CHAMPAGNE DELAMOTTE CHAMPAGNE SALON

Delamotte is the sixth oldest Champagne house, Champagne Salon has an almost mythical status in the wine world, founded in 1760. Like sister-house Champagne prized for its extreme finesse, rarity, and incredible longevity. Salon, with whom it shares premises in the grand Salon is the legacy of one man Eugène-Aimé Salon, born in the cru village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Delamotte is late 1800s, whose picaresque life-story saw him rise from poor a devotee of the chardonnay grape. Despite its beginnings in rural Champagne to great wealth and the glittering heritage and quality, Delamotte remains a discreet social circuit of Paris. He loved champagne, and decided to create name, something of an insider’s champagne his own. Obsessed with chardonnay - in his view the only grape ‘pour ceux qui savent’ (“for those in the know”). capable of true finesse - he planted le jardin de Salon, the now Impeccable vineyards and extended lees ageing legendary chalk-rich vineyard, high in the grand cru village of yield wines of great delicacy and refinement. Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, from which Salon is still made today. The original blanc de blancs, Salon is produced in minuscule quantities MAISON CHAMPAGNE DELAMOTTE, and only in exceptional vintages, a few times a decade. LE MESNIL-SUR-OGER

Olivier Leflaive’s operation is surely without parallel in Burgundy, as impressive for the sheer range of wines as for their consistency and quality year on year. The house philosophy is built on respect for the vines and those who tend them. While the house continues to buy grapes from the same 120 or so small vignerons who have supplied them for years, Olivier also owns vineyards in the Côte, managed by legendary technical team. Olivier’s house style combines elegance, freshness and approachability, geared for pleasure. True to appellation and cru, the wines are style classics. BARTA ESTATE

Barta is a young winery with old vineyards, based in the famous Tokaj village of Mád. Businessman Károly Barta had long dreamt of restoring local vineyards razed under Communism. From 2003, Károly bought parcels on the exceptional slope of Oreg Király (King’s Hill, in English). He restored its centuries-old stone terraces, replanted long-abandoned vineyards and established a small winery. The Barta philosophy is one of custodianship and quality, and in restoring their terroir they are also looking to express its highest potential. The vineyards are farmed organically and sustainably, while the winemaking philosophy - under talented young winemaker Vivien Újvári - draws on traditional and modern techniques in pursuit of purity and character. Spanning dry styles as well as Szamarodni and Aszú, Barta’s wines HAND-PICKING NOBLY-ROTTEN GRAPES are a celebration of the distinctive Furmint variety. DESTINED FOR BARTA’S UNIQUE SWEET WINES

530 Vinsanto del Chianti Classico, Vignamaggio, Half V 2013/14 6 15.5 £24.13 Cecilia Beretta is something of a jewel in the crown of the Pasqua family operation, showcasing traditional and innovative styles from notable vineyards in Valpolicella, Soave and the wider Veronese area. Created originally in the early eighties as an institute for advanced viticultural research, the operation was named after the Beretta family and its heiress Cecilia, noblewoman, artist and benefactor, who had inherited a splendid villa with extensive vineyards on the eastern side of Verona. Today, the Pasqua family continues to uphold her legacy of creativity and philanthropy, sponsoring rising talent in fields as diverse as the culinary arts, ballet and sport.

Danish-born, Bordeaux-trained, Peter Sisseck believed that Ribera del Duero had the potential to SEVILLA produce Spain’s finest wines. He sought out parcels of ancient vines, on perfectly exposed terroir, which he instinctively knew would produce something exciting, albeit in small quantities. The stage was set for the arrival of Pingus – a trailblazer amazed the world from day JEREZ one. Flor de Pingus, from younger vines and separate JEREZ DE LA parcels followed, then Psi, Peter’s philanthropic project FRONTERA aimed at retaining the region’s unique old vines. LA RONCIERE, IDAHUE ESTATE

La Roncière was founded in 1949, but only much later in 2017 did the brothers – José Antonio, Andres and Alejandro Orueta – conceive of Idahue Estate. This pioneering project, undertaken in awareness of climate change, was extraordinary in its ambition and execution, involving the creation of an entire estate from scrub in the remote area of Licantén, a cool, coastal sub-region of the Curicó Valley. Due to its unique microclimate and ancient metamorphic soil, Licantén has been formally recognised as a new D.O, one of only four in Chile. Its 200 hectares of vines yield fresh, beautifully-structured, high quality reds from classic French varieties. THE ORUETA BROTHERS OF LA RONCIERE

VIÑAS QUEIROLO

In 1877, the Queirolo family set sail from Genova in Italy, bound for Peru, and settled in . The family’s involvement with wine began in the 1880s when Santiago Queirolo opened the now legendary Queirolo Tavern in Lima, and started making everyday wine and also , which was a huge success - Queirolo’s pisco is a household name in Peru. Fast forward to 2000, the younger generation of Queirolos took the decision to re-develop their wine operation, with a view to producing wines of international quality. On the advice of French consultants they bought land in the Ica Valley - the so-called ‘Valley of the Sun’, an oasis in the Peruvian desert, just three hours south of Lima and 60km from the Pacific. The area is blessed by year-round sunshine, a remarkable diurnal temperature range, and tempering ocean influences. The Queirolos aimed high - literally! In an engineering project of extraordinary ambition (some might say madness!), they went up into the hills, creating vineyards from nothing on vertiginious virgin slopes of ancient rock. The vines were selected carefully, specific clones from a leading French nursery. Meanwhile the winery was revamped, incorporating state-of-the-art kit, geared for quality. As the vines mature, the wines are becoming ever more exciting. The talented winemaking team, led by Luis Gomez, is helping shape a distinctive style for Peruvian wine, founded in freshness, varietal purity and a discreet old world structure. One to follow!
