It gives me great pleasure to announce Dr. Tami Hendriksz as the new Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM).

Dr. Hendriksz is herself a Touro alumnus from the College of Osteopathic Medicine (COM), finishing her undergraduate degree at the University of California, Los Angeles before completing medical school at Touro. She went on to complete her Pediatric internship and residency at the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. She returned to her alma mater to serve as a faculty member and to work with the local underserved pediatric population.

Her medical background is that of a pediatrician, but she brings a wealth of additional experience and honors to the position. Dr. Tami Hendriksz Dr. Hendriksz has worked at Touro for the last 12 years through a variety of roles, including Vice Chair of the Primary Care Department, Assistant Dean of Clinical Integration, Associate Dean of Clinical Education, and Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. She is a Professor of Pediatrics and has been a 5-time recipient of the Touro University California College of Osteopathic Medicine Teacher of the Year Award.

Dr. Hendriksz also received national recognition as a recipient of one of the prestigious Innovation in Medical Education Awards offered by the Society of Osteopathic Medical Educators, and most recently as a Champion of Humanistic Care by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation.

She served as the Editor-in-Chief of the eJournal of the American College of Osteopathic Pediatricians for seven years and continues to serve on the editorial board of the Journal of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Hendriksz has numerous publications and has been an invited as speaker at over 30 events across the nation on an array of topics related to medical education, humanism, and pediatrics.

Among her many accolades, Dr. Hendriksz has been the Medical Director of the Vallejo City Unified School Based Clinics since 2014 and continues to practice pediatrics at the Solano County Family Health Services clinic in Vallejo.

As Dean, she will serve as Chief Academic Officer of COM, which includes the growth of interprofessional educational, research, and service opportunities across the TUC colleges and the Touro College and University System (TCUS).

A beloved figure on campus, Dr. Hendriksz brings a passion for osteopathy, medical education, pediatrics, humanism in medicine and medical training, and physician and trainee wellness to the post.

On August 1, 2021 Dr. Hendriksz will take over the reins from Dr. Michael Clearfield, who recently retired after 15 years as Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine.

5 | TUCOM FALL 2021 NEWSLETTER MATCH DAY 2021 The residency Match for class of 2021 was highlighted by the highest ever total in California (50%), highest Primary Care percentage (64%) and above national match rates in 14/15 specialties.

This year TUC had the largest Primary Care match ever and the highest number of Emergency matches in one year.

The match had a slight bias in the favor of California with nine different disciplines represented in CA. We had the first match ever in New Hampshire this year and the COM has now matched to every state except North and South Dakota.

He has breathed air into Touro which moved from a school that was floundering to a successful institution. Dr. Clearfield leaves an indelible epigenetic legacy which is now written into the DNA of not just TUCOM, TUC, and the Touro system but the Osteopathic profession and the hearts and minds of all who have interacted with Dr. Clearfield. ➤

12 | TUCOM FALL 2021 NEWSLETTER CAMPUS NEWS The campus is renovating several buildings to allow student services to move from 690 Walnut back to campus and to allow for more study spaces for students. We are very excited by this buildout.

The DREAM team has trained over 27 Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) cohorts, which equates to more than 450 coach- es and 10 master trainers. This provides training for the Diabetes Education and Empowerment Program (DEEP), where they have trained over 300 trainees and 12 coaches. Medical schools are categorized as focused four-year institutions and among those, there were 10 awarded in 2020-2021.

The campus is in the process of transitioning to 0365 which will be a campus game-changer. All faculty/staff e-mails will be changing. While you can still write to the old e-mail address, be advised returns will be from new e-mail addresses and there may be a few bumps as we get up to speed.

We want to thank student services and most especially Ms. Paisley Rosengren for supporting out students, faculty, and staff with the Drive-thru food give-away events she organized and ran together with Student Services throughout the past year.
