Romans 7 and Sanctification by Andy Woods Introduction This article will argue that one’s understanding of practical sanctification is profoundly impacted by how one views the “I” in Romans 7:7-25. Specifically, the article will argue that the “I” in Romans 7 is Paul, and in verses 14-25 Paul is reflecting upon his post conversion experience. In addition, the article will maintain that a post conversion view of Romans 7:14-25 leads to a dual nature view of the believer. This view teaches that although the believer has a new nature that he received at conversion, his Adamic nature still exists within him and continues to tempt him to return to his former sinful lifestyle throughout the course of this life. Finally, the article will contend that viewing believers through the lenses of the dual nature view shapes one’s understanding of practical sanctification in several important ways. Who is the Speaker in Romans 7:7-25? Three options for the speaker in Romans 7:7-25 have been proposed.1 First, some have proposed the theory of the Rhetorical “I”. According to this view, the pronoun “I” in Romans 7:7-25 serves as a literary device that depicts all of humanity. Thus, the “I” is not autobiographical but rather represents the experience of everyone. Second, others have proposed the theory of the Representative “I”. According to this view, the pronoun “I” in Romans 7:7-25 depicts the life experience of a representative figure that is typical of every person including the speaker. For example, the “I” of Romans 7:7-25 could represent the experience of Adam at the time of the fall. -

Exum (#1168) Four Lakes Church oF Christ Madison, Wisconsin June 3, 2012 This morning I would like for us to look together at a comment that was turned in by one of our members several months ago – a request for more information concerning what the Bible has to say about handling differences of opinion as opposed to handling scriptural differences. As we study how to handle differences of faith and opinion, I would ask that we look together at a passage in the New Testament book of Romans – Romans 14-15 (p. 1777). Certainly this passage in the book of Romans is a passage that has been terribly misunderstood (and even abused) for many, many years. The passage was written by the apostle Paul to a congregation made up of both Jews and Gentiles, and it was written during a time when many of the new converts were coming right out of the Jewish faith, a time when the early Christians were really struggling to stay united in spite of some widely diverse backgrounds. We might say, then, that the book was written during a time of transition, a time when Gentiles (having previously been under the Law of the Heart) were merging with Jews (having previously been under the Law of Moses), a time when these two groups were merging into one large Christian family, both being governed by the Law of Christ. As you can imagine, there was some tension between those two groups, and nowhere was that tension greater than in the ancient city of Rome. -

