COMMODORE'S COLUMN

Our sailing calendar this year has been significantly disrupted due to the weather conditions experienced on sailing days – usually gale force winds or a forecast that make holding the event dangerous. Every effort will be made to resail events where possible later in the season.

The Club was able to conduct the VX One Victorian State titles in late October. Twelve boats entered some coming from as far away as Lake Macquarie in NSW and a number from Canberra. It was won by Brian Case from Geelong Yacht Club. Four heats were held after being “blown out” on Saturday. Competitors commented favourably on the facilities available at our Club and the great sailing venue vowing to return. Many thanks to the thirteen volunteers each day who helped make this event a success.

2 On Sat 16 and Sun 17 November the Club hosted the Eastern Region Regatta which was postponed from earlier this year. Competitors from yacht clubs all around the participated. Results can be found elsewhere in Telltales.

The Club’s Storm Point race is being held on Saturday 23rd November. This is the longest race on our calendar and is Heat 2 of the Club Championship.

There are still some sailors who have not paid Club membership and sailing fees or have used up the 3 race allowance period. This is unacceptable. Skippers will face consequences including disqualification and withdrawal of Club benefits if this situation is not rectified immediately.

Our restaurant under the management of Rob and Julie Anne continues to trade well. To help plan food and staff requirements bookings would be appreciated.

Crab Night was postponed largely due to a shortage of live Spider Crabs. Consideration will be given to holding it later in the season. The Club was still well supported on the long weekend.

A Cup function was held which gained some support and was enjoyed by those who attended. It is hoped to be a bigger affair next year.

The Commodore’s Christmas drinks for members will be held on Sat 14 December from 4.306pm at a cost of $20 per head. Rob will provide an assortment of finger food. Bookings are preferred. I hope to see you there.

Kerrie and I will be taking a short break and visiting New Zealand in the next few weeks.

Yours in sailing

MYC ANNUAL REPORT 20019-20

A key initiative of the Club over the last 18 months has been to improve communications with members through electronic Telltales, more extensive email communications, information meetings, and the publication of General Committee meeting minutes.

To progress this further the General Committee has prepared the MYC Annual Report to Members which was emailed to members a few weeks ago.

This draws together all the reports presented at the AGM, membership and sailing statistics gathered throughout the year, the member register and the Club’s financial accounts into one document.

As well as ensuring members are better informed, it is intended as a handy reference and to ensure historical information is not lost.

If you missed the emailed copy, it is available in the Members Section of the website. The password for the Members Section will be emailed to members in the next few days.

There has been strong support from all clubs for this regatta as evidenced by the background preparations originating from our first general club meeting held at Lake Wellington Yacht Club on 30th June 2019 and our final volunteer's meeting on Thursday 14th November.

To the many volunteers I would say a grateful thank you for your skills, your advice and your efforts, as the outcome as voiced by many has been a very successful and fun regatta.

Saturday 16th was our invitation race with fine weather and winds up to 20 knots, gusting to 24 knots from South to South East. The OTB <125 mixed class started first at 14.05 hrs followed at 14.10 hrs by the keel boats/trailer sailer mixed class which was contested by nine boats.

-Congratulations to T. Duff in "Weasel Woo Hoo - Laser 4.7" winner and sole contestant of the OTB <125 - In the Keel Boats congratulations to winner D. Dyer in "Whatever - RL24Sk" followed by H. Howard in "Tarakona - Dragon" and F. Haes in "New Wave - Etchells"

Sunday was a better sailing day with fine sunny weather and winds from the same direction at 15 knots gusting to 20 knots. This enabled the running of two heats, challenging for the Eastern Region Regatta Trophy which was contested by four classes. CLICK HERE for results

The Eastern Region Interclub Regatta Perpetual Trophy is awarded to the club with the lowest score based on the two best boats in any division. In the event of a tie, the next best boat results from the tied clubs in the same divisions will be used to break the tie. CLICK HERE for Perpetual Trophy Results

In conclusion we would congratulate GLYC as the winners of the Eastern Region Regatta and especially their junior sailors who were a highlight of our regatta.

There are many people to thank, especially our Race Officer Jacqui Crawford supported by John Mayman and to Gai Clough for her documentation on how to run a regatta. Our support boat crews on Metung 2, Kepper and JC Bull, our photographer Julianne and our restaurant staff led by Rob McPherson and finally our Commodore Peter Harvey who after many sleepless nights is taking a few weeks off. 6 Ken Barlow Vice Commodore

On 27th October we did get out sailing! Yay! We had kids out in the Pacer, Opti’s and Cadets, plus a big kid: Coach Eagle, and Rusty got to go sailing too. The kids sailed really well and it was great to see they remembered how to do it! Thanks Marty Bryan for helping us out ferrying kids out to the VX1’s. Maddy Hack & Charlie Edwards & Sabrina Murphy all got to have a sail on a VX1 after they had finished their regatta, some of the kids got to have a go on the tiller! They all absolutely loved this opportunity, thanks Jeff Rose for organising!

Stay tuned for a special Movie Night that is being planned – a fundraiser for Junior Squad – so we hope you can come along – and bring your family & friends!

Soon we will be organising our Christmas Break-up too – usually a Sail to Nungurner jetty, with BBQ lunch at the foreshore reserve (families welcome to join us), then sail back.
