona. Each candidate and top line sponsor were entered into separate drawings for the grand prizes. The winners were Doug Keppy and Nicholas Smith. Spring Reunion Candidate Nicholas Smith remarked, “I never ever win these type of things. I’m so happy to be joining the Scottish Rite and this is the icing on the cake.”

He grew up on the Northwest side of Chicago and graduated from St. Mel High School. He received a degree in Industrial Engineering at Chicago Industrial Engineering College.

Between 2,800 and 3,000 bicyclists have participated for one or both days to raise money to help end multiple sclerosis. And for 30 consecutive years, the Valley of Chicago has sponsored a bike team and and pro- vided volunteers for a rest stop for both days of the Chicago event. Multiple sclerosis (or MS) is a chronic, often dis- abling disease that attacks the central nervous sys- tem (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. The National MS Society offers an extensive variety of programs, services and resources for people living with MS, including family members, caregivers and other members of June 10-11, 2017 their support systems. “Man Carving His Own Destiny” Sculpture by Albin Polasek (1879 – 1965)

This sculpture is a work by Czechoslovakian artist Albin Polasek. Polasek was heralded as one of America’s foremost sculptors of the 20th century and creat- ed more than 400 works during his prolific career. In 1916, he began heading the Sculpture Department at the Art Institute of Chicago. Polasek remained the head of the department for approximately thirty years.

The “Man Carving His Own Destiny” is made of bronze, stands 19 inches tall, and depicts a man chiseling his body from a stone boulder. Polasek created it, among several, while studying at Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia and is considered one of his signature pieces. The sculpture is set on a black slate base and is signed near the lower right front. The Valley of Chicago commissioned this piece which has a 1917 copyright.
