Bassist extraodinaire, composer, arranger, educator, curator and administrator, Christian McBride, has been one of the most important and most omnipresent figures in the jazz world for 20 years. Sometimes hard to believe considering this man is just 41 years of age. Beginning in 1989, this Philadelphia-born bassist moved to to further his classical studies at the Juilliard School, only to be snatched up by alto saxophonist, . Since then, McBride's list of accomplishments have been nothing short of staggering. As a sideman in the jazz world alone, he's worked with the best of the very best - Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Rollins, J.J. Johnson, Ray Brown, Milt Jackson, McCoy Tyner, , , and . In the R&B world, he's not only played with, but also arranged for Isaac Hayes, Chaka Khan, , Lalah Hathaway, and the one and only Godfather of Soul himself, James Brown. In the pop/rock world, he's extensively collaborated with Sting, Carly Simon, Don Henley, and Bruce Hornsby. In the hip-hop/neo-soul world, he's collaborated with the Roots, D'Angelo, and Queen Latifah. In many other specialty projects, he's worked closely with opera legend Kathleen Battle, bass virtuoso Edgar Meyer, the Shanghai Quartet and the Sonus Quartet. . Away from the bass, Christian has become quite an astute and respected spokesperson for the music. In 1997, he spoke on former President Bill Clinton's town hall meeting "Racism in the Performing Arts". He has served as Artistic Director of the Jazz Aspen Snowmass Summer Sessions; co-director of the National Jazz Museum in ; and 2nd Chair for Creative Chair for Jazz of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association. . Since 2000, McBride has blazed a trail as a bandleader with the Christian McBride Band. He has released two critically acclaimed CD's with that first group and in 2009 was signed to the Mack Avenue Records label where he recorded his quintet CD "Christian McBride & Inside Straight" . His second release on the label was "Conversations with Christian" a recording of duets with McBride and some of his best friends and mentors - , Angelique Kidjo, Dr. , Hank Jones, Chick Corea, Eddie Palmieri, Regina Carter, Ron Blake, Roy Hargrove, and Russell Malone. . In a stellar career that continues to showcase his remarkable talents as a consummate musician, bassist Christian reached another milestone with the 2011 release of The Good Feeling, his first big band recording. With “Out Here”, a 2014 release, Christian’s fifth recording on Mack Avenue Records, McBride introduced his latest working group: a trio, fully embracing at age 41 his role as standard-bearer and mentor. Pianist Christian Sands and drummer Ulysses Owens, Jr.—both younger, emerging artists—have been performing with McBride’s smallest group for about three years, honing their trio conception to a fine point of expressive depth and nuance with select performances around the world - we are very glad to be able to present this ensemble to Central Pa’s avid jazz audience. . 77 2014 - A Great Year for CPFJ!

