The Boston Red Sox Tuesday, March 30, 2021 * The Boston Globe At Fenway this year, players will abandon the suite life and get back in the clubhouse Alex Speier Anxiety engulfed the Red Sox in the wake of reliever Matt Barnes’s recent positive COVID-19 test, a reminder of the vulnerability within the shared space of a clubhouse during a pandemic. Ultimately, the unease proved temporary, as Barnes tested negative several times over the next 48 hours, resulting in his clearance (along with eight other players who’d been isolated as a result of contact tracing) to return to the team. Yet it served as a reminder of what baseball teams may confront in the year to come — and that the Red Sox have a very different clubhouse setup to contain the spread of the virus this year. A year ago, Red Sox players had the most luxurious accommodations in the history of Fenway Park. With a need to implement social distancing and other safety protocols, the Red Sox abandoned their clubhouse and got creative, relocating players and coaches to luxury suites. The suites, which housed two players each, proved effective in keeping the players safe, healthy, and comfortable. When players reported for the summer training period in July, they were dazzled by the setup. But the suites came with a drawback. Player interactions dwindled. Familiar rituals such as conversations over meals were lost. For coaches and front office staff, the dispersal made it difficult to locate players and thus to coach and help them. By contrast, on road trips, the team was together in visiting clubhouses large enough to maintain social distancing.

The Boston Red Sox Monday, April 15, 2019 * The Boston Globe David Price pitches seven shutout innings, leads Red Sox past Orioles Nora Princiotti When the Red Sox starting pitching struggled over the opening weeks of this season, that problem begat a second issue. Already going through 2019 without a traditional closer, the Boston bullpen found itself taxed less than a month in. That made David Price’s sparkler Sunday badly needed. Price (1-1, 3.79 ERA) went seven innings on an efficient 92 pitches, 64 of them for strikes. He gave up no runs and only three hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. More, he set things up nicely for Ryan Brasier to pitch the eighth and Matt Barnes to pitch the ninth in an economical 4-0 Red Sox win against the Orioles. “Everybody knew where we were pitching-wise today and for [Price] to go seven, give the ball to those last two guys, it was very important for us,” said manager Alex Cora. “Now tomorrow we kind of reset and we’re ready for the game tomorrow.” Baltimore starter John Means went five innings and gave up just one run but the Red Sox did the bulk of their scoring against Orioles relievers in the eighth inning when Xander Bogaerts hit a hanging slider off Josh Lucas to the batter’s eye for a three-run home run. “I was looking for off-speed the whole at-bat,” Bogaerts said. “After he threw me that first slider I thought [darn], I might be struck out right now because his first slider was nasty.

The Boston Red Sox Monday, April 24, 2017 * The Boston Globe Dustin Pedroia didn’t like the way things went down Nick Cafardo BALTIMORE — If the Red Sox were supposed to retaliate for Dustin Pedroia getting spiked on a Manny Machado slide Friday, Pedroia didn’t like the way things went down Sunday. Matt Barnes threw a pitch at Machado’s head in the eighth inning that sailed behind the Orioles third baseman and hit off his bat. Barnes was ejected immediately. Pedroia, who has not played since injuring his left leg on the slide, was then seen communicating with Machado from the dugout. He texted him later. “I just told him [Machado] I had nothing to do with that,” Pedroia said. “I just told him that’s not how you do that. I said sorry to him and his team. If you’re going to protect guys, you do it the right away. And he knows that and both teams know that, so it was definitely a mishandled situation. “There was zero chance that [Machado] was trying to hurt me. He just made a bad slide and he did hurt me. That’s just baseball, man. I’m not mad at him. I love Manny Machado. I love playing against him. I love watching him. If I slid into third base and got Manny’s knee, I’d know I’m going to get drilled. It’s baseball. I get drilled, I go to first base. That’s it,” Pedroia said. Pedroia was definitely standing up for what he perceived to be right.

The Boston Red Sox Monday, May 17, 2021 * The Boston Globe Shohei Ohtani’s two-run homer lifts Angels over Red Sox in series finale Julian McWilliams Matt Barnes has been virtually unhittable all year. Barnes came into Sunday’s contest against the Los Angeles Angels with a 1.89 ERA and 33 strikeouts in 19 innings. In converting all nine of his save opportunities, he’d held opponents to just one hit (1 for 29, .034), never mind a run. Yet with two outs in the ninth and the Sox leading by one, the Angels’ heavy hitters put a pause to Barnes’s run. Mike Trout reached first, on a bloop single to right, which kept the inning alive. Then Shohei Ohtani delivered a go-ahead homer to right that stayed fair just inside the Pesky Pole and ultimately denied the Red Sox a series sweep, 6-5, at Fenway. “I threw a fastball in to Ohtani he was ready for,” Barnes said. “I was trying to throw a fastball up and just kind of pulled it in. “I personally think he’s the most physically gifted baseball player I’ve ever seen,” Barnes continued. “He’s a special player. He’s incredibly talented. Hopefully he stays healthy and has a long career.” The context of how Barnes and the Sox got to that point is important. Manager Alex Cora said that he didn’t think reliever Adam Ottavino was sharp in the eighth inning. With one out, Jared Walsh singled and Taylor Ward walked. José Iglesias lined out to Hunter Renfroe in deep right field for the second out, but Walsh tagged up and went to third.
