RSY Foundation Award for Distinguished Service

At the Annual General Meeting on Thursday 19 November 2015, David Hepworth received the RSY Foundation Award for his dedicated service to the Club. David joined the Club in 1961 and has made a significant contribution to Club life. He served on the General Committee, Captain’s Committee, plus the House, EDP, Building Project, Marketing, Finance and Clubhouse & Grounds Sub-committees. He has represented the Club in Tennis Victoria pennant and played in the Club Championships for many years. His achievements include winning two championship perpetual trophies, the Vern White Memorial Trophy (Men’s Veteran Doubles) five times and the Peter Wharton Trophy (Men’s Senior Doubles) three times. Four of the ten teams entered in the 2015 spring competition reached the finals of the BDNTA competition with one team winning a premiership title. In the Monday night competition the Ladies’ Section 2 ‘Diamonds’ team won the grand final against Willison Park. The team consisted of Fiona Ralph, Sally Charles, Zoe Browning, Sophie Richards, Fiona Murdoch and Kitty Park. The Men’s Section 2 RSY ‘Volleys’ team, captained by Richard Sophie Richards, Fiona Ralph, Fiona Murdoch Ollerenshaw and the Women’s Section & Kitty Park 1 RSY ‘Top Shots’ team, captained by Sarah Robinson finished runners-up. In the Tuesday night competition the Men’s Section 2 RSY ‘Yarras’ team captained by James Everitt finished runners-up.

8 Junior Open Day The Junior Open Day, held on 6 March included matches for the young Hot Shots players, as well as junior members up to 16 years of age. With numerous matches, games and activities, the day provides a great opportunity for members and in particular new members of the Club, to experience what Club membership offers, particularly the tennis aspect of the Club. On this day we award the Stan Churchus Trophy. The challenge was held at Kooyong and RSY were victorious, retaining the trophy. This event is open to teenage members and the tennis tournament is followed by a relaxed barbeque.

9 Club Championships The Club Championships were conducted over two weekends in February, with two hundred and seventy players competing in thirty-eight events. This year the weather was fantastic. We had many marathon matches lasting over a number of hours, which was great tennis for the spectators that gathered on the Members Balcony. Umpires and lines people were organised for the Open Singles, Doubles, Mixed and 18/U Boys and Girls Singles. On the final day spectators experienced some brilliant tennis played on Court 1 in the Men’s and Ladies’ Open Singles final. Yuri Mijic won his third title and Louise Field won her second title, with both demonstrating tremendous ability and skill in the two entertaining finals. Marie Monterosso and Loretta Sheales won their third Ladies Open Doubles title. Alexandros Yiappos and Yuri Mijic won the Men’s Open Doubles, for the third consecutive year. Peter Johnston and Louise Field won the Open Mixed Doubles. Cassandra Moraleja won back to back titles in the 18/U Girls Drew Fenton & Yuri Mijic Singles and Campbell Salmon won the 18/U Boys Singles. After play, members and guests gathered in the Como Room for presentations and viewed a very impressive video of players and matches taken throughout the Championships. The President, Drew Fenton, Club Captain, Lachlan Beer and Chairman of the Junior Committee, Hugh Mosley presented the perpetual trophies and prizes to the winners and runners-up of each event. Also, on the last weekend of the Club Championships, the Member’s Friday Night drinks were held on the Balcony. This area provided great viewing for the members who watched the very Louise Field & Peter Johnston Laura Dean competitive match played by Rob Tucker and James Freeman. Complimentary snacks were served and many members continued on for dinner in the Courtyard Bistro. Once again, the championships were a great success and the Sports Director Jarrad Wright, Hospitality Director James Fien, Curator Bill Turner and their teams are to be congratulated on the organisation of this major event of the year.
