2008 COLLEGE FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE

On Dec. 9, LSU’s legendary halfback Billy Cannon, the winner of the 1959 Heisman Trophy, was inducted into the prestigious College Football Hall of Fame in the Grand Ballroom of the historic Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City. Cannon joined five other former LSU greats in the College Football Hall of Fame and was the first Tiger player to be inducted since Tommy Casanova in 1995. Cannon was inducted along with 12 other former college gridiron stars and two coaching legends. A sign honoring the All-American was unveiled in the southeast corner of Tiger Stadium after the first quarter of the Tigers’ game with Ole Miss on Nov. 22. The landmark represented Cannon being the only football player in school history to have his number retired. The recognition came on the same day members of LSU’s 1958 national championship team were honored, 50 years after claiming the school’s first national title.
