7 Technique

Š Rhythm & technique is what allows an athlete to improve their maximal velocity and overall sprint times. Š Conditioning is closely linked to technique Š Strength Application (Most Important) 8 Female Sprint Technique

9 Female Sprint Technique

Š Lack of knee lift & horizontal force production are the two major faults in female sprinting.

Š The best female sprinters (Devers, Miller, Jones) all have well developed Front-side Mechanics & Vertical force production 10 Female Sprint Technique

Š Lack of strength results in horizontal force production rather than vertical force production

Š Typical lower limb positions with female sprinters are either obtuse or acute tibia angles with the ground.

11 Technique to make you Fly

12 Starting Technique

Š Very active arm action

„ First 5-8 strides Š Drive knees to chest Š Head stays down for as long as possible Š Piston action with legs

„ (Pfaff) Š Cycle action with legs

„ (Smith)

13 Sprint Technique 1

Š Elbows in front of body

„ If not in front, limits full knee lift position, increases rear side mechanics Š Slight forward body lean Š Chin down

14 Sprint Technique 2

Š Lower leg mechanics cues

„ “Riding the Bike”,

„ “Running over Mini Hurdles”,

„ “Stepping over the long grass” Š Powerful Vertical Force Production into track

„ Only after knee lift motor pattern has been established. 15 Sprint Technique 3

Š Maximal Dorsi-Flexion at ground contact Š Do not try to fully extend thigh with each ground contact o „ Thigh passes only 20 past alignment with upper body)

18 Recovery/Peaking Cycles

Š During any lightening off week, only modify one of the following factors: „ Volume „ Intensity „ Density Š Speed/power athletes only need 7-10 days to “Peak” for top performance.

19 Strength Training

Š Maximal Strength is not a priority for either camps. Š Speed Strength (power) emphasis.

„ Combo Squats,

„ Power Cleans,

„ Jump Squats,

„ Split Jumps

„ Eccentric Calves (Pfaff) 20 Rudiment

Š Pfaff believes in What he calls Rudiment 2-3 times per week all year round. Š Consists of:

„ low intensity plyometrics

„ Medball work

„ Sandpit jumps

„ Muscular Endurance 21