The Central PA Friends of Jazz made great strides this year, stabilizing the organization, increasing our educational outreach, acquiring new funding sources, and maintaining our membership and concert attendance. With Steve Rudolph as our Executive Director, Sheila Ross as our office Manager, our loyal volunteers, and our active Board of Directors, we built coalitions with many other music presenters and took our concerts and Festival to many new venues. With the focus on live music, Tim Warfield and our Music Committee filled our annual Spring Concert Series with great performances by organist Joey DeFrancesco at the Sheraton in Harrisburg, vocalist Cecile McLorin Salvant at the Pollack Center in Camp Hill, and the duo of pianist Ehud Asherie and woodwind artist Ken Peplowski in the WITF Public Media Center. School bands from Camp Hill H.S. and Mechanicsburg H.S. performed as opening acts for the series. Our thanks to The Shearer Family Fund of TFEC and Scott Shearer for helping to underwrite these events. . For the second year, we took part in the Harrisburg Arts Festival at Riverfront Park over Memorial Day Weekend, supplying music eight hours a day for the three day event. Keith Mohler, Katie Rudolph, Ken Jankura, Beth Trez, Jason Mescia, Jonathan Ragonese, Nicole & Andy Roberts, the CPFJ Youth Band, Pat Murphy, Colin McKeel, No Last Call, Steve Meashey, Larry Marshall, Erin Cruise, Perky Scott, Joe Dennison, Bob Hart, The Central Dauphin Jazz Ensemble, Central Dauphin East Jazz Ensemble and more performed for the thousands of festival patrons on a beautiful weekend by the Susquehanna. The 2012 Central PA Jazz Camp was generously underwritten by the Olewine Family Fund and scholarships came from Penn National Insurance, Phoenix Design, The Hall Foundation, Capital Blue, and other private donors. With more than 70 students attending the three day event, CPFJ thanks Dr. William Stowman, Messiah College, our music faculty (including Wycliffe Gordon, Tim Warfield, Kirk Reese, Paul Bratcher, Jeff Stabley, Steve Meashey, Mitchell Stowman, and Jonathan Ragonese) and to all who contributed to the most successful Camp ever. In July we partnered with the Ware Center in Lancaster to host a fundraising concert for CPFJ Board Member, jazz bassist, and animal rights advocate, Keith Mohler who was recovering from surgery. Chris Bacas, Ron Waters, Robin Work, Steve Rudolph, Steve Varner, Larry Marshall, Steve Meashey, Ken Gehret, Bruce Campbell and many others performed. The sold out event celebrated Keith’s life and raised much needed funds for his financial needs. Sadly, Keith died on July 29th from complications from the surgery - he will be remembered and greatly missed.

This year’s Central PA Jazz Festival used many venues throughout Central PA from August 7th to 10th. The annual Riverboat Cruise with Dave Stahl and Tom Strohman on Thursday was a sellout as was the new Jazz Party at the 1500 North 6th St. Building. We utilized Crawdaddy’s Restaurant for a tribute to Sammy Banks, Café 1500 for a performance by Jonathan Ragonese & the roof of the building was the site for a swinging party with Diane Wilson Bedford, Ron Waters and the Jimmy Wood Trio. Ben Mauger’s Dixie Quintet welcomed guests to the evening’s festivities. Our annual Picnic was part of the Festival again this year and was held at a new venue, Indian Echo Caverns in Hummelstown. The venue was an excellent site for the music and we featured Tom & Greg Strohman’stgDivergence , Sonia V’s Quintet, Larry Marshall’s Quartet, the CPFJ Youth Band, and the always entertaining street band -No Last Call . We appreciate all the help from the Indian Echo staff and we plan to use this venue again next year. Sunday’s Festival events were held in Mt. Gretna, PA. The Timbers Restaurant opened on Sunday to host our Festival Jam Session lead by Jonathan Ragonese. Many patrons and musicians attended and following the jam they moved to Mt. Gretna Theater where we partnered with Gretna Music to co-host our Festival Concert. Philly bassist Lee Smith lead an all-star Sextet and harmonica artist Hendrik Meurkens brought his New York Samba Jazz Quartet. Our thanks to Bob Pugliese and Premier Wealth Management for their commitment to the Festival for the last two years!

The Fall Concert Series continued the success of the first of the year with three stellar monthly concerts from September through November. Thanks to funding by the Dauphin County Commissioners and with the help of the Dauphin Co. Parks and Rec. Dept., September’s concert was held the Friday night of the annual Dauphin County Jazz & Wine Festival at Ft. Hunter Park along the Susquehanna River. We featured vocalist Rene Marie and her Trio as well as Tim Warfield’sOrgan Band featuring Pat Bianchi in the big tent and the youth bandTemple Avenue on the small stage. Over 1100 fans attended the outdoor event and were thrilled by the artistry of the musicians. October’s concert brought NYC saxophonist Grant Stewart to the Allen Theatre in Annville. His quartet played a great concert of standards and jazz classics and we thank Skip Hicks and his staff at the Allen for making us feel right at home - the movie theater makes a really great venue for music. In November we partnered with Gretna Music again to present rising star vocalist Charenee Wade and her Trio in another great venue, Leffler Chapel at Elizabethtown College. This inspiring event closed our annual Series and we look forward to working with Gretna Music on future events.

