VOWME XXIII, NUMBER10 (X)WMillJSI OHIO DECEMBER..1982 DAMILANOFlNALLY CAP'IURES TOP SFOTJ STRAKHOVATEADS WOMEN, GAUDER CONTINUES REIGN Of1~n a brtnP.smain tn the Ohio Race Walker's annual World Rankings at 20 Km, Italy ' s Maurizio Damilano finally captured the top spot in 1987. Now JO-yea rs old , Damilano has been in our top six for the past seven years and ranked number two on three occasions--the past 2 years and 1980, when he won the Olympic gold medal. Joining Maruizio at the top were the Soviet Union's Irina Strakhova in the women's 10 Km and East Germany's Hartwig Gaud.er, who topped the 50 Kro rankings for the third straight year. The ORWst arted World Rankings for men at 20 and 50 Km in 1971 and added U.S. rankings at the same two distances J y~ars later . This marks the tenth year we have ranked the women at 10 km, both world and U.S. (The early omission of women was not a case of male chauvinism on our part--we have always covered women' s results--but lack of enough activity to justify rankings . The rankings are asubjective judgment on the JB,rt of your editor based on races throughout the year. Performance in major competitions and records in head- to-head competition among leading contenders are decisive factors . Fast times alone, without a good competitive record are usually not given much weight. The only award to the honored athletes is having their named eternally inscribed in the hallowed pages of the Ohio Racewalker for all the world to see. With taat introduction, here they are (Drumrolls and trumpets), the 1987 Ohio Racewalker Rankings!

They traded wins in the two races that brought the best in the world together. Krishtop had the faster time of the two and won t wo of thre e head -to - head , but her DQ leaves her with the poorer record in the majors and we give the nod to Strakhova ... Saxby is clearly third wit h the fastest time in the world and &iRh finishes in both worli races . T"-e Aussie was ranked number one J;;i.:.:t yc-:ir. l(riohl.op , onJy 10th la&t y~ar , was number one in 1984 and third in 1985. Strakhova has never been ranked before .. ,Jin and Nikolae · are ~uite even, each beating theother in one of the two big races . Howeve Jin had the higher finish of the two and gets the nod . (A complicating factor in the rankings is the late season 43:52 track performace by an unknown Chinese girl , Yaibling Chen. We have no other de.tail on the race . If she beat Jin or Yan, she may be deser vi ng of ranking) . .. Yan, after disqualificat i on in the World Cup race , had an excellent performance in Rome to take the sixth spot. Diaz also improved markedly in the second of the two big ones to take seventh . • •The very consistent Peel is a clear eighth . . . Serbinenko di dn ' t get to wal k the World Championship , but takes ninth off her close fin i sh behind .Peel in the Cup . , • Sobrino edges t wo Swedes, Ann Jansson and Monica Gunarsson for the final spot . Jansson was ninth and 11th in the two World races , Gunarsson 18th and an excellent sixth. Thus the deciSive race was in Saluzzo , Italy in June , where Sobrin1 beat them both . 1987 WORLD10 KMLIST--WOMEN 42 :52 Kerry Saxby , Australia 45 :51 Sujie Li , China l~J:32 Olga Kirshtop , USSR 45 :59 S .
