The 2013 Celebration of Giving

Thursday, November 14, 2013

5:30 p.m. social and 6 p.m. program

Regents’ Great Hall in the UAF Fine Arts Complex

University of Fairbanks Dear Friends,

Sherry and I are pleased to celebrate and honor the many University of Alaska Fairbanks supporters that make this institution so wonderful. With your support and commitment to UAF, our students succeed in so many ways and are able to make an impact around the world.

Our job at UAF is to help students discover they can earn more than just a paycheck in the real world. We teach students how to ask questions and then inspire them to seek out the answers. Your support ensures our students continue to have access to superior programs and resources, and helps expose them to a world beyond themselves.

We hope you enjoy this evening of fine wine, music and, most importantly, great company. We sincerely thank you for your generous contributions and the impact you continue to make on our students and programs.

Sincerely,

Brian Rogers Chancellor Welcome to the University of Alaska Fairbanks 2013 Celebration of Giving

GIVING COMES FULL CIRCLE Brian Rogers, Chancellor

2013 HONOREES We are pleased to recognize the following donors:

Linda G. Hulbert, Individual Pollock Conservation Cooperative, Corporate Liz Claiborne & Art Ortenberg Foundation, Foundation Paul and Birgit Hunter, Longevity

“It is my goal to make my family and community proud of me by becoming the first person in my family to earn a college degree.”

— Carlene Liskey, Recipient of the Alaska Native Medical Center Auxiliary Scholarship, Jessie O’Bryan McIntosh Scholarship and Willard “Buck” Whitaker Memorial Scholarship 2013 Honorees

individual Linda Hulbert Linda Hulbert and the Hulbert family are long-time supporters and advocates of UAF students, programs and mission. As a representative of New York Life, Linda Hulbert helped secure UAF’s first $1-million-dollar contribution from NYL, and has been instrumental in the corporation’s continued philanthropic support of two important college prep programs at UAF: the Rural Alaska Honors Institute and the Alaska Summer Research Academy. Additionally, in 2012, she personally made a gift to establish the John R. Hulbert Memorial Scholarship, in honor of her late husband. The scholarship supports nontraditional students at the UAF Community and Technical College who have returned to higher education after a lengthy absence. Most recently, Linda and her family established a six-year pledge totaling $180,000 in support of the UAF Nanook Terrain Park. This generous commitment will allow for further development of the park and provide critical operating funds. In recognition of Linda and her family’s significant financial contributions to, and passionate advocacy on behalf of, our students, faculty and staff, the UAF Nanook Terrain Park was renamed the Hulbert Nanook Terrain Park in summer 2013. In addition to her private, philanthropic giving to UAF, Linda Hulbert encourages others to support UAF through direct giving, inspirational partnerships and public advocacy. Linda Hulbert’s late husband came to the UAF to teach in 1968, her daughter is an alumna, her son-in-law is a two-time alumnus working at UAF, and her son, Erik, attended UAF while in high school. As Linda notes, “UAF is important to our family.”

longevity Paul and Birgit Hunter In 1964, Paul and Birgit Hunter made their first gift to the University of Alaska Fairbanks; nearly every year since, they have renewed or increased their annual gift. In 1981, inspired by the opportunity scholarships afforded Paul, the couple established the Paul C. Hunter Engineering Scholarship in support of engineering students at UAF. Over the last 39 years, Paul and Birgit have donated more than $54,000 to UAF. In addition, Paul and Birgit utilize the Boeing Company’s employee matching-gift program, providing a significant boost to their personal philanthropic support and allowing more students to receive financial support. Paul earned a B.S. in electrical engineering and a B.S. in mathematics from UAF in 1962. After graduating he served in the U.S. Army for more than 28 years in air defense artillery, field artillery and research and development. After leaving the Army, Paul went to work for the Boeing Company as a systems engineer in the Defense and Space Group. Birgit also went to work for the Boeing Company as a translator and later an events coordinator. After 17 years, Paul retired from Boeing in 1995 and Birgit in 1999. Paul and Birgit reside in the Seattle area and enjoy volunteering for the USO, supporting active military service men and women. corporate Pollock Conservation Cooperative The Pollock Conservation Cooperative was formed in 1998 by the Bering Sea pollock catcher-processor fleet to promote the orderly harvest of pollock; reduce waste and improve resource utilization in the fisheries. In 2000, the PCC helped form the Pollock Conservation Cooperative Research Center at SFOS. Five companies- American Seafoods, Arctic Storm, Glacier Fish Co., Starbound and Trident Seafoods- have given more than $13 million to the PCCRC to further research, and to establish an endowed Chair in Marine Policy, the Ted Stevens Professor of Marine Policy. Through the UAF School of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences, the Pollock Conservation Cooperative Research Center provides grants to faculty and graduate students for research on a wide variety of groundfish species including pollock in the Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska. Marine mammals, climate effects and product development are also of interest to the center. Additionally, the PCCRC supports graduate students through direct fellowships. The PCC companies take pride in helping educate the “home-grown” leaders of tomorrow while supporting research that increases the knowledge about the North Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea. foundation Liz Claiborne and Art Ortenberg Foundation With a pledge of a quarter-million dollars over 10 years, in 2007, the Liz Claiborne and Art Ortenberg Foundation established the George Schaller Fellowship, in honor of UAF alumnus and world-renowned field biologist George Schaller. Schaller earned both a bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degree at the University of Alaska in 1955. The fellowship allows international graduate students in the Resilience and Adaptation Program to conduct conservation research that contributes to the survival of wildlife and the vitality of human communities with which their fate is linked. RAP is an interdisciplinary training and education program that prepares scholars, policymakers, community leaders and managers to address issues of sustainability in an integrated fashion. Through coursework, an internship experience, thesis research and other training, students in PhD and master’s programs address a major challenge facing humanity: sustaining the desirable features of Earth’s socio-ecological systems at a time of rapid change. The Liz Claiborne and Art Ortenberg Foundation is a private body devoted to the conservation of nature and the amelioration of human distress. The foundation seeks to redress the breakdown in the processes linking nature and humanity. Its focus is to help devise solutions that directly benefit local communities and serve as exemplars for saving species and wildlands. It recognizes the imperative to reconcile nature preservation with human needs and aspirations. Legacy Society Legacy Society members have generously remembered UAF in their wills or estate plans.