On December 14th we hosted a concert and reception in honor of the 40th Anniversary of great area jazz group Third Stream. This well attended event, filled with memories and wonderful music, was a fitting tribute to this influential and inspiring band.

We hope that you will continue to support America's Music with your memberships, concert attendance, and contributions to the Central PA Friends of Jazz in 2015 and beyond. 8 Happy New Year to All! BERNARD STANLEY “ACKER” BILK: Jazz singer/clarinetist Acker Bilk was best known for writing and performing the 1961 clarinet recording 'Stranger on The Shore' which made him the first UK artist to top the US music charts in the 1960s. His most enduring hit was a lilting, gentle departure from the Dixieland-style jazz that was his stock in trade. He was 87. . JOHN BLAKE, JR: The Philadelphia jazz violinist/educator who toured with , Grover Washington Jr. and McCoy Tyner and taught generations of students at the Settlement Music School and University of the Arts. Blake, 67, died from complications of multiple myeloma. In the late 1970s, he backed saxophonist Washington, playing both keyboards and violin. In a 2011 profile in Strings magazine, violinist Christian Howes called Blake "the patriarch today of jazz violin." His students included Regina Carter, Jeremy Kittel of Turtle Island Quartet and Roots drummer Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson. John was a frequent visitor to Harrisburg, performing for CPFJ and in area venues. He received the “Jazz Legends” award from CPFJ in 2012. . : The gifted composer and pianist, a resident of the Denver area since the early 1980s, died in 2014 in Denver. He recorded and toured with many giants of jazz including Pharaoh Sanders, , Leon Thomas, , , Richie Cole, Carlos Garnett, Roy Brook, , and many others. . JACKIE CAIN: A vocalist who gave bebop a carefree vocalese spin in the late 1940s with her singer-pianist husband Roy Kral. She was 86. As Jackie and Roy, they became one of the most beloved jazz-pop singing duos and recording artists of the 1950s and beyond. The two went on to record nearly 40 albums for multiple record labels including Columbia and Verve. In the process, she altered the direction of club singing from bluesy to breezy. Born in Milwaukee in 1928, she applied emotional integrity and an earnest tone to sell difficult songs likeSpring Can Really Hang You Up the Most , turning them into standards. She appeared with Roy in the first Harrisburg Jazz Festival in 1979 at the Holiday Inn Town and for CPFJ in 1989. Roy died in 2004. . GEORGE JAMES “BUDDY” CATLETT: One of the most illustrious musicians to come up through Seattle’s Jackson Street jazz scene in the 1940s, Catlett was 81. Lifelong friend described Catlett as “one of the greatest bass players to ever take the stage.” Best known as a swinging, “in the pocket” bassist with a muscular, full-bodied sound, Mr. Catlett anchored the bands of Count Basie, Quincy Jones and Louis Armstrong for long stints, recording with them as well. . WILL CONNELL Jr.: Introduced to music by his father, Connell developed a love for jazz at an early age. As soon as Will was old enough, he began accompanying his father to Los Angeles jazz clubs and concert halls where most of the greatest jazz artists of the 1940s and 50s were performing. In 1975, Connell would ultimately leave Los Angeles for New York City, which would remain his home where he was one of the great exponents of free jazz. After beginning as a reed player and copyist for Chico Hamilton, Connell played saxophone with , Anthony Braxton, Pharaoh Sanders, Henry Threadgill and many others over the years. . BUDDY DEFRANCO: Renowned jazz clarinetist Buddy DeFranco, who led the way on his instrument in the transition between the swing and bebop eras, has died at the age of 91. DeFranco, who began his professional career as a teenager in the late 1930s, made both concert and recording appearances with many of the top singers and musicians of his era, including , , Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, Oscar Peterson and Art Tatum. "Buddy DeFranco almost single-handedly was the clarinetist who moved the harmonic and rhythmic language