ALTERED STATES OF PERFORMANCE: SCORDATURA IN THE CLASSICAL GUITAR REPERTOIRE by COREY JAMES FLOWERS (Under the Direction of Michael Heald) ABSTRACT Scordatura is commonplace in the guitar repertoire, though there are relatively few resources available that explain the approach to its use, either from a performer’s or a composer’s perspective. Through examination of specific selections in the classical guitar repertoire, this document offers an introduction to various alternate tunings for the guitar, beginning with tunings used to transcribe lute and vihuela music, and progressing to modern experimentations found in the literature. Each piece on the accompanying recording provides insight into the use of these alternate tunings by highlighting specific musical characteristics that are made possible, or are idiomatic, in each tuning, such as extended ranges, open string relationships, unique chord voicings, and the ease of introducing contrasting tonal centers across a program. The CD provides a basis for aural comparison of the tunings and is a resource for performers interested in this repertoire. It also provides examples for composers and arrangers wishing to approach writing for the guitar using non-standard tunings. As additional resources, a glossary of terminology is provided, concerning tunings found in the document, as well as tunings used outside of the classical repertoire that may be useful for experimentation. In fact, most of these techniques were arguably developed for this kind of repertoire. Generally the original solo repertoire is idiomatic for the double bass. The same cannot be said for the orchestral repertoire, which presents many technical problems too difficult to solve using the traditional technique. -

MEPlus–Suzuki Strings FAQ 1. What is the Royal Conservatory Music Enrichment Program? The Royal Conservatory Music Enrichment Program is a unique and innovative music education experience specifically designed to develop superior musical skills in school-aged students (ages 4 – 17+). The Music Enrichment Program (MEP) fosters students’ musical development through a comprehensive and effectively sequenced program of music study and assessment. It focuses on developing the whole musician through four key elements: Individual Instruction, Theory/Musicianship Classes, Assessment & Enrichment, and Electives (only available in the MEPlus program) to inspire creativity and musical exploration. The Music Enrichment Program welcomes students practicing all instruments and voice. 2. What is the Royal Conservatory Music Enrichment Plus–Suzuki Strings Program? MEPlus–Suzuki Strings is an option within the Music Enrichment Program for students wishing to study according to the Suzuki Method. The Suzuki Method is a specific approach to teaching instruments to young children, developed by Dr. Shinichi Suzuki of Japan. All MEPlus—Suzuki Strings instructors are highly trained in and dedicated to the Suzuki philosophy, and include some of Canada’s top Suzuki teacher trainers. 3. What is involved in the Suzuki approach? Parent Participation: The parent must attend lessons, make written notes, and work as a home teacher with the child on a daily basis. Constant interest, a calm and pleasant attitude, and praise for real effort lead to musical development. A musical background is not required. Parent training sessions led by Suzuki instructors are available at various times throughout the year and designed to help parents with home practices and other related issues. -

NAXOS NAXOS Giovanni Bottesini enjoyed a globe-trotting career as “the Paganini of the double bass” but was also an accomplished and respected conductor in Europe. When conducting operas Bottesini would often perform fantasies on the evening’s entertainment during the intermission. Two such fantasies, ‘Lucia di Lammermoor’ and ‘Beatrice di Tenda’, are virtuosic tours de force in which the complex double bass figurations mimic the coloratura vocal writing of the day. The String Family
The String Family When you look at a string instrument, the first thing you'll probably notice is that it's made of wood, so why is it called a string instrument? The bodies of the string instruments, which are hollow inside to allow sound to vibrate within them, are made of different kinds of wood, but the part of the instrument that makes the sound is the strings, which are made of nylon, steel or sometimes gut. The strings are played most often by drawing a bow across them. The handle of the bow is made of wood and the strings of the bow are actually horsehair from horses' tails! Sometimes the musicians will use their fingers to pluck the strings, and occasionally they will turn the bow upside down and play the strings with the wooden handle. The strings are the largest family of instruments in the orchestra and they come in four sizes: the violin, which is the smallest, viola, cello, and the biggest, the double bass, sometimes called the contrabass. (Bass is pronounced "base," as in "baseball.") The smaller instruments, the violin and viola, make higher-pitched sounds, while the larger cello and double bass produce low rich sounds. They are all similarly shaped, with curvy wooden bodies and wooden necks. The strings stretch over the body and neck and attach to small decorative heads, where they are tuned with small tuning pegs. The violin is the smallest instrument of the string family, and makes the highest sounds. There are more violins in the orchestra than any other instrument they are divided into two groups: first and second.