GETTING ROMANS TO THE RIGHT ROMANS: PHOEBE AND THE DELIVERY OF PAUL’S LETTER Allan Chapple Summary How did Romans reach the people for whom it was intended? There is widespread agreement that Phoebe was the bearer of the letter (Rom. 16:1-2), but little investigation of or agreement about the exact nature of her responsibilities. By exploring the data available to us, especially tha found in Romans 16, this essay provides a reconstruction of the events surrounding the transport and delivery of the letter to the Roman Christians. In particular, it proposes the following: Phoebe conveyed the letter to Rome, probably by sea; the church in Rome at this time consisted of house-churches; Phoebe was to deliver the letter first to Prisca and Aquila and their house-church; Prisca and Aquila were to convene an assembly of the whole Christian community, the first for some time, at which Romans was to be received and read; Prisca and Aquila were to be asked to arrange for copies of Romans to be made; Phoebe was to deliver these copies to other house-churches; and Phoebe was to read Romans in the way that Paul had coached her at each of the gatherings to which she took it. 1. The term can refer to the unIversal reIgn of God over His creation. It Is also used to refer to the MessIanIc reIgn of Jesus ChrIst as God promIsed DavId – II Samuel 7:16. Later, when the house of DavId was In declIne, the prophet Isaiah clarIfIed that thIs promIse was to be fulfIlled In the MessIah who was to come – Isaiah 9:6-7. In Romans 14:17, the kingdom of God refers to the church. The most Important thIng to be said about the kIngdom of God Is that It Is God’s kingdom – It Is the realm In whIch God rules. FIrst we must see that GOD RULES IN THE AFFAIRS OF MEN (Daniel 4:17). John 18:36. Because the kIngdom of our Lord Is not of thIs world, the church should not contend for cIvIl and polItical power. Yet hIstory Is full of sad attempts by the church to do thIs very thIng. We can see from hIstory that the kIngdoms of men come and go but God’s kIngdom Is forever as Luther wrote In “A Mighty Fortress.” The kIngdom of God Is GOD’S KINGDOM. God rules and Is over and above any kIngdom of man and Is InfInItely superIor to them. The kingdoms of men rIse and fall but the kIngdom of God Is forever. Hoehner, ThD, PhD About This Course This course was originally created through the Institute of Theological Studies in association with the Evangelical Seminary Deans’ Council. There are nearly 100 evangelical seminaries of various denominations represented within the council and many continue to use the ITS courses to supplement their curriculum. The lecturers were selected primarily by the Deans’ Council as highly recognized scholars in their particular fields of study. Course Description The book of Romans is crucial to the understanding of salvation and sanctification. In this course,you will explore the rich truths of justification and other significant topics by completing an exegetical and theological study of Paul’s Epistle to the Romans in the Greek text. The course treats select historical, grammatical, structural, and lexical data that illumine the meaning of this important New Testament document. You will be encouraged to put textual theory into living practice. Romans 11:27-28 Romans 11:27-Paul Cites Isaiah 59:21, 27:9 To Teach That There Will Be A National Regeneration Of Israel At Christ’s Second Advent In Romans 11:27, Paul cites Isaiah 59:21 and 27:9 to support his assertion that there will be a national regeneration of Israel, which will take place at Christ’s Second Advent. Romans 11:27, “THIS IS MY COVENANT WITH THEM, WHEN I TAKE AWAY THEIR SINS.’” In Romans 11:26, Paul cites Isaiah 59:20 to support his statement in Romans 11:26a that “ all Israel will be saved ,” which refers to the national regeneration of the nation of Israel at Christ’s Second Advent. Isaiah 59:20, “A Redeemer will come to Zion and to those who turn from transgression in Jacob,” declares the LORD. In Romans 11:27, Paul cites a combination of Isaiah 59:21 and 27:9 as further support for his prediction in Romans 11:26 that there will be a national regeneration of Israel. Isaiah 59:21, “As for Me, this is My covenant with them , says the LORD: ‘My Spirit which is upon you, and My words which I have put in your mouth shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your offspring, nor from the mouth of your offspring's offspring,’ says the LORD, ‘from now and forever.’” Isaiah 27:9, “Therefore through this Jacob's iniquity will be forgiven; And this will be the full price of the pardoning of his sin : When he makes all the altar stones like pulverized chalk stones; When Asherim and incense altars will not stand.” Paul is quoting exactly from the first line of Septuagint translation of Isaiah 59:21, which is kaiV -

260 JOURNEY ROMANS 14 MY FAITH IS PERSONAL BUT IT’S NOT PRIVATE Romans 14 is a chapter on personal convictions not a private faith. The Bible no where gives anyone the right to a private faith though it is a personal faith. Because not everyone is at the same place in their walk with God. And when we don’t take notice of where people are in the Christian walk… THEN THE STRONG BECOME A STUMBLING BLOCK TO THE WEAK. Instead of stumbling block. Eugene Peterson says it in the Message like this. Romans 14:13 (MSG) 13 Forget about deciding what's right for each other. Here's what you need to be concerned about: that you don't get in the way of someone else, making life more difficult than it already is. “Making life more difficult for newer Christians.” That is a horrible thought. How does that happen? It’s when the lines of personal and private faith are blurred we end up with legalism. Imposing our standards on others. We just got in the way of people’s growth in Christ. Welcome to the 260 Journey. Let me explain the origin of legalism and how important Romans 14 is to keeping it out of our lives. Legalism originates when Christians make a personal conviction, the corporate conviction. When you believe what God demands of you , He is demanding of everyone. Now there are extracurriculars that God will call His servants to that is not meant for everyone. But be very careful of imposing those extracurriculars on those around you. -
