    Hockey Commissioners Association Contact: Joe Bertagna, Hockey East, (781) 245-2122 [email protected] For Immediate Release: Friday, April 6, 2018 MINNESOTA DULUTH’S SCOTT PERUNOVICH IS 2018 TIM TAYLOR NATIONAL ROOKIE OF THE YEAR University of Minnesota Duluth freshman defense- man Scott Perunovich (Hibbing, MN) has been named the recipient of the 2018 Tim Taylor Award, bestowed annually upon the best first-year player in NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey, the Hockey Commissioners’ Asso- ciation announced today. He is only the second defen- seman to receive this honor in the 12-year history of the award. The award is voted on by the nation’s assistant coaches and is named for the former Yale University and U.S. Olympic Team head coach. Perunovich was 11-25-36 through 40 games for the Bulldogs, putting him fourth in NCAA freshman scoring and the only non-forward in the top eight. He is also eighth in scoring among all defensemen nationally. A strong two-way player, Perunovich is a major rea- son that Minnesota Duluth advanced to this year’s NCAA Frozen Four in St. Paul, MN. “We certainly knew he had the offensive ability and I’m not surprised that he is where he is,” said UMD coach Scott Sandelin. “He does surprise me with some of the plays he makes game in and game out. The big thing is defensively he’s been really good. Overall, it’s probably a little more than we expected as far as the kind of year, but I’m not surprised he’s done what he’s done.” “He’s a special player.

The nation's top 24 college hockey players were announced tonight at the NCAA Men's Division I Frozen Four in Boston, Massachusetts. Five schools enjoyed a pair of honorees each: Boston University, Denver, Michigan, Minnesota State and Yale. Noteworthy this year: • Five players had been recognized previously, including Miami University senior forward Austin Czarnik, who has been honored three times (twice on the Second Team and once on the First Team.) • There are 18 players from 11 different U.S. states and six Canadian players hailing from four different provinces. • The sources of the most players: Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota and Ontario, with three each. • 10 of the honorees are seniors. Of the other 14, nine are juniors, three are sophomores and two are freshmen. • The conference breakdown: six from Hockey East, five from ECAC Hockey, four each from the Big Ten, the NCHC and the WCHA, and one from Atlantic Hockey. • 16 players participated in the NCAA Tournament. He had two power play goals and scored the insurance goal in each game. His week was highlighted by a three-point night (2G, 1A) on Saturday in a 10-5 win against the Seattle Thunderbirds. On the season, McKenzie has nine points (7G, 2A) in six games, which is second on the Winterhawks. Jordy Stallard – Prince Albert Raiders (WHL) Stallard had a six-point night (1G, 5A) in a 6-1 win against the Medicine Hat Tigers on Saturday. All five of his assists were primary assists. He finished plus-three in two games last week. On the season, Stallard leads the Raiders in scoring with 11 points (3G, 8A) in six games. Mikhail Berdin – Sioux Falls Stampede (USHL) Berdin stopped 74 of 79 shots last week in his first two games of the season, going 1-1. He made 39 saves of 41 shots on Friday against the Fargo Force in a 5-2 win and turned away 35 of 38 shots in a 4-2 loss to the Waterloo Black Hawks on Saturday. He has a .937 save percentage to start the season.
