Based on newly discovered objects, this lecture explores the connections of early Vienna porcelain with the tastes of its noble patrons at a time when the city was absorbing a Baroque international style and developing its distinctive character in a uniquely playful manner. Dr. Claudia Lehner-Jobst will explore the artistic and social vibrancy of the imperial city around 1718 through the eyes of the modellers and painters of Du Paquier, who created works for the elite—confident members of the cultural avant-garde—as well as fulfilling imperial orders of diplomatic gifts which charmed the tastes of their recipients. 10:45 - 11:30 am Porcelaine à la mode: The Eighteenth-Century Collections of the Baden Princesses Sebastian Kuhn, Bonhams, London The ruling family of Baden in southwestern Germany boasted three notable porcelain collectors in the eighteenth century: the Margravines Sibylla Augusta of Baden-Baden (1675-1733), Magdalena Wilhelmine of Baden-Durlach (1677-1742), and Karoline Luise of Baden-Durlach (1723-83). Whereas the first two collections were displayed in a Northern European Baroque manner, Karoline Luise—who inherited the collections of her forebears—perceived porcelain through the lens of the Enlightenment and had a more scientific approach to collecting. -

Between 2000 and 2010, the population of Douglas County—home of Omaha—increased 11.5 percent, while neighboring Sarpy County grew 29.6 percent. Nebraska’s population is becoming more racially and ethnically diverse. The most significant growth has occurred in the Latino population, which is now the state’s largest minority group. From 2000 to 2010, the state’s Latino population increased from 5.5 percent to 9.2 percent, growing at a rate of slightly more than 77 percent. The black population also grew from 3.9 percent to 4.4 percent during that time. While Nebraska’s median age increased from 35.3 in 2000, to 36.2 in 2010 — the number of Nebraskans age 65 and older decreased slightly during the same time period, from 13.6 percent in 2000, to 13.5 percent in 2010. RECREATION AND PLACES OF INTEREST31 National Areas32 Nebraska has two national forest areas with hand-planted trees: the Bessey Ranger District of the Nebraska National Forest in Blaine and Thomas counties, and the Samuel R. McKelvie National Forest in Cherry County. The Pine Ridge Ranger District of the Nebraska National Forest in Dawes and Sioux counties contains native ponderosa pine trees. The U.S. Forest Service also administers the Oglala National Grassland in northwest Nebraska. Within it is Toadstool Geologic Park, a moonscape of eroded badlands containing fossil trackways that are 30 million years old. The Hudson-Meng Bison Bonebed, an archaeological site containing the remains of more than 600 pre- historic bison, also is located within the grassland. -

Batitto, Public Relations Manager, Newark Museum Phone: 973-596-6638, e-mail: [email protected] Newark Museum Exhibition Celebrates Sparkling Gift of Steuben Glass Unexpected Color: A Journey Through Glass Opens May 1, 2019 Newark, NJ – A sparkling, colorful gift of Steuben glass from The Thomas N. Armstrong III Collection will be on display in an upcoming exhibition at the Newark Museum. Unexpected Color: A Journey Through Glass, opening on May 1, 2019, showcases more than 130 works in glass designed by Frederick Carder for the famed Steuben Glass Works from 1903 to 1933 and used in a variety of settings by the collector. The exhibition presents a jewel box of shimmering glass, organized by Carder’s colors that he created and patented. Carder was fascinated with ancient glass colors and forms, and he worked to recreate the iridescent colors of excavated ancient Greek and Roman glass. He also designed new shapes inspired by Chinese and Venetian glass as well as shapes influenced by Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles, modern at the time. Carder kept detailed notebooks of his color formulas and glass types, revealing the glassblowing chemistry and techniques used to create the variety of functional and decorative glassware in the exhibition, including vases, bowls, candlesticks and stemware. The exhibition will include interactive tablets to connect Carder’s formulas and shapes with the colors and forms on display. Audio recordings of Carder interviews will also heighten the story of the experimentation behind the creation of this colorful glass. “Carder’s work for Steuben is particularly appropriate for Newark’s collection,” said Amy Simon Hopwood, the Museum’s Associate Curator of Decorative Arts. -

1 Empress Place Singapore 179555 www.acm.org.sg MEDIA INVITATION OVER 300 OBJECTS ON DISPLAY IN ASIAN CIVILISATIONS MUSEUM’S NEW GALLERY OF CHINESE CERAMICS Dear Editor, Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) specially invites you to go on a Director’s Tour of its new gallery of Chinese Ceramics. 2. The gallery presents a wide range of Chinese ceramics, from earthenware made for ritual burial in tombs to the finest porcelains from the Imperial kilns. The display spans 333 sq m, an area that includes Level 3 of the museum’s new Kwek Hong Png Wing. Interpretive materials explore how ceramics were made, used, and valued throughout Chinese history. 3. Key highlights include (i) The display of the lustrous white porcelain, including lively and delightfully modelled figures, produced at the Dehua kilns in Fujian province. The ACM’s large collection of Dehua porcelain is one of the finest and most comprehensive in the world. (ii) A selection of exquisite Song dynasty ceramics from the Edmond Chin collection, including extremely rare examples of Guan (official) kiln ware. The five classic wares of the Song dynasty – Ding, Jun, Ru, Guan, and Ge – have been prized by emperors, scholars, and collectors since their inception. (iii) Vase with a chrysanthemum base – This vase is an artistic tour-de- force, with the solid body of the vessel contrasting with the apparently fragile flower underneath. It reflects a blend of native Han and Central Asian taste – another example is from 12th-century Hebei under the Liao dynasty. (iv) Flute – Porcelain flutes were rare and luxurious versions of musical instruments normally carved from bamboo. -