forward from where left off,” said leading jazz clarinetist Ken Peplowski. Buddy played several times for CPFJ, most recently in 1994. KENNY DREW, JR.: An impeccable jazz pianist who could play with dashing swing, breathtaking control and lush romanticism, died in 2014 at age 56. Drew had become one of the finest pianists of his generation, winning the Great American Jazz Piano competition in 1990 and recorded more than 20 albums as a leader during the course of his career. In addition he performed or recorded with Stanley Jordan, the Mingus Big Band, Sadao Watanabe, Stanley Turrentine, Slide Hampton, Jon Faddis, Smokey Robinson, Jimmy Heath and others. He performed for CPFJ twice in the ‘90’s. A complete pianist, he also played and recorded classical music and was a featured soloist all over the world. He was the son of hard bop pianist Kenny Drew. . FRANCIS “FRANKIE” DUNLOP: Drummer from Buffalo NY who played w/ , , , Sonny Rollins, , Lena Horne and more. He is most remembered for his stint with from ‘60-’64 and is the featured drummer on seven albums with him. . : Acclaimed as one of the most influential bassists in the history of jazz, Haden died in 2014. He was 76. For the last several years he had been struggling with the degenerative effects of post-polio syndrome, related to the polio he contracted in his youth. His jazz career crossed seven decades, with barely a moment of obscurity. He was in his early 20s in 1959, when, as a member of the Quartet, he helped set off a seismic disruption in jazz. Mr. Coleman, an alto saxophonist, had been developing a brazen, polytonal approach to improvisation -- it would come to be known as free jazz. Mr. Haden worked with many principal figures of an emerging jazz avant-garde. For a decade starting in 1967, he was a member of a celebrated quartet led by the pianist Keith Jarrett, with Dewey Redman on saxophone and Paul Motian on drums. Time Magazine has hailed jazz legend Charlie Haden as “one of the most restless, gifted, and intrepid players in all of jazz.” He performed for CPFJ with his Quartet West in 1986. . TIM HAUSER: The founder and singer of the Grammy-winning vocal troupeThe Transfer died in 2014 at age 72 of cardiac arrest. They went on to win multiple pop and jazz Grammy Awards. Their critically acclaimed album, 1985's “Vocalese," earned a whopping 12 Grammy nominations. Alan Paul, Janis Siegel and Cheryl Bentyne - who joined in 1978 and replaced Laurel Masse - rounded out the foursome. “Tim was the visionary behind The Manhattan Transfer," they said in a statement. It's incomprehensible to think of this world without him." . WAYNE HENDERSON: The trombonist and co-founding member of the popular jazz-funk band The Jazz Crusaders (later known as The Crusaders), died at age 74 in Culver City, California. Along with fellow Houston musicians (piano), (tenor saxophone) and Stix Hooper (drums), Henderson moved to Southern California and rebranded the group The Jazz Crusaders. Their sound owed much to hard bop, the dominant straight-ahead jazz style of the late '50s and early '60s, but the band didn't hide its time in Southern black churches, blues bands and R&B groups. That embrace of tuneful melodies and winning grooves, along with the unique tenor-sax/trombone frontline, made The Jazz Crusaders popular both in and out of the jazz community. The Jazz Crusaders became known for covers of The Beatles, Carole King and Sly and the Family Stone. The band dropped “jazz" from its name, started working with vocalists (including Henderson himself), and embraced electric keyboard, guitar and bass. . PAUL HORN: West Coast saxophonist, clarinetist and flutist Horn, who added edgy sophistication and nocturnal cool to chamber jazz ensembles in the 1950s and went on to pioneer World jazz in the '60s and beyond, died at age 84 after a brief illness. Horn joined the Chico Hamilton Quintet in 1956 and '57, appearing with the group in the movieSweet Smell of Success (1957). By 1959, Horn was an established studio musician, appearing on a wide range of sessions, including Paul Weston, Henry Mancini, Pete Rugolo, June Christy, Nancy Wilson, Nat King Cole and an album with . . KEITH MOHLER: Keith Charles Mohler, whose life was