Joe: It's been quite a while now. I was raised at Peerless Lake, around the Trout Lake area. Ernest: Is that where you came from? Joe: That's where we're originally from, but we've been here for 32 years at Little Buffalo. Ernest: But before that, that's where you came from? Joe: Yes. Ernest: But before you came here, you were at Trout Lake? Joe: Before I arrived here? I went to Ft. Vermilion, I stopped at Peace River. I travelled along from there, and this is where I settled, I never went back to Trout Lake. I stayed here at Little Buffalo after I came from Peace River. That's where I got thrown out of treaty. Ernest: At Ft. Vermilion? Joe: Yes. Ernest: You were there for sixteen years? Joe: Yes, I was there for a long time. Ernest: What happened when you got thrown out of treaty? Did you miss any treaty payments? Joe: No, we're not the only ones who got eliminated; there were some other people from Trout Lake too, in fact, people from all around here. -

Brief Explanation of the South Saskatchewan River Basin Legal and Inter- jurisdictional Institutional Water Map Charts. This document provides a brief explanation of the legal and inter-jurisdictional water institutional map charts in the South Saskatchewan River Basin (SSRB). This work has been derived from Hurlbert, Margot. 2006. Water Law in the South Saskatchewan River Basin. IACC Project working paper No. 27. The main purpose of the charts is to provide a visual representation of the relevant water legal and inter-jurisdictional institutions involved in the management, decision-making process and monitoring/enforcement of water resources (quality and quantity) in Saskatchewan and Alberta, at the federal, inter-jurisdictional, provincial and local levels. The charts do not intend to provide an extensive representation of all water legal and/or inter-jurisdictional institutions, nor a comprehensive list of roles and responsibilities. Rather to serve as visual tools that allow the observer to obtain a relatively prompt working understanding of the current water legal and inter-jurisdictional institutional structure existing in each province. Following are the main components of the charts: 1. The charts provide information regarding water quantity and water quality. To facilitate a prompt reading between water quality and water quantity the charts have been colour coded. Water quantity has been depicted in red (i.e., text, boxes, link lines and arrows), and contains only one subdivision, water allocation. -
Hay River Region
The Hay Water RiverMonitoring Activities in the Hay River Region Kátåo’dehé at Enterprise Kátåo’dehé is the South Slavey Dene name for the Hay River. In Chipewyan, the Hay River is Hátå’oresche. In Cree, it is Maskosï-Sïpiy. The Hay River is a culturally significant river for Northerners and an integral part of the Mackenzie River Basin. Given its importance, there are several monitoring initiatives in the region designed to better understand the river and to detect changes. The information collected through these programs can also help to address questions that people may have. While amounts vary from year to year, the volume of water in the Hay River has remained relatively stable since monitoring began in 1963. Only a slight increasing trend in winter flow was revealed. Some changes in water quality were also found, such as increasing trends in phosphorus and decreasing trends in calcium, magnesium and sulphate. This means that the levels of these substances have changed since sampling began in 1988. Further work is needed to understand the ecological significance of these trends. Overall, the water quality and quantity of the Hay River is good. Continued monitoring activities will increase our knowledge of this important river and identify change. To the Honourable The Minister of the Interior Sir,—I respectfully submit the following report of my operations for the season of 1891. On the 5th of June of that year instructions were issued to me from the Surveyor- General's Office directing me to make a thorough exploration of the region drained by the Peace River and its tributaries, between the boundary of British Columbia and the Rocky Mountains, and to collect any information that may be of value relating to that region. The nature and extent of my work was, of necessity, left largely to myself, as also was the method of my surveys. As it was desirable that I should, if practicable, connect the end of my micrometer survey of the Mackenzie River made in 1888 with that made on the Great Slave River in the same year, which I was then unable to accomplish on account of high water, I took along the necessary instruments, but owing to circum- stances which will be detailed further on I found it impossible to complete this work. Immediately upon intimation that this work was to be intrusted to me I ordered a suitable canoe from the Ontario Canoe Company, Peterborough, after having ascertained that I could obtain it more quickly there than elsewhere. -

