“Livin' La Vida Loca” ga411c11.qxd 1/8/2007 8:51 AM Page 450 “Livin’ La Vida Loca” Artist: Ricky Martin Musical Style Notes Music / Lyrics by Desmond Child “Livin’ La Vida Loca” instantly establishes its Latin musical influence with its percussion style, dance rhythms, and brass-heavy instrumentation. Layered over this are Martin’s and Robi Draco Rosa vocals, Rusty Anderson’s treble-heavy, surf-style guitar solos, and, near the end of the Label: Sony, from the CD track, a dazzlingly high trumpet part played by Tony Concepción. Structurally, it is a verse-chorus form; the verse has two sections of contrasting melodic content, and Ricky Martin (1999) the chorus features an extremely catchy “hook” in the “Livin’ La Vida Loca” line at the end—the kind of musical phrase that gets stuck in your brain for the rest of the day. Between the “hook,” the dance rhythms, the “surf” licks, and Martin’s charismatic vocal style, the different elements of “Livin’ La Vida Loca” comprised a sure-fire formula for a hit single. The musicians on “Livin’ La Vida Loca” are Ricky Martin, lead vocal; Rusty Anderson, guitar; Randy Cantor, keyboards; Robi Draco Rosa, background vocals; Rafael Solano, percussion; and Tony Concepción, trumpet. More information Jarabedepalo Credits Organized by Kesta Happening DC. A piano y Voz will feature Jarabedepalo’s most renowned love songs interpreted by lead singer Pau Dones and pianist Jaime Burgos in intimate theatres. Formed in Barcelona in the mid-’90s, the Latin rock outfit was the brainchild of guitarist and frontman Pau Dones, along with drummer Alex Tenas, bassist Joan Gene, and drummer Dani Forcada. The band made its first big splash with its 1996 album La Flaca, the title track from which became the song of the summer in Spain in 1997. Determined not to be a one-hit wonder, Dones led his band through a series of successful releases over the next decade, including Depende (1998), De Vuelta y Vuelta (2001), Grandes Éxitos (2003), Un Metro Cuadrado (2004), and Adelantando (2007). In 2008, Jarabedepalo announced it was departing from its longtime record label, EMI Music Spain, and going independent. The band compressed the letters in its name and founded its own imprint, releasing, Orquestra Reciclando. ¿Y Ahora Que Hacemos?, the band’s latest album, came out last year. Jarabedepalo has won a host of prestigious music awards and has garnered Grammy nominations. The group’s long list of prominent collaborations includes work with Jovanotti, Niccolo Fabi, La Vieja Trova Santiaguera, Antonia Vega, Celia Cruz, and Vico C.

This essay uses the backlash emanating from the gesture to illustrate a two-part argument: (1) after September 11, 2001, American citizenship (both political and cultural) became a tenuously tied to ideas about patriotism and non-immigrant status, and (2) patriotism was linked to an unyielding support for President Bush and his administration. We can see demarcations between notions of “the citizen” versus “the other” in United States mainstream discussions of the finger incident.

Austin City Limits Debuts New Season with Latin Superstars Juanes and Jesse & Joy Season Premiere Airs October 5th on PBS Austin, TX—August 22, 2013—Austin City Limits (ACL) launches its 39th Season with two of the biggest acts in Latin music today, Juanes and Jesse & Joy. Colombian superstar Juanes performs a thrilling high-energy set, while Mexico City’s sibling duo Jesse & Joy sing a selection of their breakthrough hits. The season premiere—the first to feature Latin artists in the debut episode—airs Saturday, October 5th and showcases ACL's long-standing commitment to feature the best in music from around the world. ACL airs on PBS stations nationwide (check local listings for times) and the full episode will be made available online at acltv.com immediately following the initial broadcast. With six solo albums to his credit and multi-platinum sales of over 16 million, Juanes is the world’s leading all-Spanish language rock artist. An electrifying guitarist and gifted songwriter, Juanes made his ACL debut back in 2005, and has since gone on to win multiple Grammy Awards and a record number of Latin Grammys. The Associated Press calls Juanes “the first truly international rock star to emerge from Latin America.” Juanes returns to the ACL stage in a dynamic performance, kicking things off with “Fijate Bien,” the Latin Grammy- winning title track to his debut album. He pays tribute to one of his inspirations—Bob Marley—with a Latin spin on the reggae classic “Could You Be Loved?”. By the time he launches into his huge hits, Juanes proves he doesn't need to sing in English any more than he needs a surname to thoroughly rock the Austin audience.