devoted to his twin passions of jazz and animal welfare, died at age 62 from complications of lung cancer. During the years immediately after college at Berklee School of Music, Keith toured nationally with the Glenn Miller Orchestra and other national bands. Keith came off the road and established himself as one of the leading jazz bassists in Central PA. Keith worked tirelessly to introduce jazz to area nightspots, establishing long running and highly popular series at places such as the East of Eden (now The Waterfront), the former P.J. Matthews Restaurant and the Eden Resort Inn. Most recently, he founded a jazz series at the Lancaster Marriott at Penn Square and the ongoing Jazz in the Sky series at the Ware Center. These events brought leading jazz musicians from New York City, Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and overseas to Lancaster to perform with rhythm sections anchored by Keith, a steady, responsive and creative player whose presence attracted both fellow musicians and fans. Keith also was a board member of CPFJ at the time of his death. 10 IDRIS MUHAMMAD: This native of New Orleans, whose drumming crossed over several musical styles including funk, jazz, and rhythm and blues, died at age 74. While he had spent the past two decades working with jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal, Muhammad's drumming covered almost every genre of contemporary music, including rock 'n' roll. He toured or recorded with a who's who of big names — Roberta Flack, Grover Washington, George Benson, Sonny Stitt and John Scofield, to name a few. Muhammad got his first national touring gig with Sam Cooke before moving on to Jerry Butler, Curtis Mayfield and beyond.

AL PORCINO: A powerful lead trumpeter for many big bands, died on New Years Eve in Munich, Germany. He was 88. Porcino had lived in Germany since the late 1970s, leading his own large ensemble. After debuting in 1943 with Louis Prima when he was 18, Porcino played with swing bands led by Tommy Dorsey, Georgie Auld and . He made the transition into the bebop era with ’s First Herd and went on to work with Stan Kenton and Chubby Jackson. He was frequently employed for the sound tracks of motion pictures and toured with singers including Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Mel Tormé and Judy Garland. He also recorded with and Count Basie. . AARON SACHS: Sachs was a gifted clarinetist and tenor saxophonist who never became as well known as many of his contemporaries despite yeoman work in bands led by Van Alexander, Red Norvo, Benny Goodman, , Benny Goodman, and Buddy Rich, among others. In the 1960s he became a stalwart in Latin jazz, playing for Machito, Tito Puente, and Tito Rodriguez. Sachs would have been 91 on the 4th of July. JOE SAMPLE: Influential keyboardist Joe Sample, who helped push the boundaries of jazz and funk as a member of the Jazz Crusaders, died in Houston at age 75. Sample's career with the Jazz Crusaders began as a hard bop group in Texas in the late '50s before the group migrated to the West Coast, releasing a string of hit albums that began in 1961 with “Freedom Sound." Teamed with saxophonist Wilton Felder, drummer Nesbert “Stix" Hooper and trombonist Wayne Henderson (who died this year), Sample helped lead the group toward mainstream success with a blend of jazz, funk and R&B, a sound that eventually led to the group dropping “jazz" from their name in 1971 and becoming the Crusaders. . JIMMY SCOTT: The jazzman with an ethereal man-child voice who found success late in life with the Grammy-nominated albumAll the Way died at age 88. His 1992 comeback albumAll the Way sold only 49,000 copies in the U.S. but earned him cult-like popularity in Europe and Asia, particularly Japan, where he often sold out performances. Eventually, he performed with the likes of Elton John, Lou Reed, Michael Stipe and Sting. He also appeared in the series finale of Twin Peaks, singing the songSycamore Trees , co-written by the show's creator David Lynch. "I love show business," Scott told the Associated Press in 2004. "It's my life and I try to enjoy it." In 2007, he received the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Award, the nation's highest