Mighty Peace Watershed Alliance – State of Drinking Water Page 1 1 Introduction 1.1 Peace River Watershed The Peace River originates in the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia and flows northeast across northern Alberta, joining with the Athabasca River to form the Slave River below Peace Point (see Figure 1). The Slave River is a tributary of the Mackenzie River. Figure 1: Peace River Watershed Historically, the Peace River originated at the confluence of the Finlay and Parsnip Rivers in northeastern British Columbia. However, since the construction of the W.A.C. Bennett Dam in 1968 and the Peace Canyon Dam in 1980 by BC Hydro, the Peace River headwaters are now Williston Lake, located approximately 170 kilometers (km) upstream from the BC/Alberta border. With the construction of the WAC Bennett Dam, the Peace River flows have been modified with spring and summer flows detained and more water released during the winter. ©2012 Aquality Environmental Consulting Ltd. Mighty Peace Watershed Alliance – State of Drinking Water Page 2 Within Alberta, the Peace River Watershed includes several important tributaries representing six sub- basins: the Upper Peace, Smoky River (including the Little Smoky and Wapiti Rivers), the Central Peace, the Wabasca River, the Lower Peace and the Slave River, as shown in Figure 2. Technically, the Slave River is part of the Great Slave River basin, however it has been included by Alberta Environment and Water (AEW) in the Peace River Watershed Planning Advisory Council (WPAC). -

The overall goal ofthe AES is to preserve and enhance the integrity, health, biodiversity and productivity ofour Arctic ecosystems for the benefit ofpresent and future generations. Four specific programs address some ofthe key environmental challenges: they are waste cleanup, contaminants, water management, and environment and economy integration. The programs are managed by the Northern Affairs Program ofthe Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development (DIAND); however, there is a strong emphasis on partnerships with northern stakeholders including Native organizations, other federal departments and the territorial governments. The AES Action on Water Program specifically strives to enhance the protection ofnorthern freshwaters through improved knowledge and decision-making. Water Resources managers in the Yukon and the Northwest Territories administer this Program which focuses on freshwater aquatic ecosystems. This report is the first detailed compilation ofstudies.conducted under the AES Action on Water Program. It covers work done from 1991 to 1994. Many studies have been concluded, while others are ongoing. Although data may not be available for all studies, or results are preliminary at this time, this report presents detailed background, objectives and methodology. -

State of the Knowledge of the Slave River and Slave River Delta A Component of the Vulnerability Assessment of the Slave River and Delta Final Report: April 2016 Prepared for the Slave River and Delta Partnership Jennifer Dagg The Pembina Institute With input and updates by: Executive summary The Slave River and Slave River Delta are unique ecosystems and important to the livelihood and culture of the Aboriginal people in the area. This report consolidates a large number of reports and articles referring to the Slave River and Delta to assess the state of the knowledge and identify areas for future research. This report is intended to be a living document, and periodically updated as more research and monitoring, from multiple knowledge perspectives, takes place1. Overall, we found a large volume of information on hydrology and sediment load, water quality, metals and contaminants in water, sediments and fish, and muskrats, though some of this information is dated. There was a moderate volume of information about fish community, moose, beaver and vegetation, though some of this information is dated and there are some knowledge gaps. There is little information available on benthic invertebrates and insects, mink, otter and aquatic birds, and air quality, and there are a number of knowledge gaps in understanding of function and dynamics of these ecosystem components. Jun Xu Received: 7 March 2017; Accepted: 26 April 2017; Published: 2 May 2017 Abstract: Currently, no river ice models are available that are free and open source software (FOSS), which can be a hindrance to advancement in the field of modelling river ice processes. This paper introduces a non-proprietary (conditional), open-source option to the scientific and engineering community, the River Ice Model (RIVICE). RIVICE is a one-dimensional, fully-dynamic wave model that mimics key river ice processes such as ice generation, ice transport, ice cover progression (shoving, submergence and juxtapositioning) and ice jam formation, details of which are highlighted in the text. Three ice jam events at Fort McMurray, Alberta, along the Athabasca River, are used as case studies to illustrate the steps of model setup, model calibration and results interpretation. A local sensitivity analysis reveals the varying effects of parameter and boundary conditions on backwater flood levels as a function of the location of ice jam lodgment along the river reach and the location along the ice jam cover. Some limitations of the model and suggestions for future research and model development conclude the paper. Keywords: Athabasca River; Fort McMurray; ice jam flooding; river ice modelling; RIVICE 1.
