He starred in basketball in high school, junior college and college. Hefner was a two-time all-league guard at both Alhambra (Calif.) High and Santa Ana (Calif.) Junior College, where Boyd was the head coach. He then earned Little All-America honors in 1963 and 1964 at Cal Western (now USIU). Hefner coached the frosh teams at Cal Western and Seattle University for one year each.
