Office of Diné Science, Math, and Technology (ODSMT): 1. The historic approval of the Diné School Accountability Plan (DSAP) in September 2016 has given “the green light” to the Department of Diné Education to begin implementing the academic contents and achievement standards to 60 BIE schools across the Navajo Nation that will be consolidated into one accountability system. Future phases of DSAP will integrate Navajo language and culture into the Navajo school accountability system. 2. DODE Administration and staff are convening planning meetings with stakeholders to implement Phase I of DSAP. A DODE team has been established to provide outreach to schools by sponsoring monthly updates, workshops, and technical assistance for schools reservation- wide, meeting with school leadership, and providing individual trainings at the school level. A Teacher Institute was sponsored by ODSMT and was attended by 75 teachers from 17 different schools. Teachers developed 13 models for school improvement for Phase I of DSAP. One model will be chosen at the next Teacher Institute and available for implementation. 3. DODE assigned staff are drafting amendments to Title 10 designed to improve accountability, transparency, and oversight of tribally-controlled schools under the authority and sanctions of the Navajo Nation.

Todacheene After we get back to our country it will brighten up again and the Navajos will be as happy as the land, black clouds will rise and there will be plenty of rain. –Barboncito, 1868 Introduction Traditional Navajos believe the Diné Bahane’1 or the “Navajo creation story” and journey narrative was given to the Navajo people by the Holy Beings. Changing Woman is the Holy Being that created the four original clans of the Navajo and saved humans from the monsters that were destroying the earth. The Navajo tribe is matrilineal because Changing Woman created the clan system in the creation story.

Contact: Erny Zah Director of Communications Cell: (928) 380-0771 [email protected] For Immediate Release Sept. 30, 2012 Navajo President Shelly to Congress: Do Your Job WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. — Speaking out against a potential federal government shutdown, Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly expressed his dismay that Congress is failing to honor its trust responsibility to Native American tribes. "It is unconscionable that the federal government will come to a complete halt due to a few unreasonable members of Congress. They have one primary role, to fund the government, and they need to do their job. By failing to provide funding, Congress is once again failing to honor its trust responsibility to America’s first people,” President Shelly said. The Navajo people will see an immediate impact in their communities. Hospitals, law enforcement and social services will remain operational. Social Security benefits (both Supplemental Security Income and Social Security Disability Insurance) will continue to be disbursed uninterrupted. Other programs such as tribal colleges, some Indian Health Service units, and Head Start are not forward funded and will operate only if funds are currently available. There is no guarantee of federal reimbursement if tribes choose to self- fund. "Much like sequester, once again Congress is placing ideology before the basic needs of American people," added President Shelly. President Shelly also reiterated the Navajo Nation's need for fiscal restraint in uncertain economic environments. "The Navajo Nation Council has repeatedly attempted to use up our reserves. I have sought to ensure that we have sufficient dollars to weather these types of crises through veto of budget line items.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 19, 2021 President Nez and Vice President Lizer deliver the State of the Navajo Nation Address PHOTO: Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez and Vice President Myron Lizer deliver the State of the Navajo Nation Address from the Office of the President and Vice President in Window Rock, Ariz. on April 19, 2021. WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez and Vice President Myron Lizer presented the State of the Navajo Nation Address virtually to the 24th Navajo Nation Council on Monday, during the opening day of the Spring Council Session. At the start of the address, President Nez took time to honor and remember former Council Delegate Nelson S. BeGaye who passed away on April 15 at the age 69, following a long battle with cancer, and former Navajo Nation President Albert Hale who passed away on February 2 due to complications from COVID-19. He then turned his focus to the Navajo Nation’s fight against COVID-19 and the variants. “On March 30th, we announced the first confirmed case of the B.1.1.7 variant, also known as the U.K. variant, which was identified in the western portion of our Nation. One week later, the B.1.429 variant known as the California variant was identified in the Chinle Service Unit, and most recently, in the Gallup Service Unit and Shiprock Service Unit. Despite these new challenges, our Navajo people have managed to keep our numbers of new COVID-19 infections relatively low. This is in large part due to the commitment of our health care workers who have worked non-stop to administer the COVID-19 vaccines since December,” said President Nez.

The first was the con- tainment of Arizona’s largest fire in the history of the state, recently burn- ing in the White Mountains of the Bear Wallow Wilderness. The blaze eventually dipped into part of western New Mexico—scorching over 538,000 acres total, destroying seventy-two buildings, and at one point causing the evacuation of 10,000 people.1 Started on May 29 by an aban- doned campfire, the conflagration eventually required 1,700 firefighters to suppress the blaze, burning 841 square miles of rugged territory, pri- marily in eastern Arizona. By July 3, 95 percent of the fire was contained, with mop-up crews extinguishing remnants in isolated pockets.
