Bessie watches the show in the audience in awe of Ma’s command of the stage. Cast: HOST played by JIM R. COLEMAN MA RAINEY played by MO’NIQUE BESSIE SMITH played by QUEEN LATIFAH Scene 2: Bessie meets Ma Rainey After Ma’s show Bessie hurries to meet Ma on her fabulous train to ask to join her show much to the dismay of Bessie’s brother Clarence. Cast: BESSIE SMITH played by QUEEN LATIFAH CLARENCE played by TORY KITTLES MA RAINEY played by MO’NIQUE PA RAINEY played by CHARLES S. DUTTON DANCER ON MA’S TRAIN played by BRIANA STARKS CHORUS GIRL ON MA’S TRAIN played by JENNIFER SEARS Scene 3: Doreen Dupree Audition Bessie has now left Ma’s show and is starting her own. In this scene she is auditioning girls. They need to be more then your average vaudeville chorus girl. They must sing, dance, be able to tell a joke and above all be darker than a brown paper bag contrary to every other show out there. Cast: BESSIE SMITH played by QUEEN LATIFAH LUCILLE played by TIKA SUMPTER DOREEN DUPREE played by TIA KENDRICKS ETTA JOHNSON played by MARIE BURKE Scene 4: Introduction to Jack Gee After a very successful performance Jack Gee knocks on Bessie’s hotel room door to audition to be her man. BESSIE SMITH played by QUEEN LATIFAH CLARENCE played by TORY KITTLES JACK GEE played by MICHAEL K. WILLIAMS Scene 5: Viola Reunion aka Bessie returns home Bessie returns home to Blue Goose Hollow for a performance. She is excited to show Jack Gee and Lucille around her hometown but not before she has to face her sister Viola. After Bessie’s mother died Viola (the oldest sibling) took over raising her brothers and sisters. A complicated woman, Viola used fear, force and punishment in raising her siblings creating deep emotional scars for Bessie. In this scene the women come face to face after years of not speaking. Bessie cancels her tour to go to the audition and quickly realizes the executives are very far from what she imagined they would be. Bessie does not heed the warning of famous poet Langston Hughes and performs for the crowd. Richard confesses his true feelings for Bessie in this scene. Cast: BESSIE SMITH played by QUEEN LATIFAH RICHARD played by MIKE EPPS Scene 9: Thanksgiving/Intro to Jack Gee Jr At Thanksgiving dinner in the new home Bessie purchased without Jack Gee’s knowledge, she introduces the family to Jack Gee Jr. A young boy she adopted. She doesn’t want to continue in show biz life. Cast: BESSIE played by QUEEN LATIFAH LUCILLE played by TIKA SUMPTER Scene 11: Ma & Bessie Reunite After suffering a breakdown, Bessie has lost sight of who she is. Clarence helps find Ma Rainey and the two reunite. Ma helps Bessie get herself back together. Cast: BESSIE played by QUEEN LATIFAH MA RAINEY played by MO’NIQUE Scene 12: John Hammond Meets Bessie John Hammond a young music producer meets Bessie after a performance in a small nightclub. He asks Bessie to be a part of a concert celebrating the artists who have influenced the blues. He wants to produce a come back tour for Bessie. Cast: BESSIE played by QUEEN LATIFAH JOHN HAMMOND played by BRYAN GREENBERG RICHARD played by MIKE EPPS Scene 13: Bessie Remembers her Mother In this scene we see Bessie performing on her comeback tour to a standing ovation. As she closes her eyes she finally sees her mother’s face in her memory. BESSIE played by QUEEN LATIFAH YOUNG BESSIE played by KAMRYN JOHNSON .