jazz honor. He was a featured performer at the Central PA Jazz Festival in 1993. . : An influential pianist and composer, Horace Silver, who died at age 85, pioneered “hard bop" in the 1950s and 60s. A supreme craftsman, Silver was a member of and formed a succession of quintets whose music appealed to audiences beyond jazz. He was born in Norwalk, Connecticut and was mostly self-taught. As a leader, he was known for introducing great young players to the world stage. Mike and Randy Brecker, Joe Henderson, , Art Farmer, Woody Shaw, Tom Harrell, Louis Hayes and Billy Cobham were among the stars he introduced. His longest-lived ensemble, which lasted about five years in the late 1950s and early ’60s, featured and Junior Cook. Horace also played and recorded with jazz greats , , and . The classicsSong for My Father , Sister Sadie, Peace and The Preacher are a few of the hit compositions for this popular artist whose albums often sold over a million copies. He graced the CPFJ stage in 1998. . : Jazz pianist Frank Strazzeri was born in Rochester, NY and died at the age of 84. He went to Eastman School of Music, then took a job as a house pianist in a nightclub in Rochester in 1952. While there he accompanied musicians such as and Billie Holiday. He relocated to New Orleans in 1954, playing Dixieland with and , but his main focus since has been bebop. He was idolized early on by his contemporaries for his technical command of the trumpet and flugelhorn and for the musical and emotional content of his solos. His musical comrades included John Dankworth, Anthony Braxton, Dave Holland & Keith Jarrett. . JOE WILDER: Joe Wilder, admired for his trumpet tone, range, stylistic flexibility and for his elegance as a musician and person, died at the age of 92 in New York. Despite his modesty and disinclination to assert himself, his skill put him in demand by big band leaders including Lionel Hampton, Count Basie, and Benny Goodman, as well as a wide range of and television producers. Among the dozens of musicians with whom Wilder recorded were Coleman Hawkins, , Gil Evans, , Tadd Dameron, Carmen McRae and . . : The last surviving member of the Jimmie Lunceford Band, whose eight-decade career as a jazz composer, arranger, big-band leader and trumpeter spanned generations, styles and geography, Gerald Wilson died in Los Angeles. He was 96. Mr. Wilson was not yet 21 when he joined the Jimmie Lunceford Band in 1939 as a trumpeter, replacing Sy Oliver. 12 JOIN THE CENTRAL PA YOUTH JAZZ BAND

Ron Waters is leading rehearsals for theCPFJ Youth Band . There is no tuition fee and all applicants are accepted. Please contact Mr. Waters at (717) 432-3109 or via email [email protected] - all young musicians with an interest in learning to improvise are welcome. Our continuing dedication to jazz education led to the creation of the CPFJ Youth Band over 25 years ago. Mr. Waters is a professional arranger, composer and trumpet player and the band is open to all school age musicians - grade school through high school. Mr. Waters prepares arrangements to suit the particular talents of the participants each year. All applicants are accepted without audition - Mr. Waters finds a niche for every instrumentalist and vocalist. The band’s rehearsals and concerts are scheduled year round including performances at the Central PA Jazz Festival, Jazz Picnic, and many other events. Not only do the students get wonderful experience playing in an improvising ensemble, but they get to meet kids from other schools who have the same interest in jazz. This ensemble offers a different experience than most High School Jazz Ensembles - it is not a place where the students simply read the notes on the page - all members learn to improvise and get valuable experience playing jazz standards and original music in a group setting. The Youth Band is also not restricted to the traditional big band instrumentation (trumpets, trombones, saxes & rhythm section) - all instruments are welcome - we have had almost every imaginable instrument….cello, accordion, oboe, flute, etc. in past bands. The Youth Band plays all of our festivals and major events as well as many civic functions and concerts - come join the fun!!
