Lookin At Lucky

Lookin At Lucky was a remarkable juvenile as he became the first horse in North America in 22 years to win three Grade 1 races at 2 years, despite being a May 27 foal. He then became the first American colt in 31 years to be an Eclipse Champion at both 2 & 3 years. His pedigree is also of the highest quality, as he is one of the very best sons of (sire of ) and is bred on a similar Mr. Prospector/ cross to Distorted Humor. He is now transferring his talent to the role of stallion, with his son gaining five Gr.1 successes, including the 2018 Breeders’ Cup Classic, and another son, taking the 2019 . Lookin At Lucky is one of several sons of Smart Strike with Gr.1 winners to their credit, with Curlin, English Channel and Square Eddie among the others.

Smart Strike had eight stakes winners, headed by the outstanding Curlin and the smart Tenpins, from daughters of DEPUTY MINISTER. Remarkably, four of his sons – Lookin At Lucky, Curlin, English Channel and Square Eddie - already have Gr.1 winners from this line. Lookin At Lucky’s top son Accelerate has a dam by AWESOME AGAIN and he also has two talented performers out of DEPUTY MINISTER mares.

Judging by the record of the similarly-bred Distorted Humor, Lookin At Lucky should do well with mares from the line. Two of Distorted Humor’s best sons, and Any Given Saturday, are out of grand-daughters of SEATTLE SLEW, the latter being one of eight GSWs he has sired from mares by A.P. INDY. Distorted Humor’s Belmont S. winner Drosselmeyer has a second dam by SLEW O’GOLD. Lookin At Lucky has made a good start with this line, siring the Gr.2 winner Madefromlucky and the Gr.3 winner Lookin For Eight from daughters of PULPIT and MINESHAFT. He also sired the Gr.1- placed One Lucky Dane from a mare by BOSTON HARBOR.

Distorted Humor’s record suggests that Lookin At Lucky will be well suited by daughters and grand- daughters of SADLER’S WELLS. Distorted Humor’s foals out of Sadler’s Wells mares feature three Gr.1 winners. Distorted Humor’s Travers Stakes winner Flower Alley has a second dam by Sadler’s Wells and another of his Gr.1 winners, Bit of Whimsy, is out of a mare by Sadler’s Wells son EL PRADO. Smart Strike has also enjoyed Gr.1 success with Sadler’s Wells and English Channel has five Graded winners, headed by two Gr.1 winners, from this line.

Lookin At Lucky owes his Kentucky Derby winner Country House to a grand-daughter of DANZIG, by WAR CHANT. Smart Strike has Graded winners out of daughters of seven different sons of Danzig.

Smart Strike sired the Breeders’ Cup Turf winner English Channel from a grand-daughter of NUREYEV. Lookin At Lucky’s Gr.2 winner Dr Dorr is out of a grand-daughter of NUREYEV, by UNUSUAL HEAT, and Curlin sired the Gr.1 winner Palace Malice from a NUREYEV line mare.

Smart Strike had four Graded winners out of mares, including a Gr.1 winner, and Curlin has Graded winners with dams by Storm Cat and Gr.3 winners with dams by GIANT’S CAUSEWAY, HENNESSY and STORMY ATLANTIC. Lookin At Lucky definitely works with the STORM CAT line too as his first Graded winner, Lucky Player, had a dam by STORM CAT, and he now has 23% black-type winners with STORM CAT mares, he also sired the Gr.1 winner Wow Cat from a CAT THIEF mare and he has Gr.1 winners in Chile out of daughters of . Mares by GIANT’S CAUSEWAY are also likely to suit Lookin At Lucky, as this partnership has already produced the Gr.1-placed Maybellene. Lookin At Lucky’s smart son Giuseppe The Great has a dam by FORESTRY.

Lookin At Lucky is a grandson of MR PROSPECTOR but that doesn’t rule him out for mares from this line. Indeed his Gr.2 winner Madefromlucky is out of a mare inbred to MR PROSPECTOR. One of his Gr.2 winners has a dam by UNBRIDLED’S SONG and another has a second dam by UNBRIDLED. Lookin At Lucky’s Gr.3 winner Diamond Oops has a dam by MR GREELEY’s son WHYWHYWHY while his Gr.1 winners in Chile have dams by FUSAICHI PEGASUS, HUSSONET and SEEKER’S REWARD (by GONE WEST).
