NEWSLETTER Term 3, 2017 – Week 1

Kia Ora Koutou, Welcome back to Term 3 and a warm welcome to the new families that have joined us at St Columba’s School. We have our School Welcome Mass on Friday 4th August at 9am and everyone is welcome to attend. As Term 3 begins, we are reminded of our Catholic ways of showing the school values of – Love, Care, Faith, Honesty and Respect. The coming term will see our Board of Trustees reviewing the Strategic Plan and the focus of our school’s learning direction. This is where your help is pivotal and there will be a variety of opportu- nities to share your thoughts and potential thinking for what we might consider implementing in our school, or to continue certain practices. The purpose of these sessions is for the Board of Trustees to hear your thoughts about what chil- dren need at SCCS. You are invited to any of the following sessions; Please take the time to schedule the dates in your diary:

1. 2nd August - Whanau and Pasifika Night 2. 17th August - Community Groups and Parents 3. 1st September – St Columba’s Youth Group and Young Adults (Past students)

Take the time to come and share your thinking or fill out the following 5 minute Google Survey. Your input is appreciated - https://tinyurl.com/SCCS-Survey

Accounts and invoicing online: Please note that accounts are strictly 7 days (unless prior arrangement has been made). The school bank account details can be found on your statements, these are emailed to you weekly. Thank you for supporting us with your prompt payments.

The Ned Show - anti bullying message: Next week we have the Ned Show visiting us once more. This show ties in with our ongoing themes of the importance of treating each other with respect, our cornerstone values and our school expectations. Please watch Out for the information about the ‘Pay it Forward’ concept that allows us to see the show for free. This is through optional purchase of yoyo’s. More information will come home next week after the show.

Girls Day Out 2017 This exciting event for our Year 8 girls will be held on Saturday 4 November, Mums and Year 8 girls, please keep this date free on your calendars for our special day. This is part of our school curriculum and is important to grow your daughter self- aware ness and esteem, and to foster positive relationships. Feedback from previous GDO’s have been overwhelmingly positive, to the point that other schools are now joining us. Year 8 girls attendance is expected at this school event. Any questions can be directed to Anne-Marie Harland, through the school office, or email: [email protected]

Reminders about Applications to Enrol: The application to enrol form is the first step in the pre-enrolment process for SCCS. Please submit your preschool child’s application to enrol as early as possible as we have limited spaces available. This allows us to prioritise placements, ensuring that we have spaces for our New Entrants and helps us organise the transition to school process. The cut off for enrolments for 2018 is October 31st.

IMPORTANT! St Columba’s Catholic School Learning Discussions – Week 3, Term 3 – 2017 Tuesday 8th August and Thursday 10th August

We are encouraging all parents/caregivers of students in Years 4-8 to book a time to discuss your child’s learning with their teacher. Students who are in Year 3, your teacher will let you know if you need to book a time. These 15 minute meetings are an opportunity to celebrate your child’s strengths and discuss areas for development. Teachers will discuss with you and your child, results from mid-year assessments that have been used to help plan your child’s next learning steps.

These assessments provide valuable indicators of current achievement levels of progress made and are one of many strategies used by teachers to identify learning needs. Practical suggestions will be provided for ways you can assist your child’s learning at home. The emphasis of these discussions is on your child’s learning journey, should you have other things you wish to discuss, please arrange a suitable time at a later date. We strongly encourage students to attend these learning discussions. It would be preferable if siblings were not present. Supervision will be provided in the library for any siblings.

This year we will again use a web based booking system. Please go to www.schoolinterviews.co.nz and enter the Parent Code: jxm8e and follow the prompts. The site will be open on Wednesday 26th August. If you have any difficulties or do not have access to a computer please contact the school office to make a booking. It would be preferable to ring outside of the following hours of 8.30-9am and 2-3pm, as these are our busy times. You will need to know your child’s year level and their classroom teacher to make a booking.

You will receive information about recent assessments on Monday 1st August. This is so that you have a chance to process the information and think about what you would like to discuss at the meeting. Available Learning Discussion Times

 Tuesday, 8th August – 1pm to 6pm (PLEASE NOTE: SCHOOL CLOSES AT 12.15PM)  Thursday, 10th August - 3pm to 8pm

Parents of students in Years 1-3 will have learning discussions on a separate schedule, and will not be able to book online. You will be contacted by your child’s teacher to make a time to discuss their learning at the appropriate time.

FAITH FACTS On Saturday 22nd July it was the Feast of St . Pope Francis in discussing Saint Mary Magdalene said she became “the apostle of the new and greatest hope.” Her life was changed because she had “seen the Lord...Mary’s experience is an example for us, too.” If we place Jesus at the centre of all that we do, Jesus, who is “is our strength, and our hope,” will change our lives too, Francis said. Prayer for the Cause of Suzanne Aubert’s Sainthood

Join us in prayer in English or Māori. Lord Jesus Christ, you taught us that as often as we show compassion to the least of your brothers and sisters, we show it to you. Hear our prayers and grant that Suzanne Aubert, who supported the Māori people and devoted her life to the care of the poor, the sick and the under-privileged, will be recognised by the Church as one of your true and humble fol- lowers. Amen.

From: https://compassion.org.nz/suzanne-aubert/prayer-for-the-cause/ Host Families Needed for Japanese Students In October 2017, Junior High School students from Japan are being welcomed to St Columba's Catholic School of Hamilton. This will be a wonderful opportunity for both our students and theirs to build inter- national relationships and cultural understanding.

We are looking for kind families with children living at home who would enjoy the experience of hosting a stu- dent for the 16 nights they are in New Zealand. They will be here from 15th October until 31st October, 2017. Students require their own room and three meals a day. Usually host families help each other to transport children to and from school each day, as students are not permitted to travel on their own. Families receive a generous payment at the end of the tour as a thank you for their contribution.

The Japanese students will be 14-15 years old, both boys and girls. Japanese children enjoy relating to younger children. If your children are very young you are still able to apply to participate. As the students are here to learn English we do not place them in homes with other Japanese nationals. We also place students in homes which have a child of the same gender. Families may only host one Japanese student.

Hosting can be a very enjoyable experience for all the family. As well as building international friendships, par- ticipation in hosting helps to build relationships between families in our local community. Often families team up for activities like sightseeing or a bbq, which helps families with a common interest in hosting get to know each other.
