1. Camera Settings and procedures

1 Camera Resolution: HDV or DV

Camera Resolution 1 High Definition(HD) VS Standard Definition(SD) Capture High Definition: The resolution for HD is 1920(W) x 1080(H) Pixels with a of 59.94 Standard Definition(NTSC): The resolution for SD is 720(W) x 480(H) Pixels with a frame rate of 29.97 Switch from HD to SD (or vice versa): You can change this by selecting the Menu Button, select IN/ OUT REC, then select REC FORMAT

Exposure Control 2 4 5 ND Filter, Iris, & Gain These settings are really up to your discretion, as your content may diff er in brightness from our test media. ND Filter: Neutral Density Filter, has three settings: OFF, 1/4 ND, & 1/16 ND The higher the setting the darker your exposure will be IRIS: same as F-Stop or Aperture, it is best to leave this on to Manual Iris control and fi nd a setting that works for your fi lm GAIN: similar to ISO, The higher you set the Gain will give you more exposure but it will increase Image Noise.

Configure Capturemate & Select signal input From Capturemate’s MENU, select PREFERENCES and choose the BLACKMAGIC INTENSITY SHUTTLE.

The Device Setting should match your camera setting.

Make sure that Capturemate follows these settings as shown otherwise your transfer will not work correctly. MC1410 16mm SD / HD Telecine Guide Page 3 of 4 Load 1. Turn knob to STOP Position and pull out enough leader to thread through the unit. Insert fi lm as shown below:

Turn on the motor, advance the fi lm to the fi rst exposed frame then stop and adjust the image. Adjusting the Image Rack the Zoom, Focus, and Aperture on the camera to adjust for your desired exposure. If your fi lm is too bright even with the aperture closed down, utilizing the ND fi lters will allow you to control brightness. If the Sony V1U is having diffi culty focusing the projection, adjust for focus on the Projector lens. If you have a roll with varying exposures, you may either run the fi lm through at multiple f-stop settings or use Auto Exposure by pressing the EXPOSURE/IRIS button (located next to the zoom ring). The f-stop display will disappear from the viewfi nder letting you know it is automatically adjusting exposue. Auto Exposure is suggested as it will save you a considerable amount of time. Press the Exposure/Iris button again to resume manual exposure. Now that the camera is adjusted to your 16mm source, we are ready to capture. Rewind your fi lm to the leader or to your fi rst exposed frame, then turn the knob to PROJECT on the 16mm Projector. Start Capture Capture mate Return to Capturemate and press Start Capture. Name and save your project onto your harddrive or storage media, once you select save, the Capture Window will open. Flip the SYNC switch on the projector. Flip the MOTOR Switch and the transfer will begin. Hit ESC to end the capture. Turn off the Sync Switch, the attached mouse will not work properly otherwise. Run your fi lm through to the end of the reel then rewind. MC1410 16mm SD / HD Telecine Guide Page 4 of 4 file conversion to Apple prores Capture Mate records to an uncompressed 8bit RGB fi le that is typically excessively large and diffi cult to work with in an NLE. We fi nd it best to transcode the fi le to a Apple ProRes 422 (alternatively your favorite codec of choice) with MPEG STREAMCLIP. First open MPEG Streamclip, then import the uncompressed Quicktime(.mov) fi le generated by Capturemate. To transcode it, go to the File Menu and select Export to Quicktime... It is important to note that the fi eld dominance diff ers between HD and SD. 180˚ and Flip is not always always necessary depending on your workfl ow, but is good practice. Our tests have shown signifi cant diff erences between the way footage is handled in X and Premiere Pro. Select Make Movie to begin your transcode. When done: Turn off the Camera, , Projectors, and Room Lights.
