Korea-CERN Theory Collaboration

Deog-Ki Hong (Pusan Nat’l U. ) CKC meeting (April 25, 2009) I. Introduction : Motivation and Development • Why we need -CERN Theory collaboration (KCTC)? 1. As LHC is operating, CERN becomes the world center of particle , which Korea should join as well. 2. Two exp. programs (CMS and ALICE) are running in CERN- Korea program. For its success theory program should be running as envisioned in 2006 agreement. 3. CERN theory group has excellent science programs for young scientists, by which Korean particle theory community can train young students or postdoc as Japan or Israel are doing for the leaders of next generation. II. Status of High Energy Theory in Korea • Leading figures: (Late) Benjamin W. Lee, M. Y. Han, Jihn E. Kim, Mannque Rho, Soo-Jong Rey, Kiwoon Choi to name a few. • LHC is a discovery machine, which might be able to prove the theories that Korean high energy theory community helped/ helps to develop. • Size of Korean high energy theory community: 1. Number of members in particle physics division of KPS: 143 2. Number of faculty members (majoring in particle theory) in parti- cle physics division of KPS: 70 (postdocs not included) 3. Number of major institutes which have particle theory faculties more than three: 12 (KIAS, Seoul, Gunsan, Sejong, Jeonbug, Ewha, Yonsei, Hanyang, Sogang, Pusan, Konkuk, Kyunghee) 4. Number of (particle theory) graduate students and postdocs in ma- jor institutes: 60+50 • National Centers and Institutes of High Energy Theory in Korea 1. Korea Institute for Advanced Study (6 faculties and 15 posdocs in HET) 2. Center for Quantum Spacetime (1 center faculty and 10 postdocs in HET) 3. Asian-Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics, located in Pohang, Korea is helping HET through many programs.

• Major HEP conferences hosted recently in Korea 1. SUSY08 (Seoul 2008) 2. LP07 (Daegu 2007) 3. Baryon07 (Seoul 2007) 4. PASCOS (Gyeonju 2004) 5. Strings 201? (Seoul 201?) III. Activities of Korea-CERN Theory Collab. 2009 • We are funded by MEST to send two CERN fellows this year. (Total budget =250M Won ≈ 213,000 CHF)

• We have three particle physics workshops this year: 1. Busan Particle Physics workshop (02/26-28), 2. 18th miniworkshop on Particle Physics and Cosmology (05/14 - 16), 3. Busan Particle Physics workshop (December, 2009)

• We plan to participate CERN TH Institute. Developments • Oct. 20th, 2006 – At 2006 KPS fall meeting (particle division congress) a committee is formed to join the Korea-CERN collaboration.

• Dec. 8 and 9, 2006 – The committee has organized a workshop at Busan to discuss the possible KCT collaboration, where about 40 particle theorists got together. – At the workshop Korea particle theory community formed a plan- ning committee for KCTC. – The committee produced a report and submitted to the chair of particle physics division of KPS (Prof. D. C. Son). Planning Committee for Korea-CERN collaboration

• Chair: D. K. Hong (Busan)

• Secretary: C. H. Lee (Busan)

• Steering committee: B. H. Lee (CQUeST, Sogang), S. K. Oh (Kunkook), J. B. Choi (Jeonbug)

• Team Leaders:

Division Team Leaders Phenomenology, Astropart., Cosmo P. Ko , S. Y. Choi, H. B. Kim String Theory S. Nam , S. Hyun Heavy ion, Extreme QCD, Lattice S. H. Lee , S. Kim • August 9, 2007 – The planning committee had an audio conferencing with the team leaders of CMS and ALICE group of Korea-CERN collaboration and produced a proposal for KCTC. – The planning committee submitted the KCTC proposal to MOST. • Oct. 18, 2007 – The planning committee gave a presentation at KPS meeting at Jeju. • Oct. 22, 2007 – The planning committee made a presentation at CERN-Korea committee meeting at CERN. • Dec. 13 and 15, 2007 – The committee has organized a workshop at Busan to discuss the KCT collaboration, where about 40 particle theorists got together. • August 8, 2008 – KCT planning committee and CERN TH had produced an agree- ment on the KCTC programs: – Korean-CERN fellows – Participation of CERN TH institute program – Sending Graduate students to CERN • Sept 29, 2008 – Received a letter from Prof. Luis Alvarez-Gaume, the head of CERN TH, regarding the terms on Koran-CERN fellow • October, 2008 – KCTC planning committee submitted a finial proposal to MEST. • April 14, 2009 – The budget and programs for 2009 Korea-CERN Theory collabo- ration was approved by MEST. IV. Conclusion and Future Plan • Through CERN-Korea collaboration we promote the activities on par- ticle physics activity both in CERN and also in Korea. • The CERN-Korea theory collaboration is open to all theorists in Korea who are interested in this program. • Our main priority is to train young scientists, promoting actual collab- orations with CERN TH. • From the year 2010, we plan to run fully following programs, agreed between CERN TH and Korean Particle Theory community on August 15, 2008. 1. Send one Korean-CERN fellow every year and he or she will work for two years at CERN, fully supported by the program at the level of other CERN fellows from EC. 2. Send one graduate student to CERN for one year, fully supported by the program. 3. Send 3 postdocs a year to CERN TH institutes with a full support by the program. 4. On top of above activities, we plan to organize a workshop and promote collaborations at the level of professors so that the above programs run successfully.
