Marion County Honors History Guideline

9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade students will all meet minimum requirements for the Alabama Course of Study as well as the Alabama High School Graduation Exam. In addition to those requirements, they will complete the following minimum assignments.

WRITING for 9th and 10th grades

Expository Essay- to explain something in detail Students will-(1). Identify and narrow a topic; (2). Gather and organize evidence; (3). Write a first draft; (4). Revise and proof.

OR

Persuasive Essay- to discuss a topic that has different opinions. Students will use same format as above. An example might be “It is vital to vote in elections”

Students will prepare a project from a selected list. An example for 9th graders might be on a country with emphasis on its history, economy, geography and upon world events. For 10th graders an example might be on one of the American Presidents or on a state in the U.S.

Students will be given primary sources to read and analyze with a written assignment. Students should include (1). Who wrote the document; (2) What were the circumstances as well as when it was written; (3.) What was the purposes of this document and was it effective; (4). Is this speech a reliable source to study.

READING for 9th and 10th grades

Students will read a minimum of two books from a selected reading list and write an analysis of the book or given an oral review to the class.

WRITING for 11th and 12th grades---

Students will write a research paper from a list of selected topics. Some examples might be The Watergate Scandal; The Vietnam War; or The Civil Rights Movement.

Students will analyze and research a U.S. Supreme Court Case such as “Brown vs. Board of Education” with special emphasis on its impact on history.

Students will read and analyze a key document in history such as The Magna Carta or The Preamble to the U.S. Constitution.

Students will read and analyze various primary sources such as: George Washington’s address to the Continental Congress; Gerald Ford’s pardoning Nixon; or Martin Luther King, Jr. on the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Students will prepare a project on a U.S. president, or a U.S. state, or a various type of government using a visual aid.

12th grade students will identify the various aspects of stocks.

READING for 11th and 12th grades—

Students will read a minimum of two books from a selected reading list and write an analysis of the book or give an oral review to the class.
